Can anyone recommend a good brand in the 500-600 dollar or less range?

Go get an old refrigerator and buy a conversion kit. Then you have a place to store the ice for the mixed drinks. Just another $$$$ saving tip

This is true...Put the fridge in a closet and run it through the wall if you're having it in a bar.
In the garage just use the fridge.
But if you have small house and just plan on keeping it in closet or something kegerator is the best way to go.

I have one, full keg in my game room right next to my kitchen and living room. I can honestly tell you it's great and I love it!!! But, you will drink more beer than you use to because of 2 things, 1 it's more convenient and 2 you don't want it to go bad. JMO

I don't really drink anymore but we had one in college. We bought a converted full-size fridge kegerator off Craigslist for maybe $100. Great investment for living that college life and good conversation piece. Probably one of the reasons why the party always moved to our house lol
You basically have unlimited beer with this setup. We had a rotation system with the keg. Between my two roommates and I, we would just take turns buying the keg when it went dry. Around $50 every three weeks unless we had a major party but then we would just charge for cups and refill that way.
