CLE - Browns fire HC Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer

    Source: ESPN

The Cleveland Browns have fired coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer following a 3-13 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

And the churn in Cleveland continues. "We want to get the right person,'' owner Jimmy Haslam said. "I don't know if it's going to take two weeks or two months.''

SF - 49ers fire HC Jim Tomsula

    Source: ESPN.com

The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Jim Tomsula after one season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

CEO Jed York said all the right things. "Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years," CEO Jed York said in a statement. "We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future." But bottom line is this team, not unlike Cleveland seems to be floundering.

NYG - Quiet finale for WR Odell Beckham Jr.

    Source: The Associated Press

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. finished with five catches for 54 yards in a 35-30 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beckham had an ignoble finish to what was otherwise a smashing followup to one of the greatest rookie seasons ever. He'll be a top 3-5 pick next season.

NYG - RB Rashad Jennings goes out on high note

    Source: The Associated Press

New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings had 27 carries for 170 yards and a touchdown in a 35-30 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jennings wasn't leaned on as a feature back until late in the season, but he produced well enough for the Giants to consider keeping him next season for a modest price.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden reaches 1,000 yards

    Source: The Associated Press

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden had 12 carries for 92 yards and five catches for 53 yards in a 34-23 loss to the Washington Redskins in Week 17, reaching 1,000 yards rushing for the second time in his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden could have had a bigger game if he didn't fumble through the end zone. He'll be prominent in the Cowboys backfield mix again next year.

DAL - QB Kellen Moore throws for 435

    Source: The Associated Press

Dallas Cowboys QB Kellen Moore completed 33 of 48 passes for 435 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 24-16 loss to the Washington Redskins in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore gave teams in the market for a backup something to think about entering the 2016 offseason. He didn't have the benefit of Dez Bryant either.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins stellar in light duty

    Source: The Associated Press

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 12 of 15 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns before being lifted in the second quarter in a 34-23 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cousins was on point once again and Washington should rely on his arm in the wild card game whether they face Seattle or Green Bay.

BAL - TE Maxx Williams closes year strong

    Source: The Associated Press

Baltimore Ravens TE Maxx Williams set career highs in catches, targets and yards in a 24-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17, catching six of his 10 targets for 53 yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams was pressed into duty by injuries, but he showed requisite toughness in extended playing time. He'll be a sleeper in drafts this summer.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert scores in return

    Source: The Associated Press

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (concussion) returned from a two-game absence and caught four passes for 51 yards and a touchdown in a 24-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert is a red zone monster no matter who is at quarterback for the Bengals. He'll be very important in the first round game against Pittsburgh.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson makes NFL history

    Source: ESPN

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson became the first player in NFL history to record 4,000 pass yards, 30 pass touchdowns and 500 rush yards in a single season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson was a fantasy dud for the first half of the season, but he was a league-winner in the second half. He'll be among the top 3-5 quarterbacks drafted again this summer.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill runs over Baltimore

    Source: The Associated Press

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill had 16 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown and two catches for 19 yards in a 24-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill will likely be a cornerstone of the Bengals gameplan to shorten the contest and increase their chances of beating the Steelers next week.

DEN - QB Brock Osweiler lifted in second half

    Source: CBS Sports - Television

Denver Broncos QB Brock Osweiler was lifted midway through the third quarter of the Week 17 game against the San Diego Chargers in favor of QB Peyton Manning (foot).

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning was better than Osweiler, but the Broncos quarterback situation is far from ideal. They locked down the #1 seed but will likely see Pittsburgh or Kansas City in the divisional round, and both teams beat them this season.

NO - QB Drew Brees finishes strong

Source: The Associated Press - Charles Odum

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees finished 32 of 42 for 323 yards and one touchdown in a 20-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brees' status seemed shaky at times this year, but he finished strong. Nothing is certain, but the smart money seems to be on keeping a franchise icon like Brees in New Orleans until he retires.

