Spying on Americans gets more intense’
The institutionalized spying on the American people by the U.S. government is getting “more intense as we go forward”, says Stephen Lendman, American writer, radio host and columnist at Veterans Today.
Ever since the 9/11 attacks, American citizens have been subjected to intensified spying, warrantless wiretapping, and search and seizure without a warrant.
According to statistics released by Google, U.S. government agencies-state, local, and federal-made a record 13,753 requests to read emails or gather other information sent through the company’s Gmail and other services in 2012. Over half of the requests have been without warrants.
Moreover, earlier this year in March, Microsoft announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is secretly spying on its customers with so-called National Security Letters that do not require a judge’s approval.
“Literally, anyone in America can be spied on. They can access our personal records with regard to finance, medical, [and] education,” said Lendman in a phone interview with the U.S. Desk on Wednesday.
“The FBI is very much involved in this, the CIA also, but the FBI wants additional powers beyond what they already have,” he added.
Concerns are being raised in the U.S. that the Americans’ right to privacy in at greater risk now that U.S. officials can intensify their spying on them in the name of ‘national security’ in the wake of the Boston bombings.
“If this isn’t a police state, I don’t know what is. It’s a very, very dangerous situation and I fear that Obama will go along with whatever the FBI wants,” said Lendman.
