Law enforcement has found the body of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The newspaper says a police source has confirmed the body is that of the former University of Memphis star, although it hasn't been confirmed officially.
The body was found in a wooded area in southeast Memphis. Wright has been missing since July 19, and his family has said it suspects foul play. He was last seen leaving his ex-wife's home near Memphis, and at that time was believed to be carrying some amount of cash.
He was in Memphis to see his six children, who were set to drive to Atlanta with him. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Wright was paid about $55 million during his NBA career, from 1996-2009.

Law enforcement officials have found the body of missing Memphis basketball star Lorenzen Wright, who is pictured in this 1995 file photo from his days at the University of Memphis.
Law enforcement officials have found the body of missing Memphis basketball star Lorenzen Wright in a wooded area at Hacks Cross and Winchester in southeast Memphis.
A law enforcement source confirmed the body was that of Wright, who has been missing since July 19, though the Memphis Police Department won't officially comment. Police are referring to their investigation as a "death investigation."
The body was found by someone who called police today.
At the Collierville home of Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Robinson Wright, white bed sheets covered the windows. A man pulled aside the sheets to answer the doorbell and raised his finger to ask for a moment. Then at 4:15 p.m., sounds of wails and crying rose from inside the house. The man did not return to the door.
A woman who arrived just as the family heard the news, said, “I’m just here to see my sister.” She left about 10 minutes later, with two children, a girl and a boy wearing a Lorenzen Wright Grizzlies jersey.
About 4:45 p.m., eight or nine adults and children left the house in a caravan of cars, including two identical black Porsche SUVs and a green sedan.
Family members, friends and some former University of Memphis basketball players, including Penny Hardaway and Elliot Perry, were gathering near the wooded area near Hacks Cross and Winchester.
Police sources confirmed earlier that they are investigating a 911 hangup call from Wright's cellphone made July 19.
Wright was thought to be carrying some amount of cash when he was last seen leaving his ex-wife’s Collierville home, fueling concerns he may be the victim of foul play, according to a Collierville police report released today.
He recently flew from Atlanta to Memphis to visit friends and his six children, friends said. He was scheduled to drive back to the Atlanta area July 19, with his six children and a friend. He was last seen at about 2 a.m. July 19, leaving his ex-wife’s Whisperwood Drive home. His former wife told police she doesn’t know who he left with or what type of car they were in, according to the missing person’s report.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Wright played 13 years in the NBA, including five with the Memphis Grizzlies, after playing two seasons at the University of Memphis.
Wright kept up an active Twitter feed that he often updated several times daily. It featured a picture of him playing in the old Grizzlies uniform, wearing No. 42 and guarding Shaquille O’Neal. It includes observations about his kids (playing Monopoly with them, teaching them to swim), including a picture from July 14, just days before his disappearance, featuring a smiling Wright and six kids wearing Japanese chef hats at a hibachi restaurant.
The feed went suddenly dormant on Sunday, July 19, with a timestamp of 12:22:41 p.m., with a response to someone with a handle of THEonlyMARY_P.
It is just one word: "why." It is the last update from his feed, whcich had 125 followers and 375 tweets.

lorenzen was a good dude. my stepdad taught his sophomore english class when he was at the u of m, and he asked lorenzen to visit my sister's 4th grade class, which he took him up on. from what i heard he didn't do much but field an alley-oop or two and just really hung out and talked with the kids for an hour or so, but that to this day is one of my sister's happiest moments, when she got to go to the principal's office and take lorenzen wright back to her class. they had their picture taken together, just the two of them, and she's recently talked about that visit and how awesome it was that he came to visit her and her class. i just told her about this via text, and she had no idea. she'll probably cry hard knowing her. but anyway, he could have bs'd his way out of something like that, he knew he was nba-bound, but he did anyway. he was a good dude, sad to see him get caught in something like this, whatever it was.

Family and friends gathered at the scene where Memphis basketball star Lorenzen Wright, a former Hawk, was found in the city's southeast side, the Commercial Appeal is reporting. Enlarge photo
AJC File Lorenzen Wright was scheduled to drive back to the Atlanta area July 19, with his six children and a friend, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal reported.
Memphis police are referring to a "death investigation" and the newspaper is reporting that a 911 call made on July 19 from Wright's cellphone recorded loud gunshot blasts from what appeared to be several weapons before the call ended.
The Atlanta Hawks organization, for whom Wright played twice during his career, tweeted condolences for his family.
A post on the Hawks' Twitter page read: "Tonight our thoughts are with Lorenzen Wright and his friends and family. He will be missed."
The information on Wright's death is coming from an unnamed law enforcement source, the newspaper said. The Memphis Police Department won't officially comment, the Commercial Appeal said.
Wright's uncle, Curtis Wright, told the Associated Press that police called the player's father, Herb Wright.
Lorenzen Wright, 34, who had been missing since July 19, recently flew from Atlanta to Memphis to visit friends and his six children, friends said.
He was scheduled to drive back to the Atlanta area July 19, with his children and a friend, the Commercial Appeal said.
He was last seen at about 2 a.m. July 19, leaving his ex-wife’s Whisperwood Drive home, the newspaper said.
His former wife told police she doesn’t know who he left with or what type of car they were in, according to the missing person’s report.
The 6-foot-11 Wright starred at the University of Memphis before being drafted No. 7 overall in 1996 by the L.A. Clippers. He played for the Hawks from 1999-2001, spent the next five seasons with Memphis, and returned to Atlanta for 2006-08. He last played for Cleveland in 2008-09.
Wright's best season as a Hawk was 2000-01, when he averaged 12.4 points and 7.5 rebounds.
Before he went missing, the power forward split his time between Atlanta and Memphis, the AJC has reported.
He attended a couple of Hawks playoff games this spring, supporting his friend Josh Smith.
In January, Wright ran into Hawks vice president of public relations Arthur Triche at a restaurant, where they watched the BCS championship game.
"He was still the same outgoing, gregarious individual he always was," Triche told the AJC. "Nothing would have led us to believe something like this would happen."
Wright spoke then of catching on with another NBA team. But he did not play at all last season, ending a 13-year career.
Triche said he was unaware of Wright's alleged financial problems: The Commercial Appeal reported that his custom-built 17-room home in Eads, Tenn., was repossessed in May for $1.3 million, and that his Atlanta house was repossessed in January for $1.1 million.
The Associated Press and staff writers Marcus K. Garner, Larry Hartstein and Chelsea Cook contributed to this report.