IND - TE Coby Fleener finishes strong

Source: The Associated Press - Michael Marot

Indianapolis Colts TE Coby Fleener caught seven passes for 88 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown, in a 30-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fleener will be a free agent next year, and he gave both the Colts and potential suitors a high note to think about.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins finishes season strong

    Source: The Associated Press

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins caught 11 passes for 136 yards against the New York Jets in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins overcame injuries, a run-first offense, and a green quarterback to be a strong WR1 down the stretch. He'll be a third or fourth-round pick in drafts next summer.

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor has decent outing

    Source: The Associated Press

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor went 18-for-28 for 182 yards against the New York Jets in Week 17. He also rushed for 51 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries during the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor outplayed Ryan Fitzpatrick to deny the Jets a postseason berth. He'll be part of a quarterback competition this summer, and likely be the favorite.

IND - RB Frank Gore rushes for 76 yards

Source: The Associated Press - Michael Marot

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore had 19 carries for 76 yards and no touchdowns in a 30-24 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Jan. 3.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore was stronger than his numbers at the beginning of the year and as weak as his numbers late in the year, although he finished with a kick. Gore was dragged down by the Colts offense but mostly defied his age this year. Next year it will be harder to project him to do that.

NYJ - WR Brandon Marshall surpasses 100-yard mark

    Source: The Associated Press

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall caught eight passes for 126 yards and one touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall has had one of the best years of his career on his fourth and likely last team. He will not be underestimated in 2016 drafts the way he was in 2015.

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has inconsistent outing

    Source: The Associated Press

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick went 16-for-37 for 181 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17. Fitzpatrick threw 31 touchdown passes this season, which set a franchise record.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzpatrick was a dud with the Jets season on the line. He still should command a good salary on the open market and likely enter next season as the team's starter. His career has been revived with Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Chan Gailey on his side.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown continues terrific play

    Source: The Associated Press

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown caught 13 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown had yet another hall of fame regular season and flirted with the single season reception record. He'll be the #1 pick in a lot of drafts next year.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger throws three TDs

    Source: The Associated Press

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger went 24-for-36 for 349 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Roethlisberger bounced back after a disastrous Week 16 to help the Steelers make it to the playoffs and face the Bengals next week. Even though it was not assured the Steelers would make the postseason until after they finished their final game, they are a threat to run the table in the AFC.

HOU - WR Nate Washington injures hip

    Source: NFL.com

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington (hip) suffered a hip injury during the team's Week 17 game and was not able to return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans might not have much help for DeAndre Hopkins next week.

I would say for sure he is done .

I wonder if he can survive the offseason without any scandals.

About the same odds of JJ's bankroll going bust in the same time period.

He is probably done in the NFL. Can't see him making any kind of comeback. Teams don't want to deal with him.

                Tuesday Update:

NYG - Tom Coughlin steps down

                Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating a previous report, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin decided to step down before the Giants asked if he wanted to stay on as head coach, according to a source. Coughlin is open to listening to offers from other teams, however.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is being framed as a resignation and not as a retirement. Coughlin did not use the word "retire" in his statements and may be open to offers, and there may be a team who feels his guidance could put them over the top.

IND - Indianapolis extends Chuck Pagano

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Dan Wetzel

The Indianapolis Colts signed head coach Chuck Pagano to a contract extension Monday, Jan. 4. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This seems like the right thing to do. We're just a little surprised the Colts ownership did the right thing.

PIT - No serious damage for RB DeAngelo Williams

                Source: ESPN - Britt McHenry

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams' (ankle) MRI did not show any serious structural damage or any fractures in his ankle, according to sources.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Steelers here. Williams is considered day-to-day at this point. Later in the week, we'll know if Williams is going to be available for the game against the Bengals on Wild Card Weekend.

CIN - QB Andy Dalton not expected to play

                Source: NFL Network

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (finger) is not expected to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's bad news for the Bengals. With A.J. McCarron in at quarterback, the Steelers defense should be able to take advantage. Dalton might be able to play in the Divisional Round if the Bengals advance.

