What the hell is going on in Turkey?
Last I checked they were a democracy and they had an elected leader. Turkey has been doing so well recently and with bordering Greece having economical issues Turkey's economy has been improving and as far as I know they are doing very well. So why protest?

Looks like since their soccer season ended they gotta find a way to release all that negative energy.

Typical protest subject gone wild....the elected Govt planned to build a commercial area for commerce and the nut jobs rioted and set up barricades to keep the builders out. Grew into the usual crap from there....clashes with police and authority in general.

    Crazy world crazy world.

First of all, unlike arab countries, Turkey is not a muslim country. It's a secular country. Yes, majority of people (%75-80) are muslims but it's a secular country.

Let's get to reason of protests,

AKP Government wants to destroy Gezi Park.

Taksim Gezi Park is an urban park in Taksim Square, in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district. It is one of the smallest parks of Istanbul. In May 2013, plans to replace the park with a reconstruction of the former Taksim Military Barracks (demolished 1940) intended to house a shopping mall sparked the 2013 Taksim Gezi Park protests in Turkey.

You know Central Park in NY. Can you imagine you're demolishing a part of Central Park and build a big shopping center (AVM) there?

There's a big support to Turkey from many countries around the world. With the big power of social media such as Twitter, Youtube and Facebook, The Resistance gets wide and wide..

you are right about the secular.

from what I've read on several reliable websites the protests have nothing to do with the Park. The people are using the park as an excuse to protest against Erdogan, who received nearly 50% of the votes last election. They are aware that Erdogan's party will probably win the next election as well and the only way to get him and his party out is to protest and get him to resign. Of course this will affect the country in a negative way and if Erdogan was to resign like people want than the 50% who voted for him would then get on the streets and they would have larger amount of protestors and the country would go even in deeper turmoil. With all this in mind its a can't win situation for Turkey and these protests will be hurting them badly.

hi guys, I'm from Turkey. The biggest problem is Turks knows that the goevernment steal lots of money from people. how do you call? ''favoritism'' !! If goevernment need something, (bridge, a kind of facility or enything) it changes the tender specification and some of people (who are relatives of the goevernment members) win the contract. it happend houndreds of times in last 11 years. Also there are a few important exams, matriculation for university (every single year 1,7 million people joins) and a few exams for goevernment officer candidates. Most people belives that chicane causes in exams. But so hard to proove. By the way Erdogan has a strong Media power and the media obscures what happens in Turkey doesn't look after about real problems (like US media) nobody criticizes Erdogan, if any of journalist does, he or she fired. and just a few small tv channel, website and newspaper tells about truth. %95 of media mute. finally %50 of Turks go crazy. other side still belive Erdogan's lies because the suppose that he is a good and decent person. like I said he can manage the media

Don't pay any attention to Rifleman. Other than being a troll, he thinks there are only two types of the people in the world: Whites and non-whites. He can't grasp other cultures; and he won't take the time to actually educate himself, because he is too busy copying/pasting from websites that fit into his own ideology.

Turkey is a great country. The people are wonderful and the history is fascinating. I have been there twice.
