Five Ohio State football players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, must sit out the first five games of the 2011 season for selling awards, gifts and university apparel, plus receiving improper benefits in 2009, according to the NCAA.
The players are eligible for the bowl game because the NCAA determined they did not receive adequate rules education during the time period the violations occurred, Lennon said. The NCAA also said that Ohio State did not receive a competitive advantage in the incident.
The NCAA said in its news release that its policy for spending players for bowl games or championship events "recognizes the unique opportunity these events provide at the end of a season, and they are evaluated differently from a withholding perspective." Lennon said the ruling in this case is consistent with that policy.
"We were not as explicit with our student-athlete education as we should have been in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years regarding the sale of apparel, awards and gifts issued by the athletics department," Smith said in a statement. "We began to significantly improve our education in November of 2009 to address these issues. After going through this experience, we will further enhance our education for all our student-athletes as we move forward."
The logic stinks, as does ESPN's spelling.

The guys at the Tattoo parlor could have said the signed memorabilia were gifts instead of ratting them out.

after hearing more of the story it makes sense now. There is no way a 5 game suspension is being handed down for a discounted tattoo. The tats are not even the issue but opened the door for the real issue, selling their memorabilia. That was incredibly stupid on their part.

They will appeal with the Cam Newton excuse, pleading ignorance more than likely.

Not a big deal for the buckeyes as there are a bunch of cupcakes on their schedule for the first 5 games except Miami and Michigan State. Boom and Pryor have solid backups. Posey and Adams are the biggest losses IMO

biggest impact is if Pryor decides to turn pro. not that he should, but if he's facing missing 5/13 of the season...

With the 5 game suspension and the fact that they have pay back the monetary value of the service, could see several of the players decide to turn pro if they thought they would be drafted high enough.

If they were using the money for their family, there is no way the can pay back the 1-2 K. The NCAA just doesn't realize how poor some of the student athletes are.
I am biased as an Ohio State fan, and I agree there needs to be a penalty, but I think 5 games is way to high of a price for selling items that belonged to them. They should of just done the bowl game, or of done 2 maybe 3 for next year. But even 3 seems like a high price for the crime.

They will probably get their suspensions downgraded to 4 games. I believe that's what happened to AJ Green for selling his jersey. That would be key because OSU's 5th game is Michigan State. Three of the first four are very winable games and the other is The U.
I think Rb Boom Heron is gone for sure now. The rest that are eligible for draft will see where they will go in the draft and what is going on with nfl cba then will decide.
Most ironic thing is Pryor selling his Sportsmanship Award. Classic.

I can't see Boom leaving. By that, I mean I don't see him having NFL potential. But Ohio State has great RB depth, so it really wouldn't be a big deal if he did. I thought even before the suspensions that Adams and Posey were going to leave anyways, so no big deals there. Soloman Thomas just isn't that good, so he's no big deal as well. Really this penalty will only hurt Ohio State with Pryor, I think it'll be reduced to 4 but I'm hoping the NCAA can be nice for once and reduce it to 2 or 3.

losing pryor for 5 games is a huge plus for the buckeyes. I will LOL so hard if he turns pro because of this, since he won't even be drafted this year if he did come out and probably won't next year either.

Believe me Pryor will be drafted. He's a great athlete, not a great QB. Expect him to be a decent WR in the NFL. I doubt he turns pro, but if he is we move on with Braxton Miller. Ohio State has good players around the QB, and I think have a chance to be undefeated no matter who's under center.

Some team will definitely waste their first pick on Pryor looking for a QB, probably the bengals.

I think that would be the case in 2012, But if he were to declare this year I bet he's drafted somewhere from late 2nd to early 4th as an Athlete.
