The Indianapolis Colts, coming off their second loss of the season, are the NFL betting favorites at home Sunday to hand the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season.
Can the Chiefs Maintain their perfect start?
The Kansas City Chiefs are a perfect 3-0 on the field and at the betting windows, allowing a stingy 12.7 PPG. Todd Haley’s club will have its defense put to the test in Sunday afternoon’s clash with the Indianapolis Colts, who have scored 29.2 PPG en route to a 2-2 spread record.
Sports books opened Indianapolis as a nine-point home favorite, with the NFL pointspread quickly dropping to as low as 7 ½. Betting shops first set the ‘total’ at 44, with early ‘over’ wagers driving the number north to as high as 45 ½.
Kansas City has had an extra week off since its 31-10 win as a 2 ½-point home dog against the San Francisco 49ers. The Sept. 26 triumph saw the Chiefs’ defense hold the opposition to 43 rushing yards, while registering five sacks.
Kansas City’s Matt Cassel connected on 16-of-27 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. The six-year quarterback guided his offense to 21 first downs during its 34 minutes of possession.
The Chiefs receiving duo of Dexter McCluster and Dwayne Bowe united for 130 yards, each scoring once. McCluster caught a 31-yard strike to spot the Chiefs a 7-0 lead, while Bowe’s 45-yard trip to the end zone came in the third quarter.
Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers grabbed an interception for a second straight game, his squad’s only ‘pick.’ Flowers and his mates did not allow a touchdown until the game’s final play, which lifted the matchup’s combined 41 points ‘over’ the NFL betting ‘total’ of 38.
Kansas City’s only road game came one week earlier, with Cassel and Co. winning, 16-14, as three-point dogs against the Cleveland Browns. Flowers’ interception was returned for the Chiefs’ only touchdown.
The Chiefs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games, dating back to last season. ‘Under’ backers have cashed at 4-3 during that span.
Indianapolis Colts will be looking to get their season back on track after last week
Indianapolis lost a back-and-forth affair last week, 31-28, as a seven-point road favorite against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Oct. 3 setback saw neither foe lead by more than seven points.
Colts quarterback Peyton Manning aired the ball for 352 yards, completing 33-of-46 throws. The 10-time Pro Bowler hit tight end Dallas Clark and wide receiver Austin Collie for one touchdown each.
Indy’s Joseph Addai gained 63 yards on the ground, reaching the end zone twice. The 27-year-old did most of his damage in short-yardage spots, averaging 3.9 YPR.
The Colts’ defense gave up 337 yards, allowing three touchdowns in Jacksonville’s trio of red zone trips. Linebacker Gary Brackett logged a season-high eight tackles.
The combined 59 points soared above the battle’s ‘total’ of 45 ½. Jacksonville’s Josh Scobee hit a 59-yard field goal with no time left to clinch defeat for the Colts.
Indianapolis won its only home game three weeks ago, 38-14, as a four-point favorite against the New York Giants. The Colts opened up to a 24-0 lead at halftime, piling up 410 yards of offense by the lopsided affair’s end.
The Colts are 8-2 ATS in their last ten meetings against the Chiefs, dating back to 1990. The ‘under’ is 3-0 in the last three battles that Indy has hosted.
Weather and Live odds
Sunday’s kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET), with CBS providing television coverage in some markets. Lucas Oil Stadium’s retractable roof should be open with Indianapolis’ weather forecast calling for a high of 82 degrees and calm winds.
