I'm from Chi so I'll comment here. Close to half of the city has been almost like a warzone for decades now. Some of the folks there are no better than animals and will get reckless in defense of their block or their gang / set. On the flip side, folks in the north side and downtown areas stay relatively oblivious to all of this since this half of the city has gentrified significantly in the past 15 years or so. In the summertime the warzone areas (mostly south & west of the city) get even worse, while the north side and downtown become almost like a more caucasian Miami of the north with all the lakeshore beaches, nightlife, clubs. Plenty of babes that are white (American), European (esp. Eastern Europeans), Latinas (Mexican followed by Puerto Rican), Asians, Indians, and grown & sexy Blacks that don't cause a ruckus. This is all in spite of the historic segregation in the city. Clubbing downtown in the summer especially feels like you're in a thriving, mini pocket of Manhattan. It's really a tale of two cities in Chi-Town.

The press tends to focus on all the negative that occurs in Chicago, but the reality is that Chicago overall has a side to it that continues to thrive unlike our rustbelt counterparts like Detroit & Cleveland. I will admit that Chicago has other negatives besides high crime such as political corruption & high taxes. Despite all this, yuppies from the Midwest continue to flock to the city (esp. the north side and areas by downtown) for its career opportunities & city lifestyle that is tougher to find in say Michigan or Ohio.
