    Online Ring game Expectations.
I have been playing poker for years. I usually do pretty well. I recently lost my job so I have been playing a ton of poker and of course betting sports. I usually play .50/1 No limit Holdem. Wondering with these blinds how much should you really expect to make in a session. Is there a rule of thumb or anything like that. Just curious how much I should be expecting to profit from a decent session.

If you don't know how to answer the question yourself you won't profit so go look for a regular job.

It's measured in bb or BB/100. That's big blinds or big bets/100 hands. If you run a hand history database it'll keep track of your earn rate.

Calculating expectation is straight forward. Here is the rub. You get a certain number in mind. The sessions when you make the number you receive little satisfaction because that is what you are supposed to do. The sessions in which you downturn hurt even more than normal. You start to chase to hit that number each day and session. Expectation lowers your play and ability to make money in general.

it depends on how long and how many tables.. one option is to treat it like a job - If you need to make $40 an hour for 8 hours to replace your current job, then shoot for that..

if u playing poker because u lost ur job. then its a bad start. go find a job. and play poker on the side. that is my suggestion. u can't expect to win certain amount/ hr cause bad run can occur anytime

If you are playing 50/1 then you must be very good and already a proven winner. I usually try to leave with double my buy in and play 3 tables at a time, scoring on two of them and being even on the other. Buyin for your level is at least $50 so win expectation per session of 3 tables is +$100. My sessions last about a hour and will play a few per day. If you are at this level then you should be winning about $300 per day. 50/1.00 is a high level and I doubt that you belong there. Do you have a proven steady record of cashing out? If you do and want to make a living from poker and willing to relocate then you might like to join forces. Contact me for more info if so.

My only advice is to be ridiculously overrolled for your level. For example at .50/1 many pro's have 100+ buyins for that level. That makes it a 10k roll to play .50/1. This is the only way to overcome variance, the ups and downs. Many pros experience a 20 or more buyin loss throughout their career, it is just the nature of the game.

You can't play enough hands in a session to have a true expectation. You need thousands of hands to get rid of variance. Think of all your sessions as one big long session, play 20K hands and you'll get a good idea of what your expectation is and how good you are beating the game for.

A better way to overcome variance is to have a high earn rate. You can play on a much shorter bankroll with equal risk of ruin then. Additionally, be willing to move up and down in stakes.
