I've sort of given up on Team USA. I think even if you got the 10 best online poker players in the world and put them in this situation, they wouldn't even win 30% of the time. Huge mountain to climb. Reminds me of last year, when the team got buried early and made a late push but still couldn't crawl out of last (it came down to the final tournament, as I recall. We almost had third).

USA GM cleaned house after last year's performance, only to see it happening again.

It is honestly debatable whether the US players are even better than their counterparts - and again debatable whether these guys are better in the short handed format. They have been winning MTTs which are full tables for the most part, but your point about high variance is valid... it was way too much of a value spot for me to pass up laying the US in this spot.

Obviously measuring by tournaments isn't the best way but I'd say generally the better players at tournaments will be among the better players even at 4-handed poker.

Unless you have any better way of objectively assessing this, I still think USA has the strongest team.

Opti, I was at Rudy's tournament yesterday and he was joking about how he was drinking so much he was seeing double. 4 guys at the table, he's saying there are 8 guys left, etc.

Maybe he drank so much he can't remember the conversation.
