MLB: anyone want to comment on the Umpire gaffe in the Angels/Astros game?

This rule has been around forever. A pitcher has to face one batter! Only exception is pitcher on mound getting injured. This rule is pretty clear.

An offense can pinch-hit as much as they want. The pitcher must face at least one at-bat!

How the F can the umpire blow this one? For me, this is much bigger than the Angel Hernandez HR call. The HR call has some judgment involved. The Astros pitcher fiasco is a rule interpretation. MLB got this one wrong, and I'm outraged.

I'm still not over how a flyball in the outfield can be called an infield fly rule in that 1 game playoff last year.

Vince Russo and Eric Bischoff must be helping baseball make some of these rules and calls. Baseball has some of the dumbest rules of any sport in the world.

it really should be called the infielder fly rule, because it's if infielders can catch the ball with "ordinary effort" and not where they catch it. that being said, i didn't agree with that call that game and it sucked.

I did see the injury exception used one time. Lee Smith came on to pitch for the Cubs. He felt tightness in his shoulder and just couldn't go. So, he departed w/o throwing a pitch. That's the only time I saw it.

I like the press conference with Bo Porter after the game. He was talking about how his interpretation of the rule is that he was allowed to change pitchers when the other team changed pinch hitters. I'm sure he knew how the rule works. I'm impressed with the fact that he was able to convince an entire MLB umpiring crew that an obvious rule was not so obvious.

That would help - but some people would still be confused because the rule can apply even if it's an outfielder who actually makes the play on the ball.

That play was actually the correct call. It was a ball that the ss could have made with "ordinarry effort." The source of the confusion was the ump being late in making it. On an "ordinary effort" play, it shouldn't take that long to make the call.
