Would you like take months of parental leave like Swedish men ?
EDIT: Would you like to take months of parental leave like Swedish men ?

Mikael Karlsson owns a snowmobile, two hunting dogs and five guns. In his spare time, this soldier-turned-game warden shoots moose and trades potty-training Tips with other fathers. Cradling 2-month-old Siri in his arms, he can’t imagine not taking baby leave. “Everyone does.”

From trendy central Stockholm to this village in the rugged forest south of the Arctic Circle, 85 percent of Swedish fathers take parental leave. Those who don’t face questions from family, friends and colleagues. As other countries still tinker with maternity leave and women’s rights, Sweden may be a glimpse of the future.
In this land of Viking lore, men are at the heart of the gender-equality debate. The ponytailed center-right finance minister calls himself a feminist, ads for cleaning products rarely feature women as homemakers, and preschools vet books for gender stereotypes in animal characters. For nearly four decades, governments of all political hues have legislated to give women equal rights at work — and men equal rights at home.

Swedish mothers still take more time off with children — almost four times as much. And some who thought they wanted their men to help raise baby now find themselves coveting more time at home.
But laws reserving at least two months of the generously paid, 13-month parental leave exclusively for fathers — a quota that could well double after the September election — have set off profound social change.

Companies have come to expect employees to take leave irrespective of gender, and not to penalize fathers at promotion time.

This thread confirms my views that we should get rid of obsolete gender roles. I hope more countries will look at Sweden as a leading example of how we can redefine ourselves and the way we look at the opposite sex.

I know several women who decided to work and the husband/bf stayed at home with the baby. When the woman makes 25-50% more money than the man, then this decision should be a no-brainer.

If both people make a lot of money, I might recommend outsourcing childcare. Otherwise, how many women make more money than their guy? Women usually don't like dating guys who make less money than them. Out of that group, how many women would want their guy to take parental leave instead of hiring another party to help?

I've never dated a guy who made more than me. And the same goes for several of my friends.

I would love it. I'd much rather my son's father be at home with my child than a stranger, regardless if we suffered a bit financially during that time. Although in Sweden we wouldn't as his leave would be paid.

I could never stay home as I would feel like a failure and the women in the relationship. I can see if guy is between jobs but anything permanent is just not masculine

It doesn't surprise me that a woman who frequents a largely blue collar male-dominated online community would feel such on parental leave. How come you haven't dated someone who's made more than you? Dumb luck or what? On the childcare-if-wealthy issue, I'm most progressive there. If someone, or a group, can be found whose childcare ability I'm highly confident in, and both my S.O. and I make a lot of money, I will probably conclude that I'm doing more good by not taking off work. The baby's not going to remember anything at a real young age anyway, so if they get good care, what's the difference of the source?

Swedish soldier is an oxymoron much akin to french soldier.

In Canada, a mother and father of a newborn can split a total of 12 months of parental leave.

In Soviet Russia, parental leave splits you.

Hmmm...I know a few women who make more money than their spouse/partner. I do have to admit, though, that in most cases (argh...I hate to say that now) the man still brings home a higher salary.
Now, you say most women would rather want to stay home...I think that is the case when it comes to women who still think like our moms did. If I am in a relationship that is mature enough to have a baby...then I should believe that my partner can be the primary caretaker in the baby's life just as well as I am.
