Is there a thead somewhere that explains this? I tried to join a table and it said I couldn't join my rating was too high.
What kinda BS is this? Lou? SBR John? Anybody???

It's a new rating system they said they were rolling out at the beginning of the week. Its aim is to allow so called "new players" a table of their own (Sanctuary) so they have less opportunities to lose to other players by restricting the player pool. Go into the poker software and click on tools then show statistics for a better understanding how it's calculated.
I'm on the cusp of achieving the 1450 can't wait till i fly right under it.
Not that anyone asked my opinion, but I think this SUCKS !!!!
IMHO, this is pretty much the SBR equivalent of everybody on the Little League baseball team getting a trophy.
"You suck at baseball. But we don't want to damage you little psyche, so here's a trophy." = "You suck at poker. But we don't want to hurt you little psyche, so here's a table for people just like you!"
And people want to know why this country is going to hell in a handbasket...

No, BD...exactly the opposite, at least from me.
I know I suck. I try to avoid tables with a lot of good players like you. I've got notes on a bunch of guys. I know who can play and who can't. I try and find the tables who have people who arent good. Improves my chances!

Was not a shot a you Doc, I think you are a solid player and a nice guy to have at the table.
My point was that there will be a number people trying to measure themselves and challenging others with their "big numbers".
For the record, I do not think this is a good idea. SBR does not have a big enough player pool to try and segregate the supposive good players from the supposive bad players.
Also, the small number of hands against varying players and situations does not lend itself to a valid and accurate measure of poker skill/ability.
From what I have gathered, I think it is based on total amounts won at SBR poker, ring and tourney.... Not sure if that is accurate but if it is, it is a really skewed measure of ability.

The sanctuary table is a place where novices, beginners and guys who have run bad can play guys who are in their same boat. The rating is set low enough that if you play in the sanctuary your rating will likely go up. The sanctuary is designed to be a short term place where guys can play and maybe win and improve their game.
For you sharps its actually a good thing for you guys. Sure, I know you're salivating about sitting with a bunch of beginners. But if you think about it those guys will play on the regular tables, lose, and figure they can never win and leave. This gives them a place to go and get a little experience.

SBR john, are there really "sharps" that spend there time playing for sbr points?? Even the 5/10 table here is like 0.01/0.05 in real life terms

I must be really bad, I don't even see a rating for me in the cashier's section and I'm able to sit at Sanctuary..

it's under tools then statistics on the main sbr poker page, not the cashier.
I was shocked to learn a couple regs were like 300 points lower than me last night. makes me suspicious of the whole process.
any way we could get even a rough outline on how it's calculated? Because at this point, beerdog is right, there's only ever like 10 people playing at once as it is, now you're gonna take half of them and put them
on the kiddy table?

at least give everyone an out, 'oh I've been running bad during the dailies' or 'rollover went terrible' or just 'haven't been able to play on a while, must've dropped me for that'...
when I compared this to yahoo pool, it made sense. you win less against 'bad' players and more against 'good' players. The difference was you had no idea who your opponents were. now, I got notes on just about anyone I could possibly play..

Poker players are obsessed with numbers. anyone who plays knows that.
to think you would implement a 'skill rating' and not have to explain how it calculates is crazy..

found it, thanks brother..I'm at the lowest possible score (1400)..I would assume these ratings are weighted toward the most recent ring games..My last couple sessions I took a beating, playing hands I normally wouldn't, in hopes of a quick rollover..Good rating for me though, I guess I'll be sitting in the sanctuary today..

Z,
I think "sharp" is a relative term. No, neither Phil or Daniel is sitting in at SBR playing for points. But make no mistake, there are some very good players who play SBR poker (I'm not one of them, but I know who they are...and I try to avoid them!)

I like it. I manage to cash in tourneys often enough but rarely end up with better than half the prize.
Might be a chance to keep a bit more after rollover.
Someone mentioned I was the worst player on SBR in a game recently. But 1420 is solid proof I am not eh!
Lucky you don't have to be good to win around here at least.

Hmm, my rating is 1478. That is bad, right? I am not great at poker, but I am pretty positive I have won a lot more chips than lost overall during my tourney rollovers.

I'm making mine public.
It's 1404. That means if you can't win points from me you should never play again. That's how bad it is.

Mine is 1509 and I wouldn't avoid anyone. But I certainly respect the good players. The top 250 list is a dead give away on who to be careful with.

If you want noobs to feel more comfortable, just add a .1/.2 table. Then the degens who can't even amass a buyin for 1/2 can still get some action.
Right now, there's 9 guys playing and none of them want to embarrass themselves playing at Sanctuary.

Another thing I hadn't thought of, part of what brings action to the poker table is the illusion of "bad luck". A friend and I were arguing over who was the better poker player, so we made a bet in which we'd score 20 of our friendly sit n' go games like holes of golf. A win was worth 1 pt, sixth was worth 6, etc. low score wins. We posted the score up on the fridge in our egotistical showdown.
By the time we were done, we had a hard time even getting games together as people saw the consistency with which the two of us were winning the money. I won the bet, but the game really suffered.
TL;DR: Giving people a bad score and telling them there's a kiddie table to play on is likely to make them stop playing altogether.

no, it really isn't. i obviously can't compare the two, and maybe the TOP of the list is comparable, but there are a lot of bad players on that list.
i tried to sit next to carseller4 just now, and it wouldn't let me because he's at the kiddie table. lol