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch working out

                Source: The Associated Press

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (abdomen) was working out at the team's facility Monday, Jan. 4, according to head coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks will not return to practice until Wednesday, Jan. 6.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch could be back for this upcoming game against the Vikings. Getting him back in action will be a boost for the offense. Lynch should be able to handle a full workload upon his return. Stay tuned and monitor his practice status during the week.

NE - QB Tom Brady has MRI on ankle

                Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating an earlier report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) had an MRI on his ankle, Monday, Jan. 4, which revealed a sprain but no breaks.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You hear that sound? That's a collective sigh of relief from Patriots fans to know the ankle isn't broken. Although several reports are that he's dealing with a high ankle sprain. The Patriots are Super Bowl contenders with Brady in the lineup, but they'd be hard pressed to win a game if they were without him in the postseason. Fortunately, he's got until January 16 to get ready.

SD - RB Danny Woodhead leads RBs in receiving

                Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead led all running backs in targets (107), receptions (81), receiving yards (756) and receiving touchdowns (6) this season.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Woodhead finished the year as the 3rd-highest scoring RB in PPR leagues. Many changes are coming in 2016 for the Chargers, but Woodhead should continue to be featured in the offense as a pass-catching and change-of-pace back.

TB - RB Doug Martin completes bounce-back year

                Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin finished the 2015 season with 1,673 total yards and seven total touchdowns.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just in time for a new contract! Martin is set to hit free agency in 2016, but we can't imagine the Bucs letting him go. After two down seasons, Martin again showed why he's one of the best running backs in the league. We'll see if the two sides can come to an agreement as the Bucs will have a small window to sign Martin before free agency begins in 2016.

                SD - Frank Reich fired

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich was fired Monday, Jan. 4.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers offense was 9th in total yards, but they were only 26th in scoring. Ravaged by injuries this year, the Chargers and QB Philip Rivers made the most of it. We should see HC Mike McCoy take on a larger role with the offense in 2016.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore signed a three-year deal with the Colts last year, and he's only got a $4 million cap number this season. He should be fine for offseason workouts.

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) has a chance to play in the Wild Card round of the playoffs this weekend, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Shorts back would be huge for the Texans offense. While DeAndre Hopkins can stretch the field, Shorts can work the underneath routes to get open. We'll know more about his playing status later in the week.

                MIA - Mike Smith interviewing

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith is meeting with the Miami Dolphins Monday, Jan. 4, in regards to their vacant head coach position.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins are interviewing a ton of different coaches for their vacated position. We don't think Smith is a front-runner in this search.

NYG - Jerry Reese staying in NY

Source: NFL Network - Aditi Kinkhabwala

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese will be retained despite head coach Tom Coughlin stepping down, according to a source.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reese has had plenty of success building the Giants through the draft, but 2016 might be a make-or-break season for him. We'll see how this plays out as the Giants keep him around for at least one more season. We'll see how things work out in their head coaching search now that Tom Coughlin has "stepped down".

SD - RB Melvin Gordon to have surgery

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (knee) is scheduled to have surgery on his torn knee cartilage. He is expected to make a full recovery, according to head coach Mike McCoy.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This surgery sounds minor, but it's still knee surgery for a young back pegged as the franchise runner for the team. Gordon should be ready for the offseason program, but the team may limit him until training camp. He had a disappointing rookie season with 641 yards on 3.5 yards per carry. SF - Trent Baalke to remain GM for 49ers

                Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke will remain with the team.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baalke won a power struggle with former head coach Jim Harbaugh, and he's going to try to get the team back on track after the disastrous Jim Tomsula one-year era. He needs to do a better job of finding quality talent as the 49ers have multiple holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

DEN - CB Chris Harris expects to be fine

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) said he expects to be ready for the Divisional Round playoff game even though he suffered a bruised left shoulder during the team's Week 17 game.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harris told reporters after the game that he played without feeling in the shoulder for most of the game. If the Broncos play the Steelers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, it will be interesting to see if Harris can at least slow down WR Antonio Brown. These teams played earlier this year, and Brown had 189 yards receiving and two touchdowns...mostly when covered by Harris.

