    Hi Dan,

You pose a good question; let me give you my top 10.

    ONLINE VS. LIVE POKER
There is a reason, actually about 10 of them in my mind, why online poker is so popular. Take a look at these and kiss your local game good bye!

NOT DIFFICULT TO FIND A GAME

How many times have you tried to get all of the friends together for a game? How many times did that fail? Well, if you are having trouble getting a game together when you want to play it’s probably time to get online. You can’t beat the commute either. Just turn on your computer and get to playing. No more driving long distances.

    PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Whether you are new to poker or just want some brushing up, online poker will fit the need perfectly. A lot of times new players will not know the blind structure of certain games, or are so new that they don’t want to embarrass themselves at a live game. Most poker rooms will teach you how to play your game of choice.

NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO PROBLEM

One of my favorite reasons to play online poker is the fact that you don’t have to be all dolled up to get a game going. Not to say that you need to be dressed up at your local game, but the fact that you can wear anything you want is a bonus. Put your favorite shorts, sweatpants and t-shirt on and get online for some poker!

    ANY LIMIT YOU WANT

Online poker allows you to choose almost any monetary limit you want. Whether you are a beginner looking for low limits or a pro looking for the monster limits, most sites accommodate both low and high limit games.

    MORE HPH

Online poker can be a very fast game, much faster than in real life. Because of this, players are able to play about twice as many Hands Per Hour. By playing more HPH, and playing solid poker strategies, you will be able to turn much quicker profits.

    TWO AT A TIME

Once you get the hang of your online poker room of choice, you can get two games going at once. A single player can have a hold ‘em game on one screen and a stud game on another screen. I don’t recommend this strategy to the beginner, but to the advanced player, it can mean even bigger profits!

    SAVE SOME MONEY

Live poker requires humans to deal the cards. Online poker uses encrypted, totally random programs to deal your cards. As with any human, there is an error factor and even professional poker dealers will make errors. Playing online, means goodbye to inadvertent flashing of cards or slow dealing.

    MEETING PEOPLE IS EASY

Believe it or not some people like to play poker socially. Playing poker online is a great way to meet people from around the world. In a single session, all ten players at the table could be from different time zones. Poker is incredibly popular in the U.S. and around the world, so if you are into meeting people at the table look no further than your online game.

    TIME FOR A QUICKIE?

How many times have you had the urge to kill some time and play a few hands of poker? If you are like me, it happens often. Driving to the casino or getting your friends together is not a very logical solution with only a few minutes to spare. You will probably still be waiting in line at the casino anyway. Just log onto your favorite poker site and play for as long or short of a time as you like. There are many more reasons why online poker makes sense, but these are the most important to me.

    Warm regards & Good Luck!!

Online poker is also great for people who don't have a poker face. But for those who are good at reading other people, online poker is a big disadvantage.

Personally i think for beginers, a friendly live gavme is better than an online game. At a live game, you can turn to your friends at the conclusion of the hand and ask "what did I do right, and what did i do wrong."

I prefer live games. I've played online, but there's nothing like sitting in a smokey bar tossing back a few cold ones and playing with your friends. I also prefer them over online because I can read people pretty well.

For me, it's hard to find other people to play poker with me.

Online poker is great, it's easy, fun, and play anytime you want, and play any limit you want.

I agree with everything PokerRoomReview mentioned so what are the advantages of playing in a casino? The number one advantage of playing in a casino is the games are more live. The games are generally softer and full of fish. Of course I can't speak for every brick & mortar cardroom but in the Bay Area the casinos are stocked full of fish. I equate the $40/$80 games around here to a $5/$10 game online. The games at the Bellagio are on the soft side as well due to the constant inflow of out of towners.
