Easy to say now. Anyway, I basically buy and hold, selling a couple losers each year for the 3k tax loss.

If you just keep a chart up all day in the background with RSI and a couple other metrics on it....candles over a 30 min period clearly showed it happening in time yesterday....but if you're a holder for the 9+month period you'll be fine just reloading on the positions....fundamentals didn't change...so just watch the next quarter and play it that way. Good luck

lots of people who are retired are just gambling by being in markets instead of bonds, should we have sympathy for them?

If you are currently retired or within 5-7 years of....and still heavy in stocks and not fixed income investments or others.....you need to beat your manager over the head with your cane. So no...no sympathy for not being more risk averse in the later stages of planning.

Unrealized losses....meaning it's still in and on the way back when they'll use it....other allocations in the accounts should have offset it if done correctly. If a 60 year old is using it....more than likely they are taking dividends/other income from more than stocks. Not saying yesterday didn't suck....just that it won't make a retiree skip a power bill next month.

thanks...the market when it came back only came back to pre 2008 levels, so in essence people only got back what they lost, 3 years of gains went by the boards...so that 3 years is essentially lost ( DEPENDING ON THE PORTFOLIO ) JUST A LAYMAN'S PERSPECTIVE

Well it went up 100% and doubled its value since you posted this. My 401k is in 7 digits now. I may have to retire sooner.

You should be a long term investor. You posted this thread in 2011.