DAL - QB Tony Romo may undergo surgery

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Charean Williams

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) said he will decide this month on whether he will undergo surgery on his broken collarbone. Romo said he is considering all of the options he has available.

Earlier reports indicated that Romo would not have to have surgery. Now, Romo may have a plate inserted to strengthen his thrice broken left collarbone. Either way, he should be ready to go by the time training camp rolls around.

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick hopes to return

                Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said he hopes to re-sign with the Jets this offseason.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets need a QB of the future (unless they think Bryce Petty could be that guy), but bringing back Fitzpatrick only makes sense. He has thrived under OC Chan Gailey in two stops now in the NFL, and he could be a consistent starter while the next QB is groomed behind him.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (abdomen) will have surgery next week to repair a sports hernia.

Hurns was bothered by this issue for the last half of the season. He had a big year in 2015, collecting 64 passes for 1,031 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Look for him to be ready or the offseason program and perhaps put up even better numbers in 2016.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson secures rushing title

                Source: The Associated Press

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (back) ran 19 times for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Green Bay Packers, and he added one reception for just one yard. His production was good enough to secure his third-career NFL rushing title.

                [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson finishes with 1,485 rushing yards this year. After missing most of last year, nobody should be surprised that Peterson came back with a vengeance. We'll see how far he can lead the Vikings in the postseason.

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams (ankle) has a chance, albeit a small one, to play in the AFC Wild Card Game Saturday, Jan. 9, against the Cincinnati Bengals, a team source said Monday, Jan. 4. The team does not intend to sign a veteran running back for the postseason.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's only Wednesday, but we'd be surprised if Williams was able to go on Wild Card Weekend. That is bad news for the Steelers, because it makes their offense one-dimensional. Good for them, that one dimension is perhaps the best in the league. Roethlisberger could have a monster game.

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning is expected to start in the playoffs, in the opinion of The Denver Post's Troy E. Renck. However, head coach Gary Kubiak has shown that he has a short leash.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There is no official word, and there won't be until next week. The team wants to see how Manning's foot responds after he took over in the third quarter of the Chargers game in Week 17 to spark the team. We think Manning should be the starter as the Broncos will make one last run with the future Hall of Famer.

CIN - Cincy planning to use AJ McCarron

                              Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Monday, Jan. 4, that the Bengals would prepare during the week as if QB AJ McCarron would start the wild card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Jan. 9, with QB Andy Dalton's (thumb) status up in the air. McCarron said he'll be more confident this weekend if he's forced to face the Steelers for the second time.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Confidence isn't McCarron's problem, but staying cool under pressure is. McCarron will take chances with the football, and that can pay off for the Bengals since they have elite weapons like WR A.J. Green and TE Tyler Eifert. However, in a game that has 'shootout' written all over it, we'll take Ben Roethlisberger over what McCarron can bring to the table.

                              Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan

Updating a previous report, New York Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo interviewed for the Giants' head coaching vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 5, according to sources.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Promoting McAdoo would make a lot of sense for the Giants. The offense could stay on track with a system they've become used to and can thrive with. McAdoo would then have to focus on getting as much help as possible on the defensive side of the ball.

SD - QB Philip Rivers threw the most in 2015

                              Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers led the league with 661 pass attempts this season -- the most since Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw an all-time record 727 times in 2012. His 661 attempts were also the sixth most all time in one season.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rivers had to throw a lot because the defense would get them in trouble, and they struggled to run the ball. We expect the team to work diligently in order to fix the ground game. That means we could see fewer attempts from Rivers in 2016.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles led all quarterbacks this season with 18 interceptions.

Bortles is an exciting young quarterback, but he's got plenty of flaws in his game. He'll need to take better care of the football if he wants to take that next step in the NFL.

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones led the NFL with 203 targets this season. It was the most targets for a wide receiver in one season since Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson saw 204 targets in 2012.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what happens when the team has few other quality targets to throw to. Jones is a superstar, but the Falcons offense could use some better pass-catchers around him.

