On April 10, police in Grass Valley, CA arrested Alfredo Alonzo-Hernandez, 25 for the robbery of a local convenience store, he has also been charged with assault and the attempted rape of the store clerk.
According to Grass Valley police Sgt. Steve Johnson, Alonzo-Hernandez walked into the Flyers convenience store at 5:10 a.m. and pointed a gun at the clerk.
Sgt. Johnson said: “He pushed her (the clerk) back into the back room, where he tried to force himself upon her. She was able to resist and grab the gun to point it away from herself.”

Johnson continued: “He threatened the clerk as he was leaving. He told her that if she told anyone, he would kill her.”
Alonzo-Hernandez got away with several hundreds of dollars.
Later in the day, police caught up with Alonzo-Hernandez at a nearby McDonald’s where he works. As it turns out, he is also believed to have burglarized the restaurant about an hour before robbing the convenience store.
Alonzo-Hernandez is in this country illegally and is currently incarcerated at the Nevada County Jail. His arraignment for both crimes has been put off until Friday, due to the fact that he needs an interpreter.
On April 13, police in Largo, FL arrested Salvadoran national Isaac Mendez Ramirez, 24 on two counts of capital sexual battery. He is alleged to have molested a 7-year-old child twice over a three month period.
The alleged molestations occurred in November 2008 and January 2009.
Ramirez is in this country illegally and is currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail.

U.S. Citizen Accused of Child
Molestation Arrested in Costa Rica A U.S. citizen identified as Bernard Rials accused of sexually abusing children in the United States was arrested Wednesday at his home in San José's Barrio Corazón de Jesús, according to a statement from international police agency Interpol.
Rials, 44, had admitted to having sexual relations with several children ages 8 to 14 in the state of Washington. He was also convicted of illegal possession of firearms in the state of Florida.
After being charged with child molestation in 2005, Rials fled the United States, traveling through South America until he arrived to Costa Rica in March 2006, the statement said. He had been living here illegally ever since.
The U.S. Marshals Service, together with Interpol, found him in San José. He faces deportation to the United States.

American arrested in Cambodia on child sex charges

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – An American man has been charged with soliciting sex from two Cambodian girls, officials said Wednesday.

Michael James Dodd of Washington, DC, was arrested at his rented house in the capital, Phnom Penh, on Sunday, said police Maj. Gen. Bith Kimhong.

He said police who raided the house found the two girls, ages 13 and 14, inside with Dodd.

Dodd was charged during a court appearance on Tuesday, said prosecutor Sok Kalyan. If convicted, Dodd could face up to 10 years in prison, Sok Kalyan said.

The suspect's Cambodian lawyer, So Dara, said his client denied the allegation against him.

Cambodia has long been a magnet for foreign pedophiles because of poverty and law enforcement undermined by corruption. But the country's police and courts have stepped up action against sex offenders in recent years.

A 59-year-old Michael James Dodd is listed as a sexual offender on a Web site of the Department of Law Enforcement of the State of Florida in the US. The listing gives his last registered address as Syracuse, New York.

It was not immediately clear if the man, who was convicted in July 2002 of sexual abuse of a child, was the same man arrested in Phnom Penh. - AP

Santa Barbara man arrested after seeking "guide" on Craigslist to procure Thai children for sex

LOS ANGELES - A Santa Barbara sales representative made his initial appearance in federal court here this afternoon to face federal child sex tourism charges after he allegedly advertised on the Internet site Craiglist.com for a "guide" to help him procure children for sex in Thailand.

Michael Patrick Mahoney, 51, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents at Los Angeles International Airport Saturday night as he boarded a flight ultimately destined for Bangkok, Thailand. Mahoney is charged in a criminal complaint with one count of traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places, a violation that carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. At Mahoney's initial hearing this afternoon, U.S. Magistrate Charles F. Eick set his bond at $100,000.

When ICE agents arrested Mahoney, he had in his possession children's stuffed animals, Disneyland shirts, chocolates, and approximately $800 in U.S. and Thai currency.

