Betting With Your Brain Instead Of Your Heart On Games Involving The Team You Support
I am a huge Liverpool FC fan (I know, I know - let the jokes begin!) and as a rule, I usually dont even look at the odds on games involving them as years ago when I did bet on games with them, they seemed to lose - which made me doubley unhappy to see them lose and also lose some money. On the other side, I can never bring myself to bet on them as it feels wrong cheering against my team just for money.

However, I have just broken that rule on the Hearts vs Liverpool, Europa League game tomorrow.

I have been watching the odds get bigger and bigger all week, and trying to talk myself out of getting involved all week, but ultimately trying to look at it from a purely neutral point of view, in my mind the price on Hearts to beat Liverpool looks far too high for me (+735 @ Pinny), and I have had to have a bet on them, with my logic as follows.

Primarily, this game is just 3 days before we play Man City in the EPL so for a start I cant see us fielding a full team and those that do play will likely be thinking ahead to that game, in fact I just saw a report that suggests that Gerrard, Suarez, Skrtel + Johnson will not even travel to Scotland to play while Enrique is still injured.

If this article is true, this means that we will be without 3 of our starting defenders, with only Agger from our best back 4 will play, though arguably Kelly could also be considered very close to our starting defence. We will also be without our Captain and also our most creative forward player in Suarez, even if he misses far more shots than he scores.

There is an argument to suggest that after such a poor start, the reserve players who will get to play this game will be looking to prove the manager that they deserve a place in the team, but even adding all this up I still cant see how Hearts should be any bigger than +400 at best to win this game, instead of +735. In fact you can even get +500 on Hearts for the "Draw No Bet" option with a couple of books, meaning if the game is tied after 90mins you get your money back.

All this aside, I have been wondering whether its not such a bad thing to bet on games involving your own team - in theory you should have a lot more knowledge on them, which can only help - but at the same time does anyone else find it difficult to look at games from a neurtal point of view, or do you find that you get blinded by your support for your team and find yourselves betting on them much more than you really should do ?

The one thing I will say is that it is a slippery slope and try not to bet games involving your team. I used to be a dedicated fan of Manly in the NRL. The more I have bet games involving them - the less I have cared about the team. Back in 2001 I wouldn't miss a game, these days i'd probably watch them half the time they are on TV if that.

I'm a huge Chelsea fan and when I cap the game, I really do it with no bias at all and would only bet on them if I really thought there was value. My track record betting them is no better or worse than betting on any other team so bias isn't really a problem as far as I'm concerned. However I would never, EVER bet against them. I even find it hard to bet unders or overs on their games as I tell myself how am I supposed to cheer for an under if we concede after 3 minutes? How am I to cheer for an over if we're drawing 1-1 away to Barcelona and clinging on for our lives? I go to all the games so that just makes it even worse. Cheering against one's team at home is bad enough, but if you go to games it's almost unthinkable.

Exception: Last day of the season, we're playing for nothing and if we lose West Ham or QPR go down, or Tottenham/Arsenal miss the CL

Anyone who bets real money with their heart is a sap. I'm a padres fan and I have bet against them every single game this season. Not kidding. Every single game, and I'm up.

This is simple - if you are betting where one team you love and follow is playing, and you are doing it based on homerism emotion, you are wasting amazing potential.

For instance, big Arizona Wildcat fan, I know that team inside and out. I know how much the starting center for this years team gained in muscle since arriving on campus for summer session one. I know their strengths and weaknesses and everything else - I follow them religiously. If you are letting your homerism get in the way of this type of angle - you are fukking up big bucks.

Some of my biggest bets were fading these guys last year. Loved it - they lost or didn't cover some retarded spread, but instead of sulking I made some coin off that crap. Same thing goes with tailing them. They win and you win - best shit in the world, especially when it involves march madness and going to the booth to collect the winnings right then and there.

One of my best betting moments ever was when Arizona played Kansas in Vegas, they lost - but were underdogs and covered well. As the Kansas fans were all talking shit, I was reminding these assholes that "good teams win and great teams cover" as I headed to the cashier at the sports book.

You know more than the bookies in every instance like that. It is what I wish more guys in players talk would post about - real local information.

If you like Jets as a fan you bet the other side so its a win win no matter of that the outcome is

I will bet against one of my favorite teams in certain instances. It seems like when I do, I lose more often than cashing. Going to try and avoid this scenerio upcoming football season.

I'm a Texas Rangers fan, and I've bet ON THEM for every single game this year. So far, I'm 21 games over .500.

betting as a fan is actually the only real way to make a major score. At least when you only bet sporadically. Not many people handicap 20-1 or 30-1 shots. So to get those type of pay outs you need to be a fan or really lucky.

Well played, Duff. I wondered how long it would take for someone to figure that out.

The answer is yes, but very little. Literally like $8. Those -185 losses really sting.

If people can keep their bias out of it, betting on their own teams games makes the most sense since thats a team they know in and out. Of course most r unable to keep bias out of it.

I bet for and against "my team" on several occasions.

Sometimes you get burned, but oh well.