The Colts kept head coach Chuck Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson, but changes had to be made. Manusky didn't bring a consistently effective defense to the field, but it wasn't all his fault. The Colts generally have a lack of talent on that side of the ball.

Denver Broncos TE Vernon Davis has put himself in a difficult spot because of crucial drops in recent weeks, and his playing time hasn't been helped by the fact that the Broncos have been running more of an up-tempo offense of late. TEs Owen Daniels and Virgil Green are more comfortable working at a quicker pace.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As the Broncos use more high-tempo offense, Davis should see a smaller role. Coach Gary Kubiak said the team trusts Owen Daniels more in those situations because he knows the offense better. It was exciting when the Broncos added Davis via trade, but the move has yielded few results.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) will put in a limited practice Tuesday, Jan. 5, and remains day-to-day, according to head coach Andy Reid. LB Dee Ford (concussion) remains in the concussion protocol and won't practice Tuesday.

Getting these two pass-rushers back would be key for the Chiefs as they want to advance through the postseason. Up first; the Texans who just lost their starting left tackle Duane Brown to a torn right quad.

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (Achilles') shed his walking boot Monday, Jan. 4, after eight weeks, and he said he has more four more weeks of rest before he can start to move around. 'I won't be ahead of schedule. If anything, to be safe, I'll be behind schedule. With an injury like this, you don't want to be ahead of schedule. That takes away a lot of stuff.'

We're so happy that Smith chose not to retire and he will return for the 2016 season. He'll be eased back into action this offseason, but there's a chance he could be ready to go for the start of training camp.

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White said he wasn't interested in a pay cut to remain with the Falcons. He's due $4.25 million in 2016 and will count $6,043,750 against the salary cap.

There's $3.7 million left in dead money on White's current contract which goes through 2017. If he won't take a pay cut, then perhaps White will be playing elsewhere in 2016.

New York Mets team official Paul DePodesta has been hired by the Cleveland Browns as executive vice president, according to a source. DePodesta was the vice president of player development and scouting for the Mets.

The franchise from Draft Day just hired Jonah Hill from Moneyball. All joking aside, we like this 'outside the box' move for the Browns. DePodesta is not just an 'analytics' guy, reports indicate he also puts a lot of emphasis on scouting and digging deep for quality players. Listen, the Browns need a ton of help...and we're hoping they can (eventually) turn things around for some of the best fans in the NFL.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) had the cast removed from his right thumb, but his status for the wild card game Saturday, Jan. 9, is unknown.

The Pittsburgh Steelers intend to use RBs Fitzgerald Toussaint, Jordan Todman and FB Will Johnson to fill the void in the AFC Wild Card Game against the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday, Jan. 9, if RB DeAngelo Williams (ankle) is not available.

                              [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Those who play fantasy football in the playoffs should not be relying on any of these backs. Toussaint filled in last week after Williams went down, but he could only muster 24 yards on 12 carries. Todman might be the most intriguing because of his speed, but he's been inactive the last four weeks. On the season, Todman only has four carries for 22 yards. Avoid this situation if you can.

TB - Coach Lovie Smith Fired

                                        Source: Buccaneers.com

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that Head Coach Lovie Smith has been relieved of his duties.

Statement from Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer: “After careful consideration, we informed Lovie that we have decided to make a change. I want to thank Lovie for his hard work and dedication to the Buccaneers during his time here. This decision was difficult on a variety of levels. I am disappointed that we were not more successful these past few seasons, but we are committed to doing what is necessary to give our fans the winning team they deserve. As we move forward, General Manager Jason Licht will oversee the process for finding our next head coach.” [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wow. Can't say we were expecting that one. Add Tampa Bay to the list of teams looking for a head coach now. ESPN's Mark Dominik posted on his twitter feed: "With Lovie Smith fired I would expect Dirk Koetter to be named head coach within the week. They still will interview a few other candidates." This would make sense and would be some continuity for QB Jameis Winston. Stay tuned.

