Got to love pennant race baseball. The stretch drive is always fun I can't wait to see how these division battles shake out and who makes the playoffs.

Nice start for Lux. The kid looked very poised for a 21 year old, MLB is definitely not too big for him.

Encarnacion (wrist) returns to Yankees' lineup

New York Yankees slugger Edwin Encarnacion has returned to the lineup after missing a month with a broken wrist.
Encarnacion will bat fifth in the lineup and serve as the Yankees' designated hitter Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers.
The 36-year-old Encarnacion told reporters that he has no lingering pain in his right wrist and that he's happy to be back with the Yankees. The three-time All-Star missed 30 games after suffering the injury Aug. 3 against the Boston Red Sox.
Encarnacion is batting .240 with 30 home runs and 76 RBIs this season. He is tied for 11th in the American League in homers despite playing in just 101 games this season.

Astros center fielder George Springer was carted of the field in tonight’s game following a collision with the center-field wall, and manager A.J. Hinch said after tonight’s game that Springer is being evaluated for a head injury and will travel back to Houston with the club tonight (Twitter link, with video, via MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart). For the time being, the Astros are listing Springer as day-to-day, but he’s still slated to undergo a series of additional tests.
Springer made an outstanding grab of a deep drive to center field off the bat of Ryan Braun, but fell to the ground hard and appeared to strike his head against the base of the wall at Miller Park (video link). Hinch and several teammates were with Springer as he lay on the warning track for a few minutes until the cart arrived to help him off the field. Right fielder Josh Reddick said after the game that Springer never lost consciousness and seemed alert following the collision (video link via McTaggart).
First place in the AL West is a veritable certainty for the Astros at this point, given their 10-game lead over second-place Oakland, but a concussion or any other head injury of note for Springer would be of significant concern with postseason play set to begin in roughly a month. The 29-year-old Springer has been among the league’s most productive hitters, posting a .297/.389/.573 batting line with 30 homers, 19 doubles and three triples despite missing nearly a month with a hamstring injury earlier in the season.
Houston’s lineup went through a spell where it was without several key players due to injury, but the Astros were nearly at full strength entering play tonight. Carlos Correa remains sidelined by a back injury but hit off a tee earlier today (Twitter link via the Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome). He’s expected to return in the relatively near future, but Springer’s now-uncertain status gives the Houston organization and its fans another key injury situation to monitor.

Unbelieveable game between New York Mets and Washington Nationals. I had the Nats and thought I was dead when they were down 6 going into the 9th but somehow they found a way to score 7 in the bottom of the 9th to win. That must've been a stomach punch for Mets backers...

Nats' Barrett back in bigs for 1st time since '15

WASHINGTON -- Newly minted Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez made a point of watching rehabbing reliever Aaron Barrett throw a bullpen session early in spring training in 2018 and was amazed at how well the right-hander was throwing.
After all, Barrett already had missed two full seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015 and fracturing his arm in 2016.
"He told me, 'I'm going to pitch in the big leagues again," Martinez recalled. "I said, 'Keep working, and I'll see you soon.'"
Barrett got back to the majors Wednesday when Washington purchased his contract from Double-A Harrisburg. He received hugs from longtime teammates as they trickled into the clubhouse before a matinee against the New York Mets.
"I said it all along: When I make it back, it's going to be a hell of a comeback story," Barrett said. "I'm pretty overwhelmed that I'm here, to be honest with you. It's crazy."

The Giants announced today that they have selected the contract of outfielder Jaylin Davis. He’ll take the 40-man roster spot of reliever Reyes Moronta, who was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Davis came to the San Francisco organization as part of the deadline deal that sent reliever Sam Dyson to the Twins. The former 25th-rounder was putting up big numbers in the upper minors at the time of the swap but was obviously deemed expendable by the Minnesota organization.
Since changing jerseys, Davis has continued to rake. Over the course of the year, he has posted well-above-average numbers at each stop: a 147 wRC+ at Double-A, 175 wRC+ in the International League, and 160 wRC+ in the Pacific Coast League.
It remains to be seen whether Davis will be able to apply his power consistently enough at the major-league level. But it’ll certainly be fun to see whether he can do so. We’ve seen other under-the-radar slugger types carry forward big upper-minors production into the bigs. If that’s the case for Davis, the Giants could have a steal. He’d have required a 40-man spot in advance of this winter’s Rule 5 draft regardless of today’s move, so there was little reason not to give him his first look now.

Thinking maybe they would like to see Bochy get 2000 wins so a little to play for. I think he is either 6 or 7 away.

Reds' Lorenzen has a game not seen since Ruth

CINCINNATI -- With a homer, a win and an appearance in the outfield, Michael Lorenzen pulled off a feat last accomplished by the Babe. Cincinnati's versatile reliever also blocked the Phillies from gaining ground in the playoff chase.
That last part stung the most for Philadelphia.
Lorenzen hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning Wednesday night as the Reds pulled away to an 8-5 victory. He got his first win and first homer of the season. He also finished the game playing center field.
The most recent player to get a victory, hit a homer and play outfield in the same game was Babe Ruth for the Yankees on June 13, 1921, according to Elias research.

The Red Sox’ faint Wild Card hopes may have taken another hit, as manager Alex Cora told reporters today that David Price won’t make his scheduled start against the Yankees this weekend after experiencing tightness in his ailing wrist during his most recent bullpen session (Twitter links via the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier). The outlook on infielder Michael Chavis is worse, it seems, as a setback in his rehab from an oblique strain has placed the remainder of the season in jeopardy for the 24-year-old rookie.
Price is currently able to throw fastballs but is having difficulty throwing his cutter and changeup. Cora didn’t offer a specific return date on the lefty, but his scratch will now relegate the Red Sox to a pair of bullpen games against the Yankees in their four-game series this weekend. Recently signed righty Jhoulys Chacin is a candidate to start tomorrow’s game in place of Price, but he’d apparently function as more of an opener than a traditional starter; Chacin hasn’t pitched in a big league game since July 24 and hasn’t pitched more than three innings in an appearance since July 14.
Price only just returned from a month-long absence that stemmed from a cyst in his wrist. The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey tweets that the left-hander underwent a platelet-rich plasma injection while on the injured list that was intended to help break up the cyst. Now, however, the ongoing discomfort in the area makes offseason surgery to remove the cyst a likelier outcome.
Chavis, meanwhile, has been out since Aug. 11 with the oblique injury that now threatens to put an to his rookie campaign. Long one of the organization’s top prospects, Chavis burst onto the scene in late April and turned in an OPS north of .900 through his first month-plus in the big leagues. His offensive contributions have slowly waned in recent months, though, and Chavis was mired in an ugly 5-for-32 slump at the time of his IL placement. In all, he’s given the Sox a respectable .254/.322/.444 line through 382 trips to the plate, clubbing 18 home runs, 10 doubles and a triple along the way.
Even with Chavis now unlikely to return in 2019, Cora noted that there’s still no thought to adding top infield prospect Bobby Dalbec to the Major League roster. Dalbec, also 24, hit .234/.371/.454 with 20 home runs in a very pitcher-friendly setting in Double-A — that slash line was 43 percent better than league average, per wRC+ — before graduating to Triple-A and hitting .257/.301/.478 (91 wRC+) in 123 plate appearances there.
