    Bankroll Question
Hey guys, I'm fairly new to this and I'm just wondering what a decent starting point would be. I don't want to start too low where one bet could cut into my ability to bet, but I also don't want to start too high to the point where I could get stupid with bets just because the money is there. Just wondering what some of you guys think. Thanks

I think you should bet how much you can afford to lose. Honestly if you're new to betting I wouldn't do more than 300-500 dollars. Have good money management and know that each bet you make should be realistically 3% of your bankroll. Some people say 2% others say 7% but yeah, its your call.

To be honest, if you're new to betting. I wouldn't recomend depositing right now unless you're really well off. It'd be smart to just test some stuff out using the SBR Book or even just tracking your plays. But if you are set on depositing, I wouldn't deposit anymore than $500, and I wouldn't bet more than $10-20 a game.

whatsgood, I like your idea, and that's what I've been doing sorta. Just recording my picks for myself and seeing how things go. I've done fairly well and that's why I'm thinking about trying it for real now. I realize it's probably easier making picks when there's not real money involved, but I don't see the harm in trying as long as like you guys have said, I am smart about how much I gamble with. As far as that goes, from what whatsgood and mdemps have said I'm thinking $400 is the right place to start, with bets not over $12 (3%).

Now as far as placing bets, from what I've heard and read, if I want to survive in this I should pretty much forget about parlays. Is that true? Or are they a good idea? Thanks for the help guys.

Makes sense. $400 with $12 and under bets definitely seems safe. If you are hitting consistently, then deposit a bit more and up the size. Def. make sure you don't up the unit size without upping the bankroll size though. I wish you the best of luck

And thanks for the points by the way.

              Thanks bud, and no problem.
If I'm hitting consistently, hopefully I won't have to deposit more, and I'll just use the book's money
I think that's where I'll have to be most careful, if I go down some and then try to make a big bet to make it all back. That could get dangerous I assume.

Posted picks in the NCAAB forum, went 3-2 so far with an even money and +140 winner so I'm doing ok so far.

handicap the games first if you are betting to make money. bet as much as you are comfortable with, and if your bankroll goes up start upping your bets.

Common sense stuff I guess. I say go with more than 2% as far as bet size. I say go more like 10% on each bet, but I win 2 out of 3, so I just like to get that cash rolling in, and not waste time.

Yeah forgot about that, no need to deposit if you're hitting of course. But yeah, that was a big problem of mine when I first started. I'd lose a bet and then chase big with my next two or three bets. I lost all in my account two or three times back in the day. Wasn't really too much money, so it was definitely worth the learning experience. Hopefully you can learn by my mistakes so you won't have to learn by yours

And congrats on the nice start as well. I'm having a pretty good night as well

As said above, stick to 2-3% of your bankroll for each individual bet. At first your bets will seem really small, but as you build your bank, you adjust your bet size. Always move it up or down as your bank moves, and keep a consistent 2-3%.

I agree with your position on not depositing again. Put money in once, whatever you can afford to LOSE and not sweat over. Then build it and play with their money.

Also, don't bet with emotion. You said that it is easier when there isn't real money involved, and that isn't true. At least it shouldn't be. You are making bets as an investment, trying to grow your bank. Your bets should seem as rational to you as if you were buying a stock, for example. I assume you already know this, but don't let the fact that you have money in an account change the way you approach making wagers. If you have been capping successfully, then keep doing what you have been and you will be fine. Also don't get frustrated and do anything silly when you hit a dry spell.

                    Good luck!

Stay away from parlays and teasers until football season. Teasers can be profitable in the NFL in the right scenario. Most importantly starting out is money management and not tilting/chasing

Thanks for the advice Steeve and fsu. Knowing my personality the hardest part will be not chasing after a loss, but I'm definitely going to focus pay attention to that. Just thought of another question, I think I already know the answer but why not ask?
So I start at $400 making 3% bets and go on a cold streak down to around $200, do I then make my bets $6 since that is what 3% of my bankroll is then?

Chasing after a loss will be hard...I've cashed out fairly decent this NBA season and was paid out nicely for NFL. I was up 7400 about 3 weeks ago, lost a couple $200 bets, then chased with $500 and lost 3 of those. I cashed out 5100, and took all my money out of Bodog. It would seem that if I have money in the system(bodog) I would treat it different because it wasn't actually in my hand so if I lost a few hundred it didn't really bother me.

So that being said I've took my money out of bodog, and started doing business with my brothers guy. I'll take better care/money management if I'm dealing with cash in hand.

DON'T CHASE, it will be hard not to do so at times, especially after a tough loss. Gotta have some discipline.
