Without Farve to complete his circle of happiness, Madden will finally kick the bucket.

He will find plenty more to talk about. However, if he does any GB games next year, Favre will still get plenty of plugs from him.

Reports: QB Brett Favre will retire after 17 seasons

Eds: UPDATES with details, background, quotes; will be UPDATED.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Brett Favre has decided to retire from the NFL after 17 seasons.
FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the Green Bay Packers quarterback informed the team in the last few days. ESPN.com said that according to Favre's agent the quarterback told coach Mike McCarthy of his decision.
Mccarthy, agent Bus Cook and the Packers did not immediately return messages left by The Associated Press.
Favre has taken weeks and even months to make his decision after recent seasons, with Cheeseheads hanging on his every word.
But unlike the final game of the 2006 season — when Favre provided a cliffhanger by getting choked up in a television interview as he walked off the field in Chicago, only to return once again — nearly everyone assumed he would be back this time. They were wrong.
Only two years removed from perhaps his worst season, Favre had a resurgence in 2007. He broke several career records. Among them was Dan Marino's career mark for career touchdown passes. He powered the Packers to an NFC North title and a 13-3 regular-season record and earned his ninth Pro Bowl spot.
Surrounded by an underrated group of wide receivers who proved hard to tackle after the catch, Favre had a career-high completion percentage of 66.5. He threw for 4,155 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 15 interceptions.
It was a remarkable turnaround from 2005, Favre's final season under former head coach Mike Sherman, when he threw a career-worst 29 interceptions as the Packers went 4-12.
Given Favre's career resurgence, it was widely assumed that he was leaning toward returning for the 2008 season.
He even said as much just before the Packers' Jan. 12 divisional playoff game against Seattle, telling his hometown newspaper that he wasn't approaching the game as if it would be his last and was more optimistic than in years past about returning.
"For the first time in three years, I haven't thought this could be my last game," Favre told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald. "I would like to continue longer."
Those comments sent premature shock waves across the state — all the way up to the governor's office, where the political version of a false start was committed.
"Like all Packer fans, I am thrilled that Brett Favre will return to action next year for the green and gold," Gov. Jim Doyle said in a statement. "Brett Favre's tremendous work ethic and willingness to go out and play hard every day represent the true spirit of Wisconsin. I am hopeful that with this announcement behind us, Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers can focus on the task at hand: defeating the Seattle Seahawks."

Madden will just go BOOM! Tony Romo.

I'm surprised that Favre will hang it up now after the last season.

i wont believe hes retired until i see it with my own eyes, so much talk of his leaving the game for the last so many years, i think hes tired, but i also think he'll get the juices back by August

Listen up pal. Favre is one of the classiest guys the NFL has ever had. This is coming from a Bears fan. I truly appreciate his career and what he did for the game. He probably wouldn't be a good analyst you are right but I dont think he would even want to do that. He is a family guy and will be hunting and fishing with his free time pal!

I woke to hear this news coming across the ESPNnews screen this morning. Now even though I can't say I'm surprised by his decision, I must say I surely didn't expect it.

[ISBRFORUM]Brett Farve[/ISBRFORUM] is the last of the throwback type QB's will see for about 50+ years IMO, and I hate to see an end of an era.

if he would have retired in the summer, i would have believed it, but i am not sold, and apparently some in the media are not either. i hope he does what's best for him, but after such a great season with a young talented roster, he is exactly the type to give it one more shot, i think this is a boxers retirement ceremony, meaning not the final one

JJ you kill me man,I try to take up for you,and then you say something like that,I don't get it.I played asgainst this guy when he was at Southern Miss, and he is not only one of the top 5 quarterbacks to ever play, but he is one of the classiest guys to ever play.He played the game the way it was suppose to be played. He loved to play the game,he wasn't the highest paid quarterback in the league ever, you never saw him holding out for more money,he would have played the game for free. When you say things like that it reminds me of these reporters, snd tv commentaters that dog out guys that are busting their ass on the field ,when these morans have never gotten their fat ass off the couch.

There are differing reports coming from the Wis. newspapers:

jsonline.com
greenbaypressgazette.com

and Favre is holding no press conference, leading me to think this may not really be the end for him. He's a tough, gritty player, but he's also a bit of a Diva, too, as are most athletes - he could be looking for a little attention here.

I disagree. My current sports editor used to cover the Packers for years. One story he tells is of a "leak" that Favre was going to make a special announcement at an upcomig event in Green Bay. Newspaper and TV crews showed up in abundance, including my editor, only to have Favre say, "Hey, what are all you guys doing here."

He's the author of "Black and Blue: A Smash-Mouth history of the NFL's roughest division" .... it's good reading.

The pressure isn't from fans it's from media being in their face every f*ckin' minute... An NFL player IMO is done mentally before he's done physically in most cases... Much of this is because of the media...

I liked watching him and it just seemed like he was kicked out of the game... If you can't be #1 now why even try....that is the mentallity today...
