at the local supermarket ( Shoprite).

Hard to believe they sell them that cheap, not one claw culls either. They have to catch them up in Maine/ Nova Scotia waters and ship them live hundreds of miles to CT.

What's a Maine lobster cost around the country ?

They used to feed lobster to slaves back in the slavery days...hard to believe.

Nothing like a couple of lobsters with good corn on the cob !

How much for lobster in like Vegas ( supermarket) ?

Little more history, off of all places a food store website:

Early Native Americans sometimes used lobsters to fertilize their crops. This happened way back in the 1600’s. Lobster catches were very plentiful back then. In colonial times, there are reports that lobsters were being served only to the poor, prisoners or servants. Historians have even found documents in which servants demanded that lobster not be served more than three times per week. In the 1840’s, New England society started demanding lobster. This was the true beginning of the specialization of lobstering as a harvest. At that time, five pound lobsters were considered small. By the 1880’s, the average lobster was down to a pound in size. This decline proved the need for laws protecting the lobstering industry. Today, there are many “lobster pounds” along the coastline. They are used to help preserve lobsters and help the species thrive.

Think 9.99 a pound rings a bell, (Phoenix) dint pay much attention, as wife was saying poor things and i was think how tasty they would be.

I was up in Maine last year and the lobster market is really suffering.

Prices have dropped tremendously over the past few years and it's really hurting the fishermen.

there's a variety of reasons for the drop in demand

                              JJ,

The Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island governments stopped shooting lobster up with antibiotics/roids about 15 years ago. The waters are safe in Canada Pal, but not sure about Maine waters though. Something tells me the state of Maine fisheries officials are still injecting lobsters off the coast of Maine with antibiotics/roids.

Thats what I used to do for a living started when I was 7 and stopped in 1997 when the government had a federal buy out for all commercial fishermen. At that point the hand writing was on the wall.

They put quotas on days people could fish, and set trap limits for lobstermen. Then reduced the trap limit over time to where it is now. This was a state decision but they got federal money to do it I know New Hampshire did it as well, not sure about Mass.

The thing is lobster are a lot cheaper now than they were even back in the mid 80s when I was a kid. I am sure it is mostly due to the economy these days also that lobsters arent considered a luxury anymore. I was shipping them and driving them all over the country all thru the 90s up til I quit.

Out here in California Wal Mart used to sell them for 6.99, so you know that they arent worth much too close to home.

But back in the mid 80s they would be 2.75 or so off the boat. And local retail would be 4 bux or so. And the price would usually go up a dollar every half pound in size up to anything over 3 lbs being about 7.99 a pound retail.

Was actually thinking about going back and starting up again, they have the system sort of figured out and there is a cap on everyone and also tehe overall amount of gear allowed. So your percentage will always be the same. No new traps in, there is a hard cap and you have to wait for someone to die, sell out or retire to get new people in. But since the new generation is so lazy and not willing to work the line moves pretty fast.

But yeah for the local guys they were getting 2.75/300 a lb last week. But it is the high time right now so the price has more than likely dropped. Summer is wnding down and they are either picking the meat, flash freezing the tails and shipping them to Europe or putting them in pounds (pools) and letting them harden up so they can sell them for more.

It isnt what it was where you could get rich pretty easilly, but you can, with alittle more work make a decent living at it still. You just have to know what youre doing these days.

and what would I have to charge you to do that ? I don't think it would be any cheaper than your supermarket even if I only charged what it cost me ( no profit). I'd have a hard time getting dry ice too, have to go at least 20 miles for that.
