Alonso 1st rookie to set team HR mark since '38

NEW YORK -- Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, the odds-on favorite to win National League Rookie of the Year, reached another milestone Tuesday night, setting the single-season franchise record by hitting his 42nd home run.
Alonso, 24, took an outside fastball from Chicago Cubs starter Yu Darvish deep to right field to lead off the fourth inning. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Alonso is the first rookie to set the franchise mark for his team since Johnny Rizzo did it for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1938.
"As soon as that ball came off my bat, I knew right away," Alonso said after the game. "I mean it's become a dream come true so far this year and I just feel really blessed."

Yadi Molina is carrying my offense in week 1 of the Playoffs in my money h2h points league. He is simply rock solid and hitting everything this week. I had to pick him up in the Free agent bidding period last week because Brian McCann is on the IL and I needed a Catcher so I took Molina who picked a good time to go on a hot streak.

With Khris Davis headed to the paternity list for the next three days, the Athletics are set to select the contract of infield prospect Sheldon Neuse, reports Martin Gallegos of MLB.com (via Twitter). It’ll be the first call to the big leagues for the 2016 second-rounder, who is widely considered to be among the organization’s top 10 prospects. Oakland will need to make a 40-man roster move to create room for Neuse’s promotion.
Neuse, 24, was originally drafted by the Nationals, who traded him to Oakland alongside Blake Treinen and Jesus Luzardo in the 2017 deadline deal that netted them Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson. He’s had a strong season in Triple-A Las Vegas, hitting .317/.389/.550 with 27 home runs, 31 doubles, two triples and three steals in 550 plate appearances. While he struggled to make contact in his first run at Triple-A in 2018, Neuse has slashed his strikeout rate and upped his walk rate in 2019. He currently ranks eighth among Oakland farmhands according to both MLB.com and Baseball America, while Fangraphs tabs him ninth in the organization.
Third base is Neuse’s natural position, and that’s currently a rather occupied position in Oakland thanks to Matt Chapman. As such, he’s spent some time playing second base, shortstop and left field this season in an effort to build his versatility and carve out a path to a role on the big league roster. A two-way star in college at Oklahoma, there’s been some previous speculation about utilizing Neuse as a two-way player, but he’s yet to throw a pitch in a game setting since being drafted. As things currently stand, a utility role looks like the best path to playing time for him in the Oakland organization.
As a 2016 draftee who was selected out of college, Neuse would’ve required protection from the Rule 5 Draft this winter anyhow. That would’ve made him a candidate for a September call-up when rosters expand on Sunday, but he’ll get his first crack at the big leagues a few days earlier.

Yeah I put in a bid for Kurt Suzuki he's the best of a very barren waiver wire. It's a weekly lineup league so I think I'll probably play Molina as long as he's healthy and I'm still in the playoffs but I agree with you I need a backup just in case he goes cold or gets hurt...

Twins break record for home runs on the road

CHICAGO -- The Minnesota Twins broke a major league record for most home runs on the road, getting back-to-back homers in the third inning Thursday for 140.
Jake Cave led off the third with a solo shot off Chicago White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease to give the AL Central leaders the record. That surpassed the 138 set by the San Francisco Giants in 2001.
C.J. Cron followed with a drive to center to give Minnesota 140 long balls on the road.
The Twins have a major league-leading 260 home runs overall this season.

The Cubs have been without Willson Contreras for three-plus weeks after he suffered a right hamstring strain, but the star catcher is closing in on a return. Contreras will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Friday, and if all goes well in the minors, he could rejoin the Cubs within a week, manager Joe Maddon told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune and other reporters.
Contreras went down during the Cubs’ game Aug. 3, which was especially unfortunate just a few days after the July 31 trade deadline passed. With Contreras and Victor Caratini healthy at the deadline, the Cubs decided veteran Martin Maldonado was inessential, as they sent him to the Astros for utilityman Tony Kemp. Of course, the Cubs only acquired Maldonado from the Royals in mid-July because Contreras landed on the IL with a different injury – a right foot strain.
Even with the deadline out of the way and Maldonado out of the picture, Chicago was able to pull in an experienced catcher earlier this month. The team signed former standout Jonathan Lucroy on Aug. 7, which came shortly after the Angels released him. Lucroy’s multiyear decline has continued as a Cub, though he has at least given the team OK offensive production for a backup. The 33-year-old entered Thursday with a .276/.344/.345 line in 29 plate appearances since he joined the Cubs.
Unlike Lucroy, Caratini has been quite valuable this season, which has made the blow of losing Contreras easier to absorb. Caratini swatted a pair of home runs in the Cubs’ win over the Mets on Thursday, giving him nine HRs and a robust .274/.363/.480 line across 201 trips to the plate. Not only that, but Caratini has graded as one of Baseball Prospectus’ top defensive catchers this year.
When the Cubs’ top two catchers are healthy, few teams are in better shape behind the plate. Injuries aside, Contreras has enjoyed a fourth straight highly productive campaign – at least with the bat – as he has posted a .275/.365/.525 slash and 19 homers in 340 PA. The big-armed Contreras’ overall defensive numbers pale in comparison to Caratini’s, but the former is nonetheless among Chicago’s most valuable players and a key reason why it’s in playoff position at the moment.
The Cubs, who are 2 1/2 games up on a wild-card spot, will be thrilled to welcome back Contreras as they continue attempting to chase down the Cardinals for an NL Central crown. While the Redbirds are a game and a half ahead, the two teams still have to square off seven times in late September, when Contreras should again be a prominent part of the Cubs’ lineup.

Yankees place Urshela on IL, activate 1B Voit

The New York Yankees activated first baseman Luke Voit while placing third baseman Gio Urshela on the 10-day injured list with a left groin injury, the team announced Friday.
Urshela left in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game against the Seattle Mariners with left groin tightness.
The move, which is retroactive to Thursday, hurts Urshela's chances to win the AL batting title.
He is among the league leaders with a .331 average but has only 414 plate appearances. He would need 502 to qualify for the batting title.
Yankees teammate DJ LeMahieu currently leads the AL with a .335 average.
