I only paid 3k for my now wife's engagement ring 8 years ago. I had a custom ring done with an emerald(my birthstone) on each side of the diamond. I think her knowing that the ring was custom and one of a kid made it more important than it being of high cost. Rings are ridiculously overpriced in the first place.

Same here. I spent about 3k on a custom sapphire birthstone with 1 diamond on each side. She has gotten more random compliments on that than women walking around with traditional rings 4 times as expensive.
