    Buying a Laptop
Looking for a solid laptop to buy in the next couple of months...I have heard from several that ibm thinkpad/dell/toshiba/compaq/mac are all good...seems to me that it is more about the internal components that the name brand...

I am looking for a fast processor preferably 1.7 ghz or higher...40-60gb..assuming this is enough...not really sure about anything else...looking for a laptop that is fast. downloads are a minimum with me and I use Excel for some of my tracking purposes as well...

If anyone could steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it...

Fast moving world that's hard to keep up with. I would suggest to read some of the reviews at computershopper.com.

Dell sells refurbished models Austin, and you can probably pickup a better deal on one if you go that route.

Also, If you do buy a new Dell computer they have internet coupons. I know that onlooker has hooked Slash and myself up with some of those and we saved some coin.

I got a dual processor laptop from Acer for way less than a HP, Dell or Toshiba. Great computer and of course screaming fast.

You also might want to considering buying one off ebay Austin.

Get yourself down to Circuit City or the like and buy the cheapest laptop they have - probably about $500. If all you're going to use it for is surfing the web and a couple of Excel spreadsheets, then anything more than $500 is pretty much a waste of money.

while i agree with you tacomax...I don't want something that is slow...and I know RAM is crucial to having a fast machine...trying to buy an inexpensive as I can while not having to turn around in the next 24 months and buy another one

Get 1GB of RAM and you'll be laughing - and it should last you for years. As long as you're only using it for surfing and spreadsheet work, you really don't need anything more expensive.

There's a Acer with a 2.0Ghz AMD Turion chip, 80GB hard drive, 1GB memory, wireless card, DVD burner and Windows Vista for $569 at CC - this is way and above what you'll need for your use. I use my laptop for downloading, surfing & documents and it runs like a dream - that's even being 6 months old, with a slower chip and half the memory.
