An Ashley High student was jailed Thursday for spreading a rumor that a gunman was going to “shoot up” the high school Friday, an official said. Dylan Merten
Dylan Greg Merten, 17, is charged with disorderly conduct by disturbing students.
According to the arrest warrant, Merten created “the idea and rumor that on 12/21/12 a subject would enter the premises of Ashley High School and ‘shoot up the school.’”
As a result, the warrant claims, “this statement caused many students to fear for their safety at Ashley High School and in turn plan not to attend classes on 12/21/2012.”
Merten was booked into the New Hanover County jail Thursday morning and released on an unsecure $1,000 bond, said Sgt. Jerry Brewer.
Rick Holliday, assistant superintendent of New Hanover County Schools, said the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Ashley High School adminstrators began an investigation Monday after staff began hearing the rumors.
“(Wednesday) the source of the threat was identified as a current Ashley student who apparently started the rumors as a hoax,” Holliday said.
He said the Ashley administration has applied “appropriate disciplinary measures” in regards to the student.
“The New Hanover County Schools takes all threats against students and staff very seriously. We will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the learning environment of any of our schools,” he said. “We would ask that community members contact the New Hanover County Schools to verify accurate information before responding to rumors.”
