Do athletes know almost every player on the opposing team
I wanted to know do athletes on a team know every player's name on the opposing team? I'm talking about mainly the NFL because there are 11 starters on the offense and 11 on the defense but another 31 players that includes kickers, and backups.

You see how after players say good game and give them a handshake after every game and i wanted to know, are there some players like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning that shakes hands with some other players on the other team and NOT know his name? Or if you are a starting wide receiver and suddenly they put bench player to play against him on cornerback. Is there any way the guy might not even know who the other guy is?

of course in the NBA, i'm pretty sure they know every other guy's name on the other team because there is at most 14 players on the other teams roster even though that guy might not play any minutes but unless that player got picked up recently... i would assume kobe bryant would still know that guy in the bobcats bench right?

This is funny because I used to wonder this myself. I have never heard or seen anyone ask this before. However, I am 100% positive that nobody knows all the athletes on the opposition. In fact, due to the infrequency of the games, and the time spent practicing and watching film, the NFL may just have more guys who are familiar with eachother than the other sports. I would say hockey, where they play 82 games and minor leaguers being called up frequently due to injuries may be the athletes with the least amount of knowledge about other players. But no, I would doubt there is any athlete that knows all the players in the league.

      Good question though.

Well in the NFL, i mean some guy who doesn't cross paths with the other player such as a WR like Ocho Cinco not knowing who is the 3rd string defensive end on the texans because they never go at each other. Of course everyone would know the names of the STARTERS of the opposing team but i'm just thinking when Ocho Cinco says good game at the end to the other players... he probably don't even know that 3rd string DE on the Texans and just say good game xxx.

I can give you an example of them not knowing all other players..or even having heard their names before.

Terrell Suggs after game against Browns admitted, "I had never heard Peyton Hillis' name before this week, I know his name now, he is impressive."

if im not mistake even tom brady said he doesnt really know who danny woodhead is, he just heard his team mates calling him woody.. that was before woodhead became such a huge factor for them..
im not much of an nfl guy but i think i heard this on the post game interviews

lots of players have played together before against eachother, old team, in college, or for nba even in hs. all american games. all star games. same agents etc. they probably are just more of acquaintances than real friends or really knowing each other.

basketball i'd say most know almost everyone in the league.

football most likely a whole different story, way too many players.

Wow so Tom Brady didn't know Woodhead when he was on the Pats team or when he was on the jets? I am shocked that he wouldn't know every guys name on the football tea.

                              Definitely not...FOR EXAMPLE:

Last year this happened after Brett Favre threw the game-winning TD to Greg Lewis in the final seconds of the 49ers game...

Lewis was in town around Brett's neighborhood and decided to stop by his house just to say "hey"...Brett didn't even know who he was. THESE TWO ARE TEAMMATES WHO JUST MADE A GAME-WINNING PLAY TOGETHER A FEW DAYS PRIOR...if you think opposing players all know each other, that's just stupid.

Brett must of been dazed and sexting....i mean dazed and cofused when Greg came over.

I heard it on KFAN (local radio station) I am pretty sure...can't remember exactly. I can't find any articles about this story tho so now i dont even know if it's true haha. It would be a little strange for something like this to be made up tho.

But you would say for certain that a starter on an NFL team would definitely know the names of all the starters on the other team they are facing right? I mean thats just 22 players.
