#9503 Keys: Lightning vs. Stars, Game 3 of Stanley Cup Final
Tampa Bay seeks physicality, Dallas eyes discipline in bid to take series lead
by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer
The Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars each will try to take a step toward winning the Stanley Cup when they play Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday.
The Lightning evened the best-of-7 series with a 3-2 win in Game 2 on Monday after the Stars' 4-1 victory in Game 1.
The winner of Game 3 when a best-of-7 Final is tied is 22-7 (75.9 percent) in the series.
"We now are in a best three-out-of-five to win the Stanley Cup," Dallas coach Rick Bowness said.
The Stars are 6-2-0 following a loss this postseason, including 5-1 when goalie Anton Khudobin starts. Khudobin is expected to make his 10th straight start.
The Lightning have not won back-to-back games since Games 1 and 2 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New York Islanders, going 3-3 in their past six postseason games.
Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos could make his postseason debut. The forward, who hasn't played since Feb. 25, sustained a lower-body injury before the Lightning returned in July for training camp in advance of the postseason.
"There's a lot of things that are going to have to go into this beforehand, but he's getting closer," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said.
Here are 3 keys to Game 3:
1. Hit and be hit
There have been 207 hits in Games 1 and 2, with the Lightning holding a 107-100 advantage.
The series figures to remain physical, so the first team to give an inch in this area could find itself getting knocked off the puck enough to lead to chances the other way.
"It's been physical and guys are doing everything they can to win," Tampa Bay forward Tyler Johnson said Wednesday. "Dallas is a bigger team, strong, and they play good defensively, structured. We do too. When you get two teams like that, it's going to be a hard-fought battle. Both teams, going this far, you're so close yet you're still far away and you're literally doing everything right now. We've had some good games so far and we're just trying to keep that compete up."
2. Stars maintaining discipline
Each team has been on the penalty kill seven times, but it's Dallas that needs to be more wary about the penalties it takes and when it takes them because the Tampa Bay power play clicked in Game 2, going 2-for-4 after it was 0-for-14 in its previous four games.
The Stars were shorthanded three times in the first period of Game 2, including two penalties in a span of 2:13. The Lightning scored on each power play.
Dallas was shorthanded three times in the third period of Game 1 protecting a two-goal lead. The Stars killed all three penalties.
"I didn't like the [undisciplined] penalties we took (in Game 2)," Bowness said. "Maybe you take one of those per period. What we've done the last two games is taken three in a period, one after another after another, and that just kills our team. And clearly that power play is going to score if you keep giving them undisciplined opportunities."
3. Start on time
The team that has scored first has won each game, partly because the goal was part of a strong first period.
The Lightning were up 3-0 and outshot the Stars 14-6 in the first period of Game 2. Game 1 was tied 1-1 after the first period, but Dallas was controlling the game defensively and led to a game-changing second period on the way to taking a 3-1 lead.

#960Pavelski breaks record for postseason goals scored by U.S.-born player
Gets one for Stars in Game 5 win against Lightning in Cup Final, passes Mullen with 61
Joe Pavelski set the record for most goals scored in the NHL postseason by a United States-born player with one for the Dallas Stars in a 3-2 double-overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday.
Pavelski, a Wisconsin native, has scored 13 goals this postseason to give him 61 in his NHL career. Mullen, a New York native, scored 60, and Mike Modano, from Michigan, scored 58.
"It's fun to be up there with those guys, and we'll try to keep going," Pavelski said. "We'll look at it another day, some other time, I'm not too worried about it right now. We're trying to get that trophy."

