Interesting to say the least. Appears that the Padres are going all in.

I still see them finishing behind both Los Angeles and San Francisco this year...

Padres acquire Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton from Braves

        By Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

        April 5, 2015 7:41 pm ET

The Padres and Braves completed a trade on Sunday that sent closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton to San Diego for Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, Matt Wisler, Jordan Paroubeck and the No. 41 overall pick in next year's draft, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. The teams later confirmed the report.

Kimbrel led the league in saves in 2014 with 47 and a 1.61 ERA in 61 2/3 innings pitched. Upton will join his brother, Justin, in San Diego. He hit .208 with 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 519 at-bats in 2014.
The Braves are also expected to designate Quentin for assignment after the trade, according to Heyman. Quentin hit .177 with four home runs and 18 RBI in 130 at-bats in 2014

Bad teams don't need closers, but then again they don't need +$5 million salary gain in Trevor Cahill. What does he offer?

Giants already having issues. Peavy was scratched and now Cain has issues.

Matt Cain underwent an MRI on Monday due to tightness in his right forearm.
Cain felt the tightness after his last spring training outing. The Giants haven't officially ruled him out for Wednesday's start in Arizona, but don't count on him taking the ball then. Forearm tightness can be a symptom of ulnar collateral ligament damage, so the Giants will be sweating this one out.

Maybe the Boston Red Sox had their ace all along.Clay Buchholz threw three-hit ball over seven innings, Hanley Ramirez and Dustin Pedroia each hit two home runs and the Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-0 in an interleague opener Monday.
Buchholz (1-0) gave the Red Sox reason to believe they might not need to trade for a No. 1 pitcher - namely Cole Hamels (0-1). The right-hander struck out nine and pitched like the guy who went 12-1 in 2013.
''This is how I planned it in my head,'' Buchholz said. ''Everybody's opinion about the rotation outside the clubhouse is different than what's in here.''
Ramirez and Pedroia raved about their pitcher.
                    ''He was awesome,'' Pedroia said.
''Best thing I saw was Buchholz,'' Ramirez said.
Ramirez made quite an impression in his first game since the free agent signed an $88 million, four-year contract. He hit a solo homer in the fifth and a grand slam off Jake Diekman in the ninth.
''This is what I expect from the team, everybody hitting home runs and scoring a lot of runs,'' Ramirez said.
Hamels gave up five hits in five innings, striking out six. He allowed four homers for the second time in his career.
Mookie Betts also homered for Boston.
The Red Sox have been considered front-runners to land Hamels since the rebuilding Phillies made the 2008 World Series MVP available. But Boston isn't going to trade its best prospects for this version of Hamels.
''It's discouraging,'' Hamels said. ''You want to get the first win for your teammates and the organization. We didn't get the win and I'm the culprit.''
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz kept both feet in the batter's box for nearly every pitch during his four at-bats, going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Ortiz made it clear in spring training he doesn't like baseball's new pace of play rules, but he adhered to them in his first game. The only time he stepped out was after fouling a ball off his foot.
Ortiz left the clubhouse before reporters were allowed inside. Plate umpire Gerry Davis said he had no issues with Big Papi.
The revamped Red Sox spent $183 million on Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval, hoping their offense can lead them to another worst-to-first season like they had when they won the World Series in 2013.
Sandoval was 0 for 5 with two strikeouts.
Buchholz didn't allow a hit until Ryan Howard lined an 0-2 pitch for a double with two outs in the fourth. Junichi Tazawa tossed a perfect eighth and Tommy Layne finished the three-hitter.

They have a decent chance but I just don't know which teams in the East are going to keep their pitching staffs together. If one of Boston's veteran (top 3) pitchers get hurt I think they might be in some trouble.

They are probably are still a bit light on pitching.
They can always trade for some before the end trade deadline. Clear favorites for the AL East imo.

I can assume Shortstop and Archie are on board here?

Pirates signed INF Josh Harrison to a four-year, $27.3 million contract extension.

It's being called a four-year extension, but the 2015 season is included so it's really a three-year extension which also includes club options for 2019 and 2020. Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the deal could max out at $50.3 million if the options are picked up. Harrison is coming off a breakout campaign, having batted .315/.347/.490 with 13 homers and 18 steals in 2014 while making the All-Star team. He offers the Pirates some long-term flexibility with the ability to play multiple positions.

I agree, I think he is going to have a big year. I have him on about half of my teams.

This move hasn't worked yet, but have plenty of team to settle in. What can Tomas do?

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Wednesday that Yasmany Tomas "needs to get in better shape."

It's been a rocky marriage so far between the Diamondbacks and Tomas, who's currently working on his defense at Triple-A Reno. Tomas was signed to a six-year, $68.5 million contract last November, but he showed up to camp with a huskier build than the D'Backs would have liked and failed to show defensive promise at third base. "I think fitness-wise, he needs to get in better shape," Hale said. "He knows that. He worked really hard all spring. It's not just working hard, it's how you eat and learning a new country and all these things. I mean, it hasn't been easy for him."
