I am somewhat proud to finish 7th since I was testing out some brand new NBA angles I am working on. But no money is no money.

Congrats to those in the money, especially SportsLockPicks who came out of nowhere and zoomed by the whole field with +13.88 units on the final day.

I probably came off as a whiny baby in my rants on the NBA contest board. That's fair. But I still think I have a point.

Based on how the rules for the contest were set up, it was pretty obvious there was supposed to be strategy involved. Forty-five minimum picks, 60 maximum, with five optional best bets means that it wasn't just a "everyone has the same number of picks and flat units whoever has the most at the end wins," you had to be aware of the people immediately behind you. In my opinion it was obvious part of the strategy consisted of not having to make picks towards the end of the month if you're in first, to make the people behind you pick carefully and pass you.

But deciding to allow people to join as late as they wanted with no penalty (entry fee) blew up all those rules. Effectively, the person in first could never employ a strategy because he would have to assume that one of the endless number of people joining late and trying to luck into a paying spot would pass him. So the correct thing to do would be use all picks and best bets, thereby eliminating what I thought was somewhat the intent of the contest. Instead, the contest ended up having conflicting rules and allowing someone to win based on mostly luck, versus skill.

I would like a month long handicapping contest to be a month long handicapping contest, not whoever can pick all the games in the last week and get luckiest.

            /end rant

If anyone is going to reply to my post please actually read it and reply seriously. I took the time to think it out and present and post that lays out my opinions of how certain rules of the contest contradict themselves. The 3,000 point weekend contests are for high-variance fun. The money, month-long contests are for a month and have those rules for a reason. If you feel I'm wrong please say why instead of just attacking me as I explained myself. Thanks.

thanks for the consolation points! Congrats winners.

If you're the best, it won't matter who gets lucky late.

The only problem is crammers who can see your picks. But I think it was a free contest, so that doesn't make it a no play.

I agree with you, however to say it's "more luck than skill" I think seriously takes away from what he accomplished. Even if it's pure luck, a run like that deserves to win. While it takes away from your starting day strategy, nothing stopped you from joining 3 days before the contest closed and rattling off wins. The reason you didn't do it is because it's incredibly unlikely, and you stand a better chance choosing your spots. It does SBR absolutely no good to limit the number of people who can join, and you should appreciate that and let it go for that reason. Congratulations on your finish though.