NO - Sean Payton staying in New Orleans

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New Orleans head coach Sean Payton will remain with the team in 2016.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With two years left on his deal, it's no surprise the team is keeping Payton around in 2016. After back-to-back seasons of 7-9, we could see Payton in a make-or-break year. The offense should stay the same with Drew Brees running the show at QB, but the defense needs a ton of changes (and a serious upgrade in talent).

DET - WR Calvin Johnson considering retirement?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson spent as much time in the training room as anyone this year, and his ankle injury forced him to miss large chunks of practice time for a second straight season. As a result, Johnson is contemplating his future and has mentioned the subject of retirement to at least one former teammate. Several people that know Johnson said it's not far-fetched. Johnson's production has declined in recent seasons due to injuries. He missed two games with knee and finger injuries in 2013, missed three games and parts of two others last year and missed Week 8 this season with a sprained ankle and played through the injury for much of the second half. He still managed to catch 88 passes for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015 and led the Lions in yards and touchdowns.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to keep an eye on this situation. Without Johnson, it would heavily impact the fantasy value of guys like QB Matthew Stafford and WR Golden Tate. Johnson is scheduled to make $16 million next year and has a cap number of $24.008 million. Detroit could ask him to take a pay cut or outright release him to save $11 million in cap space.

The wild-card matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings Sunday, Jan. 10 is expecting the temperature in Minneapolis to be a high of 1 degree, not counting the 10-15 mph wind chill factor.

Keep this in mind when setting DFS lineups. Both Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater have fared well in cold games in their careers. Wilson is 3-2 with a 66.9 completion percentage while averaging 258.4 passing yards and a 13-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Bridgewater is 6-3 with a 66.5 completion percentage while averaging 191.8 passing yards and a 12-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Many coaches are going to be interested in the Titans because of one player: QB Marcus Mariota. It seems like the Titans have found a keeper at the position, and a McDaniels/Mariota combination could be quite explosive.

                                        Source: ESPNWisconsin.com - Jason Wilde

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers didn't have a quarterback rating over 100 for the final 10 games of the season, and he completed just 57.2% of his passes, averaged just 5.97 yards per attempt, was sacked 35 times and had a passer rating of 81.9 in the final 10 games. He finished the year with the lowest passer rating (92.7), completion percentage (60.7%) and yards per attempt (6.68) in his eight years. Rodgers was also sacked 46 times, the second most in his career and second most this season.

The loss of WR Jordy Nelson was huge. The injuries across the offensive line was also a contributing factor in Rodgers' struggles.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has thrown for 291 yards per game and nine touchdowns and zero interceptions in three career playoff games.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith had his best game in the postseason when the Chiefs played the Colts in 2013. In that game, Smith let it fly and was aggressive as a passer. He finished that contest 30-of-46 for 378 yards and four touchdowns. We'll see if he can once again take the governor off the passing attack and have another big playoff game.

Meh. It's Wednesday, and we're not that worried. Peterson should be ready to rock for Sunday's game at home against the Seahawks.

WAS - Limited practice for RB Matt Jones

Source: The Washington Times - Anthony Gulizia

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones (hip) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Jan. 6. He has been inactive the last two games.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones could be in action on Sunday against the Packers, but he'd work as a part-time change-of-pace back behind Alfred Morris. His playing status is very much in doubt for Washington's playoff game.

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson (knee) practiced in full Wednesday, Jan. 6.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers secondary is banged up right now, so Jackson could have a nice day in the Wild Card round. Keep him in mind when putting together your DFS lineups.

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ribs) was limited in practice Wednesday, Jan. 6.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not thrilled with the Packers rushing attack right now. Lacy and James Starks could be somewhat productive against a Washington defense that ranked 26th in the league against the run. Washington surrenders an average of 122.6 rushing yards per game.

Houston Texans WRs DeAndre Hopkins (hand) and Cecil Shorts (hamstring) and RB Alfred Blue (calf) were limited in practice Wednesday, Jan. 6.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Shorts and Nate Washington a bit banged up, we could see rookie Jaelen Strong as the WR2 opposite Hopkins on Wild Card Weekend. We loved Strong coming out of Arizona State, and he's been coming on towards the end of the year. Keep his name in mind when looking for a cheap WR for DFS plays.