The investigation into Mahoney began last week after ICE agents spotted his suspicious posting on the Craiglist website. Subsequently, an undercover ICE agent posing as a travel guide e-mailed the defendant and offered to make the requested arrangements. In subsequent e-mails and phone conversations with the undercover agent, Mahoney expressed interest in engaging in sexual activities with 12 and 13-year-old Thai boys and girls. Mahoney asked the agent to call him to confirm that he would be able to procure the children for sexual encounters with him in Bangkok this week.

"This case is yet another disturbing reminder that those who have a sexual interest in children believe they can evade detection and prosecution by committing sex crimes overseas," said Robert Schoch, special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in Los Angeles. "Fortunately for the world's young people, foreign authorities and U.S. law enforcement are allied in their resolve to combat this problem and bring the perpetrators to justice."

ICE received assistance in the investigation from its attaché office in Bangkok and members of the Los Angeles Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Mahoney is being charged under the provisions of the PROTECT Act, which was signed into law by President Bush five years ago. The PROTECT Act substantially strengthened federal laws against predatory crimes involving children outside the United States by adding new crimes, increasing sentences, and modifying the burden of proof requirements for federal prosecutors to bring charges.

Mahoney's arrest is part of Operation Predator, an ongoing ICE enforcement initiative launched five years ago to target those who prey upon and sexually exploit our nation's children, including Internet pornographers, human traffickers, international sex tourists, and foreign national sexual predators. Since the initiative began, ICE agents have arrested more than 11,000 individuals nationwide.

ICE encourages the reporting of suspected child predators and any suspicious activity through its toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2ICE. This hotline is staffed around the clock by investigators.

Suspected child sexual exploitation or missing children may be reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, an Operation Predator partner, at 1-800-843-5678 or www.cybertipline.com.

Police arrest more than 50 in child-sex probe

TORONTO -- Authorities have arrested more than 50 people in what police said Thursday is the largest-ever coordinated investigation of Internet-based child sexual abuse in Canada. John Bilinski, the officer in charge of the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre, said the investigation centered on an Internet ring through which participants exchanged child porn. Police said they seized more than 130 computers, dozens of hard drives and thousands of disks and other computer storage hardware in raids over several days this week.


“These online images and videos contain real victims, real children being sexually abused,” said Chief Constable Derek Egan. “These arrests are important for many reasons...We will not be deterred from protecting children and making the Internet a safer place for everyone.”

Phnom Penh - Cambodian police said on Wednesday they had arrested a Canadian man who allegedly sexually abused two young girls in the costal resort town of Sihanoukville.

Police arrested 68-year-old Daniel Lavigne on a tourist bus travelling from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh on Monday after he allegedly sexually abused two sisters aged 10 and 12.

Regional migration police chief Som Saruen said Lavigne had confessed to "indecent acts" against the children but denied having sexual intercourse with them.

Lavigne told police he was a boyfriend of the girl's mother, who police said was also being investigated.

Som Saruen said Lavigne was scheduled to appear before a court and be formally charged on Thursday. (dpa)

Ex-priest sex offender returned to prison

A former Geneva priest who served time for molesting two teenage girls in Geneva and Aurora is back in prison after losing his housing in an approved residence for sex offenders.

According to the Rockford Register-Star, Mark Campobello, 44, was returned to prison at the Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet.

January Smith, an Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman, told the newspaper that "All parolees have an approved host site, particularly sex offenders. They cannot live in a residence with children or close to a school."

According to the article, Smith would not say why Campobello, who had been living in Crystal Lake, lost his housing.

"He was not charged or arrested," IDOC spokesman Derek Schnapp told the newspaper, noting that it was not unusual for a parolee to lose his host site. "Could he go back on parole if he finds a new host site? Absolutely, he can. We would just have to approve it."

Campobello had been given an additional two months in prison for a parole violation in July of 2008 and had been returned to prison for another parole violation in April 2008. He had been released from prison in February 2008.

Campobello pleaded guilty in May 2004 to molesting the girls in 1999 and 2000 at St. Peter Church in Geneva and Aurora Central Catholic High School. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford agreed to pay $2.2 million to settle a lawsuit by the two women in 2007.
