I slipped and fell twice this year on the ice. Bike trails all have a foot thick covering of ice.

I run on side of road but cars get to close and I get scared.

its subjective when you say REAL. Ya there are places I wouldn't want to live but I can say that about Canada and the States as well.

true, but what i posted is the majority of costa rica. costa rica has a small concentration of nice areas, and the rest look just average, with bars on windows and razor wire everywhere. our beaches are nice, very much so, with an increased crime rate so that anybody would be batshit crazy otu of their mind to go visit the caribbean at this point in time.

what the tourists see is the best of costa rica. the costa rica that us residents see - it's a concrete jungle shithole. there's no way to sweeten it up - it is what it is.

sure, the first 3 pics, i deliberately showed the poor pictures in costa rica, but what about the last 3? the 4th picture is a picture of a gas station in downtown belen. belen is a fairly nice, middle-class area of heredia.

the 5th picture is the train station in downtown heredia. this is normal everyday life for costa ricans.

the 6th picture is a middle class neighborhood in san jose. again, completely normal life.

the first 3 pics i posted showed the poverty here. and the poverty is very much huge, with the avg tico making, what, $500 USD a month? the last 3 pics showed how the rest of costa rica lives - the middle class. there is such a tiny percentage of people that live here that are upper middle class, so i don't even bother to include those, because that's not the "real" costa rica.

I blame the first guy who put up bars and barbwire. Everyone just followed!

I don't know how much you have traveled around the world Chili but I wouldn't wanna leave my car in places in the US any more than I would here in CR in certain places. Let alone walk at night in some neighborhoods. It is difficult to make a true comparison IMO.

I am sure living in the Maldives also has negative aspects to it. Same with Thailand and almost every place on Earth. I will judge it when I go there for myself.

Overall, Costa Rica is great. Best climate in the world maybe.

they are called Pizote in Spanish and in English, White-nosed coati. I am pretty sure Chilidog has a few as pets.

For the most part, true. But on the Caribbean coast lately, they've also been a target of rape and murder. As a 9-year resident of Costa Rica, I would stay far away from the caribbean side of Costa Rica for the present.

The Supreme Court here just ruled that no more prisoners here can go to jail, because we have no more room for them! The jail was that overcrowded, and Costa Rica does care about civil rights for its' citizens.

Couldn't have said it better, Em. The Costa Rica that tourists see is beautiful. It's just gorgeous; breath-taking. But the real Costa Rica, LOL. It's a damn concrete-jungle. It's not eco-friendly. All of our piss and sh.it flows right into the oceans. Drugs and crime are rampant, and the cops can't do anything about it.
