Pyro, has never run poorly on dirt, but finished 10th in his final Derby prep on Keeneland's synthetic surface.

Pyro was entered in this race as a prep he didn't need to win this race or even run particularly well, this was a workout with race conditions the connections have much bigger plans for this horse

some people think if a horse that regularly runs on dirt and runs on synthetic before going back to dirt that it helps build stamina.

I would tend to agree with this statement. However I also think it can dull the speed in the process. The synthetic tracks are tricky. Some horses just do not like it. If you think this is the case for Pyro you are getting a better price in the derby because of the dull effort at Keeneland. Pyro isn't a speed type to begin with. Look at the replay of the bluegrass. Pyro had his ears pinned back entering the far turn. Thats the sign of a horse that is not happy. I'm throwing out that race in my Handicapping of the derby for the most part.