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has a good chance to remain the defensive coordinator, according to head coach Sean Payton.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen may have struggled as a head coach, but he can be a good defensive coordinator. He took over for Rob Ryan after he was fired from the Saints staff. With better talent, Allen should be able to structure a better defense.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees should still be the starting quarterback under retained head coach Sean Payton, according to Payton.

                                        [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No doubt about it. Payton and Brees are tied to each other, and it's a wise move to keep both around going forward. It was a down year for the Saints in 2015, but with a better defense they should be able to compete for a spot in the 2016 postseason.

He'll have another bone graft added to his foot and will have his ankle cleaned up, and the Cowboys are expecting him to be ready for the offseason program in April.

I don't get what Smith did wrong. The Bucs finished 6-10, which was well above expectations. They were 2-14 two years ago and this year they started a rookie qb the entire season.

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones (hip) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 7, and he said that he 'probably' wouldn't be able to play if the team's game was on Thursday. 'I can run and do drills, but certain moves, I can't make,' Jones said. 'I'm still trying to find if I can play through it or not. If I do a cut and feel it, I'm going to try to see if I can push through it and tolerate it to see.' RB Pierre Thomas was used as the backup to RB Alfred Morris the last two weeks, while RB Chris Thompson also saw limited work. Head coach Jay Gruden expects to make a decision on Jones either Friday, Jan. 8, or Saturday, Jan. 9.

We think Morris is the guy here and he has some nice RB1 value. We may have to wait a little longer to find out about Jones, which can be a problem at sites which lock their lineups upon kickoff of the first game, but we'd roll with Morris anyway. Even if Jones plays he isn't 100 percent and so Morris will get carries.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) should be ready to play against next week against the Denver Broncos if the Steelers beat the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend.

We think Fitzgerald Toussaint is going to get the bulk of the carries though the backfield will remain a time share. He's a low-level RB1 and there is a big gap between him and guys Like Adrian Peterson or even Charcandrick West.

He was injured at the seven-minute mark of the second quarter. He was very sore Monday, Jan. 4, and stayed in Denver during the team's three day break to receive treatment. Osweiler is expected to be ready to take practice repetitions next week.

Another reason why Gary Kubiak is fine with Peyton Manning under center in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

PIT - RB Fitzgerald Toussaint prepared to start

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Fitzgerald Toussaint is preparing as if he'll start in the wild-card game this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals with RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) still in a walking boot. Toussaint had 18 carries for just 42 yards in the regular season, but his teammates have confidence that he can get the job done if Williams can't play. 'I take pride in my work ethic,' said Toussaint. 'I go out there every day and put it all on the line. I will be ready if my number is called. I hope DeAngelo is good, but I have to be ready to take on that task.'

Toussaint is an interesting player, and even if he splits time with Jordan Todman he should get most of the carries. Keep it locked here in case DeAngelo Williams is a 'go' and given that this is a late game, if you can't swap a player out after the early Saturday kicks off, you might want a safer choice. We have him as a low-end RB1 but the expected gap between him and guys like Charcandrick West or Adrian Peterson is big.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant said Wednesday, Jan. 6, that he was happy QB Ben Roethlisberger challenged him. 'I'm happy he issued out the challenge,' Bryant said. 'I accept it.' Bryant added he is eager to get back on the field.

We think Bryant takes the talk in stride and is better for it. In fact, we think he has a tremendous game this weekend and should be a solid WR1 pick in playoff leagues and a good value in daily fantasy games.

If Lynch plays - and we expect him to - we think he's a solid RB1 play against the Vikings. We're a little shakier on Lockett. He has great upside but Doug Baldwin is on fire. That said, Lockett is cheap at a lot of daily sites and worth a value play.

He gets his yards through the air as well. We don't expect that to change though a new coach could change up how much a role he has in 2016.

Some feel Marrone got enough of a fair shake in Buffalo and he's done OK in Jacksonville. It's early in the process though so we'll see what the result is. Marrone doesn't have a huge ego and might be a good fit in the power structure Cleveland is trying to build.

