I recently started playing and can't stop. What a fascinating game.

My favorite would be Queens Gambit followed by Sicilian defense.

I was a pretty good player on my teenage years. Had I put more effort, IM title would be a real chance. I was a good strategist and technician, but my attacking skills were lacking. At some point I burned out. I was trying to exchange pieces every time to go to endgames, where my superior technique would give me the edge. It resulted in a lot of draws, many routine wins and a few "unlucky tactics" losses. I was not enjoying tournament games anymore, and with the shorter time controls my skills were not as useful. So, I called it quits. After that I started a career as chess arbiter and tournament organizer, and I have been blessed with a fruitful career.
Chess playing gave me a lot of benefits. It forces you to analyze many options, synthesize the findings into a move, and look for any possible rebuttals. That mindset has guided me to make many good choices on my life. So, keep playing chess while you enjoy it... the benefits will extend throughout your life.

Ive dabbled in it. way too hard to become a decent player.
and i have gotten lucky winning against higher ranking opponents during blitz (2:00) games.
used to play at ICC a few years ago and i spent most of my time following grand masters than playing myself.

Can anyone recommend a good program to download? I tend to get distracted playing opponents online and can be baited into bad moves by slow players.

I like the game, but I'm as good at it as the next guy. I love chess studies, I think football strategists could use them. I sometimes see scenarios in football (all types) where certain chess studies can be applied, especially this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9ti_endgame_study

I know one move, Fool's Mate. If that doesn't work, I'm sunk.
