Willie Mays or De Wayne Wise catch?Costas is too dramatic over Mays.
Anyone see the Bob Costas special on just the Willie Mays over the shoulder 1954 world series catch?Sure,it was a great catch in the clutch but on any given day or week you see web gems as good. These guys are pros,it's expected of them to routinely do the impossible.I thought Costas was going to have a bodily reaction over the Mays catch where he just looked too much in glee to be just smiling about the catch.Costas is annoying because he's too dramatic. He thinks he's some poet whose work will be admired 100 years from now..

The DeWayne Wise catch that was a clutch play saving Buerhle's perfect game was a better catch than Mays's in my opinion.Anyone else think so?

So what other plays in baseball such as the Mays catch just seem to get an over abundance of airplay and praise?

Ex Pitcher Bob Feller who is known as kind of a grumpy guy said that Costas was over the top thinking it was the be all to end all of catches on that 1/2 hour Costas show dvoted to the catch.

A catch like that in the regular season does not even compare to a catch in the World Series. Even if it saves a perfect game.

Mays catch has been overrated to a degree, yes.

99% of us a posting have no real way to estimate the gravity and how great mays catch was (we weren't alive, and we don't have 7 camera angles)

I do know that the Polo grounds was like almost 500 feet to center, so part of the greatness in that catch was prob how far he ran to get there... but we can't tell that from the clips.

but the best part of the mays catch from most accounts was the throw he made into 2nd to hold the runner.....

wise's play was great, given the situation and that 95% of homers robbed are usually way high fly balls that the outfielder has time to camp under get his timing, feel the wall and then jump....

wise made his homerun robbery on a dead run, jumping from far way and just barely snagging it

the only way it could have been better, was if it was in the post season.

Buehrle's play off the mound this year may have been an even better play actually

Yes Willie Mays says his catch was nothing in 1954, he says the throw is what made the play.

Reason the throw was what made the play is the runner could have tagged from second and scored at home.

Mays was about 430 feet from home and running at full speed and as soon as he caught the ball he turned and threw the ball like a God of baseball

Jim Edmonds made a catch a few years ago that was almost identical to Mays' catch except that he was diving while he did it; best catch ever, IMO.

edmonds catch was pedestrian compared to mays.... he ran about 15 yards for it, big deal.... you see a catch like that once a week in baseball