If the Bengals hope to advance, it'll be with A.J. McCarron at the helm. McCarron isn't an exciting option, and he's only surpassed 200 yards passing once since he took over. He might be a cheaper option in daily games with a little upside though.

We think Jackson will be good to go this weekend, though th Packers defense has actually been good against the pass overall this year though two of the last three weeks have seen them allow more than their 218 yards per game average. We like Jackson as a WR2 type and a nice value in daily games.

Both Miller and Bryant represent nice value plays in daily leagues. Miller could produce nice numbers at a good price in a lackluster week for tight ends while Bryant has good upside for a reasonable fee assuming you believe Ben Roethlisberger's recent talk with him pays off. We're in that camp and love his upside.

Kelce could be a great tight end play in a group which isnt exciting outside of Jordan Reed. Ware will cut into Charcandrick West's numbers a little but not enough to kill his value. West remains a top RB1 play while Ware is a decent RB3 with upside.

Lacy is a shaky bet. The matchup isn't bad but Mike McCarthy bailed on the run way too early last week. He should be a solid RB1 play but the uncertain playcalling and the fact that he looks off this year make him a less solid play.

We love Maclin this week even against a difficult Texans defense. He's not too expensive at most Daily fantasy sites as well.

Hopkins will be a solid WR1 play this weekend and could be well worth the price in daily fantasy. Shorts is a so-so play though he has more upside than fellow Texans Nate Washington. Polk isn't worth a play, especially with a knee issue.

We'll watch this because we think Blue is a solid low-end RB1 option. Nate Washington is one of the poorer options at wide receiver this weekend, because he's so unpredictable. Use him as a Hail Mary play at most.

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning (foot) didn't have any setbacks with his foot in Week 17 against the San Diego Chargers. Manning's torn plantar fascia in his left foot won't heal until the offseason, but he'll have the benefit of a bye week before the divisional round of the playoffs.

We expect Manning under center next week against whomever advances from the Wild Card round. We're not sure exactly what to expect from Manning but we'll have more of an idea when we know who the opponent is.

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) remains day-to-day after practicing Thursday, Jan. 7.

We think he'll play, though he might be somewhat limited in terms of overall snap count.

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (Achilles') is expected to be ready for training camp, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

One more time for Smith, who was on fire before his injury. He may not be quite the same player coming off an Achilles injury but it's a boost for the offense heading into 2016.

New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo interviewed with the New York Giants Thursday, Jan. 7, for their head coaching vacancy.

Spagnuolo would keep a "Tom Coughlin" vibe around as he was part if Coughlin's staff earlier in the coach's tenure. He might also be willing to keep Ben McAdoo as offensive coordinator, which would please Eli Manning.

We'll have to watch this more closely next week but expect him to rest more now. The team needs him for the Divisional round game, so they will try to get him as healthy as possible.

TB - Dirk Koetter the front-runner in Tampa

Updating a previous item, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter appears to be the front-runner to become the team's next head coach. The Buccaneers will 'go through the process' of searching for a new head coach, but the eventual target seems obvious in Koetter. Koetter has never been a head coach in the NFL. He's also drawing interest from other NFL teams.

As expected. They will need to fulfill the Rooney Rule of course and will turn over some stones but this was all about keeping Koetter in place.

It's just rest so he is fresh against a tough Seattle Seahawks defense. Peterson is one of the safer bets in fantasy this weekend and we would pay up for him in daily contests as well.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is a candidate for the Bucs head coaching vacancy and will be interviewed, according to an NFL source.

With a solid season out of rookie quarterback Jameis Winston, the last thing the Bucs want to do is send everything askew with a massive change. Rumor has it that Koetter had one foot out of the door, so they decided they would promote him. How true that is might be up for discussion but it's clear Tampa Bay really wants things to stay smooth for their new franchise quarterback.

Pederson has made the Chiefs offense functional at least and overcame the loss of Jamaal Charles. That said, it's still the 27th ranked offense (30th passing, 6th rushing) per NFL.com so how exciting is he really?
