That's the whole idea. You do not want the child to become unresponsive to discipline at 8 so you do what you have to do at 4 to correct that behavior.

It's like training a dog not to bite people. Much easier to train a one year old dog than a 5 year old dog not to bite people. Then you end up shooting the dog because the dog bit a child.

It's not about ratting on his parent. The child had a doctor's appointment already scheduled for when he returned to Minnesota. Peterson said himself that if he'd thought he had done anything wrong he wouldn't have let the kid on the plane. Unless the child had been coaxed to lie - which he wouldn't have been because again, Adrian saw nothing wrong with what he did - then a 4 year old is obviously going to tell the truth when the doctor asked him what happened. Again, the child was four years old. Yes children need discipline but taking your 4 year old to your designated "whooping room", shoving leaves in his mouth and whipping him to the point that he has multiple cuts and welts all over his body not only that day but a week later is not "discipline". It's child abuse. For every story of a person turning out your definition of fine despite being whipped there is another of someone not turning out ok. Prisons are full of people who would've experienced the same type of beatings you did.

No 4 yr old kid should have those kind of marks from being "disciplined". It's pretty clear why the Doctor contacted the authorities about it. To me it sounds of the latter, that this went beyond the scope of positive punishment in the sense of negative reinforcement (to prevent the child to commit the behavior in the past lest he/he is beat with a twitch). Though this is a learnt behavior from AP since he was whacked with it as a child, theres countless other ways to punish a child, the least if which is through bodily harm. And they're filled with men who did have fathers. Just like they're filled with people who were beaten as a kid and those who weren't. And filled with people who weren't beaten by their dad whether he was in the picture or not but were by their mom or grandmother. My point was to those who say "I was beat as a kid and look how well I turned out". We can easily flip that and say "I wasn't beaten as a kid and look how well I turned out". Beating your child is not some guarantee that your kid is going to grow up with respect for authority and be a law-abiding citizen.

That sounds nice in theory, but certainly there has to be a line drawn somewhere, right? Not saying he crossed the line, we'll have to wait for all the facts, but certainly there is a line you can't cross. Something short of death or dismemberment.

I personally don't think a 4 year old should ever be beaten bad enough to leave marks like that. Hell, what age would that be considered acceptable? I spank mine when it is really needed and I have exhausted all other efforts. Mine is 6 and I could never imagine using force like that. That's just nuts.

From the report I read it was the kid shoving one if his other kids over a video game.
