This has to be the dumbest proposed rule change by the NFL so far
Making it illegal for a runner to lower his head...

Emmitt Smith criticizes proposed helmet rule Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2013, 8:13 PM EDT The NFL’s Competition Committee has proposed a rule that would penalize runners for lowering their heads to initiate contact with defenders. The NFL’s all-time leading rusher thinks that’s kooky talk. And he has a good point. “If I’m a running back and I’m running into a linebacker, you’re telling me I have to keep my head up so he can take my chin off?’’ Smith told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “ You’ve absolutely lost your mind .’’ Football is always about getting lower than the other guy. And if the running back doesn’t get his head low, Emmitt’s right; the running back is going to take a helmet square in the chin. “As a running back, it’s almost impossible [to not lower your head],’’ he said. “The first thing you do is get behind your shoulder pads. That means you’re leaning forward and the first part of contact that’s going to take place is your head, regardless. “I disagree with the rule altogether. It doesn’t make any sense for that position. It sounds like it’s been made up by people who have never played the game of football.’’ The rule still hasn’t been passed. At next week’s league meetings in Arizona, at least 24 owners will have to vote in favor of the change. If the rule is adopted, look for a lot more criticism — from players and from fans. And if the players hope to prevent the rule from being passed, the time to make noise is now.

I hadn't heard the proposed rule change. That's truly moronic if true.

It might save a few lives or at least a few players from being in wheelchairs

Rule would make runnings back totally useless. How are you going to pick up that extra yard if you don't lower your head and fight for it?

By using your feet to move forward and arm to the face of the defender.

Yet they never talk about regulating helmets. This is crazy talk.

You can't make the NFL any safer than it is right now. They have to stop this nonsense.

4th and 1 on the Goal line and Stephen Jackson gets the ball. Someone like Grady Jackson breaks through the block and heads towards him. Does Stephen Jackson run upright and try to stiff-arm Grady or lower his head and dive for the goal line?

I'd argue this is more dangerous to running backs because they don't have a way to defend themselves. They'll have to run upright. They will either have their knees taken out or get plowed in the chest over and over.

In this scenario Steven Jackson jumps above Grady Jackson and lands in the end zone.

                      and it passed. Seriously?

The NFL has passed a rule that makes it a penalty for a running back to strike defenders with the crown of their helmet.

I give it about 3 weeks into the season before they abolish that rule.

What the fukk are running backs going to do?

I can understand that lawsuits can be the driving factor. Maybe they can show some tapes at the start of the year to every team of what will be called on this. The preseason will be a good chance for them to get used to the new rules. It's going to be completely different in the next season in the NFL. Do I think it will work? I am going to wait and see on this.

I see your Emmitt Smith and raise you a Jim Brown.

Jim Brown never lowered HIS head.

The game wasn't always like it has been recently.

                                It will be fine IMO.

Its about liabilty issues and lawsuits. Down the road when some former player tries to sue the league the NFL can say "we told you it was dangerous and don't do it"
