Even Russia, the basket case of post-Soviet transformation, is better off today than it was under communism.
Of course the left will try to deny that, but if you can, try to take the real picture of living back then from people who were young or middle age at the end of communism, like me. Taking it from really old people is unreliable as old people tend to always idealize time when they were young.
There’s no question that dissolution of Soviet Union hit Russia proper worst: everybody just stole whatever wasn’t nailed down, which was not the case in countries like Czechoslovakia or Poland. Even so, Russian GDP per capita, PPP has grown from $8,000 to about $24,000 today, although that means a lot less than in other countries given Russia’s legal… peculiarities.
I feel you asked the wrong question, though: you should have asked “what would have happened had Russia stayed communist”, because that was the choice between at least 2 alternative paths after all.

Yes. His whole city (Varna) is now owned by a group that was founded by former soviet special forces-type guys. They are called "Tim". They started as a "security" firm (aka extortion) shortly after the fall of communism... now they own everything. Google "Tim Bulgaria" and check out their Wikipedia page. Pretty interesting.
But this oligarchic form of capitalism has created an extreme "haves and have nots" situation. So yes, you are correct.
My friend is a very intelligent and enterprising guy, but strangely, he appears to be defending this idea that communism is ok. Yea that was a problem with the soviet bloc as a whole. Their infrastructure was funneled directly from Mother Russia so when they withdrew they were left with power vacuums for "opportunistic" factions to seize control. If you lived and grew up in Eastern Europe during the Cold War you at least had a measure of relative security and stability.Comment -
