Can't say as I blame him off that effort. That was a walk in the park.

Hang on Batt, this could be a fun ride.

ugh ups and downs of horse racing...
While Nakoma had originally come out of her last start in fine order, after several days back in training she pulled up from a routine gallop with a pretty abrupt stumble and displayed some obvious discomfort/lameness immediately afterwards. X-rays led to a quick and straightforward diagnosis—she has a fracture at the top of her sesamoid (bone at the back of the ankle) on the opposite limb (left front) to which she had had that previous fracture.

The good news is that this is a very clean fracture and Dr. Madison believes the fragment can be removed arthroscopically with a solid probability that she can return to racing soundness. This should be more like a standard chip removal as far as timing/prognosis goes. Click for X-ray.

While given her age and previous history we considered simply retiring her from racing, since she does have a bit of talent and with the expectation that she can make it back relatively quickly from this setback, we have decided to go ahead with the surgery in hopes that she can return to the races in the late fall or so if all goes smoothly.

She’ll head down to Florida for the procedure and will rehab back at the farm down there, where she’ll be able to swim and build her fitness back up once she’s ready to return to activity.

but heh heh as on owner you are ever optimistic! a few more in the primer including
          Elevated: Workout

Elevated breezed four furlongs in :48.77 outside of Christopher Wool, a 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief out of Grade 1 winner Bleecker Street, this morning at Saratoga, displaying a willingness to rate off of that well-bred colt before finishing strongly in the stretch. She continues to train forwardly for Hall of Famer Bill Mott and we wouldn't expect it to be much longer before we start discussing potential debut targets.

            Paddock Buzz Workout Report

Paddock Buzz breezed her second half mile in :48.60 this morning while on the inside of On Broadway (Nashville) from the George Papaprodromou barn. Your daughter of Grazen had to be scrubbed on a bit through this drill, but her workmate is more of a sprinter type and has more natural speed. As you’ll see in the video above, Paddock Buzz galloped out extremely well and in trainer Dan Blacker’s opinion, the work only got better as it went on. While it’s still early and horses can spark more speed after breezing from the gate for the first time, it’s ours and Dan’s opinion that this filly is probably going to be best around two turns. Dan remains excited about Paddock Buzz and a debut at Del Mar this summer still appears well within reach.

              Caldera: Race Overview

Caldera is set to make his second start of the year this Thursday, June 25 in race 6 at Colonial Downs. He has drawn post 6 in a field of 9 horses and will have Nik Juarez aboard for the ride. Post time is set for 2:54 p.m. ET.

Your colt has been installed as the 6/5 morning line favorite for this contest and looks to be looming as the main threat on paper. There is a good amount if speed signed on in this group, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see him rate just off the pace, similar to his trip in the Bathhouse Row S. last year. We are hopeful that Caldera will put forward another big effort and set himself up for an exciting second half of the year. Best of luck!

              More on the competition:

#1 Who’s the King: this Parx-based gelding looks to be one of two main speed horses in this race and runs for the optional $50K claiming price for the Ness barn.

#2 Raise Cain: Gets some class relief off of two runs against stakes company. His best figures make him a threat—however, his last two starts have been lackluster.

#3 Holy Synchronicity: Takes a jump up in class from the claiming ranks and looks to be the other speed horse in this race.

#4 Lonesome Boy: Has improved significantly since joining his current connections at Parx. Can show a bit of speed too, but doesn’t look quite as quick as the two drawn inside of him.

#5 Statesman: Ran a big 91 Beyer in his first start of the year, but has since dropped off in form. If the Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey can get him back on track, he can certainly make an impact.

#7 Freedom Principle: Does not quite possess the figures to make him a threat.

#8 Union Fleet: Another who is a bit outclassed when it comes to figures.

#9 Break Out: Ships in from Hawthorne, where he was an impressive six-length winner in his most recent start. Most of his prior form has been on turf, but he is sporting back-to-back wins on dirt, and with a little improvement he could be in for a minor placing.

Bacio received an extremely strong 120+ Timeform rating for his victory at Royal Ascot, putting his effort slightly above Mission Central’s win in the G1 King Charles III over the same trip on Tuesday.

See the accompanying screenshot for further analysis.

Timeform analyst Mark Milligan also tweeted right after the race: “You’d like to think Bacio will be campaigned with the Nunthorpe in mind now. Looks an ideal type for that race and his Timeform rating today will be at least equal to, if not higher, than Mission Central’s 5f Group 1 win earlier in the week.”

A lot to unpack Batt with all these posts and news. I’ll answer all of them but let’s start with this one.
Umm, she just made an Into Mischief colt out of a G-1 mare look like an afterthought. Now I’m not saying anything except if someone said if you could have one, which one , and based off that , I would say , I’ll take the filly and you can choose first next time.
We all know morning wins aren’t worth crap but she’s the kind of horse that makes a trainer get it of bed at 4:30 AM with a bounce in their step.

                  That was sweeeet !

Sorry to hear that Batt but in all sports, injuries will occur. And while sesamoids are about as bad a bone as there is, due to the importance of that area, a piece off the top is about the best percentage chance of overcoming. A crack at the base would be instant retirement in all probability.
Those sesamoids do a ton of work . They pretty much control the weight and angle of the pastern which for lay people helps allow for that 45% angle from ankle to foot. The suspension is in there (suspensory) but without the sesamoids, there is no support. Kind of like supporting a bridge. We all know what happens if those supports are compromised.

So, the surgery will occur and we just wait and see. In the long run, the horse will be fine and almost assuredly 100% sound after recuperation. The question will be, can she build back up and retain that soundness? If so, she can run again but hopefully on a fast surface and not slop or mud. ( Too much suction and pull on the lower extremity). But if not, a sound broodmare and hopefully 20 years of being a mom.

Let's hope for the best !

Yes JBEX. Maggie's dad. We were both really young and he started a couple years after me I think. Always got along well and we found ourselves at parties or swimming pools on dark days. Played hoops together, football, you name it. He and his wife are just super people. Most importantly, I never saw a trainer do more with less in all my years there. He was a top 5 Md. trainer in my book with limited opportunities. I always said after I left, with NO disrespect meant, that I could count on one hand the number of people I would have wanted to train for me. Howard was one of those names. Sure hope he can get through this.
                                            Thoughts and prayers my friend.

Most of his prior form has been on turf, but he is sporting back-to-back wins on dirt, and with a little improvement he could be in for a minor placin