#966New York Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist expected to part ways after 15 seasons, per report
Lundqvist will depart as the franchise leader in wins, shutouts and postseason victories
It feels strange to say, but Henrik Lundqvist's time with the New York Rangers is nearing its final hours.
The Rangers will buy out the contract of Lundqvist on Wednesday, parting ways with the veteran goalie who has largely been the face of the franchise since he entered the league in 2005, Rick Carpiniello of The Athletic reports. Lundqvist, 38, had one year remaining on the seven-year, $59.5 million ($8.5 million AAV) deal he signed with the team in 2013.
With the buyout, Lundqvist will become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. If he chooses to continue playing, it's strongly believed he'll look to join a contending team as he chases a Stanley Cup ring.
The buyout comes as the Rangers continue building with the big picture in mind. This past season, the club saw the emergence of young Russian netminder Igor Shesterkin, who appears to be the team's future in net. With Lundqvist, Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev all proving to be capable and worthy of a roster spot, the Rangers found themselves with a logjam in the crease.
Considering Lundqvist's age and cap hit, it's not entirely shocking that the veteran is the odd man out. But it does mark the end of a pretty remarkable era in New York.
After being drafted in the seventh round in 2000, Hank became a franchise icon, establishing new club records with 459 victories (sixth-most in NHL history), 64 shutouts and 61 postseason wins. In 887 career games played, Lunqdvist boasts a 2.43 GAA and a .918 save percentage.
He won a Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender in 2011-2012 and was named a finalist four additional times.
Lundqvist failed to capture a Stanley Cup win in his 15 seasons with the Rangers but not due to lack of effort or performance between the pipes. He led the team to 11 playoff berths in his first 12 seasons, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014, where New York lost to the Los Angeles Kings.
Lundqvist's career postseason numbers are impressive -- 130 games played, a 2.30 goals against average with a .921 save percentage. Those numbers become a lot more impressive with the context that a lot of his playoff teams over the years were weak defensively.
He has also been fiercely loyal to the Rangers over the years. As the team publicly announced their intention to rebuild in 2018, the club asked Lundqvist whether he wanted to be traded to a team that would give him a better chance at competing for a Stanley Cup. Lundqvist declined, instead opting to stay with the Rangers through that rebuilding effort.
Now, he'll have to decide whether he wants to retire having only donned one jersey over the entirety of his NHL career, or whether he wants to join another franchise on a short-term, relatively short-money deal for a chance to chase a Cup.
Either way, Lundqvist's place in Rangers history is secure, and his No. 30 jersey will hang in the rafters at Madison Square Garden sooner rather than later.Comment -

#978Dubnyk traded to Sharks by Wild
Teams also exchange draft picks; goalie has one season left on six-year contract
NHL.com @NHLdotcom
Devan Dubnyk and a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft were traded to the San Jose Sharks by the Minnesota Wild on Monday for a fifth-round pick in 2022.
Dubnyk was 12-15-2 with a 3.35 goals-against average and .890 save percentage in 30 games (28 starts) this season. The 34-year-old missed time in November and December when his wife, Jenn, was dealing with a medical situation, and he lost his job as Minnesota's No. 1 goalie toward the end of the season to Alex Stalock, who started all four games for the Wild in their loss to the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers.
"Devan has been one of the League's top goaltenders for many years and after playing so many years in the Western Conference, is someone our hockey staff is very familiar with," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "As we head into what will surely be a unique season, his acquisition gives us a high-quality and experienced tandem of netminders."
Dubnyk has one season remaining on a six-year, $26 million contract ($4.33 million average annual value) he signed with Minnesota on July 4, 2015.
[RELATED: 2019-20 NHL Trade Tracker]
San Jose, which missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2015, has struggled with its goaltending the past two seasons.
Martin Jones was 17-21-2 with a 3.00 GAA and .896 save percentage in 41 games (40 starts) this season. Aaron Dell, who can become an unrestricted free agent Oct. 9, was 12-15-3 with a 3.01 GAA and .907 save percentage. In 2018-19, Jones had a 2.94 GAA and .896 save percentage, and Dell had a 3.17 GAA and .886 save percentage.
Selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round (No. 14) of the 2004 NHL Draft, Dubnyk is 247-195-52 with a 2.58 GAA, a .915 save percentage and 32 shutouts in 520 regular-season games with the Wild, Arizona Coyotes, Nashville Predators and Oilers. He is 8-18 with a 2.72 GAA and .904 save percentage in 26 NHL playoff games.
Minnesota (35-27-7, .558 points percentage) was the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference and won Game 1 of its best-of-5 Qualifier series before losing three straight to Vancouver. General manager Bill Guerin said Aug. 10 the Wild were not committed to Dubnyk or Stalock next season.
"No, the hierarchy's not clear," Guerin said. "Whoever's playing well is going to play. I was disappointed in the goaltending this year. Al had a tremendous year and Devan had an off year, and it needs to be better. That's just the way it is. And if I told you anything different, I'd be lying to you. It was not a strong point for us.
"Can those two turn it around for you next year? No, I can't say that. If we don't get the feeling that we're going to be better, then we're going to improve it."
The Wild have made four trades since losing in the Qualifiers. They traded a conditional pick in the 2021 NHL Draft to the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Nick Bjugstad on Sept. 11. Six days later, center Eric Staal was traded to the Buffalo Sabres for forward Marcus Johansson.
Forward Ryan Donato was traded to San Jose on Monday for a third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, which the Sharks acquired from the Penguins for forward Patrick Marleau on Feb. 24.

#979Rather than focusing on his first NHL draft as a general manager, Kevyn Adams was busy re-assuring the Buffalo Sabres fanbase he has no intention of trading captain Jack Eichel.
''I'm hoping I'm clarifying it for you, but that to me is an easy question, because we have no intention of doing that,'' Adams said during the half-hour pre-draft session with reporters on Monday. ''I have zero concern on Jack wanting to be here. I've had great conversations with him, his representatives. I'm not really sure where that's coming from.''[quote=jjgold;5683305]I win again like usual
