if he is still available in your leagues, jose valverde has been named the closer of the detroit tigers...he's looked good so far in his high A innings, and that bullpen is such a mess it was only a matter of time. i actually had him stashed on my roster for a few weeks now, he should hopefully be a good source of saves as the tigers have solid pitching and a great offense, they should get their wins

#19As long as you have two other more reliable closers, then Valverde is a good risk. I wouldn't want to need to rely on him though, he can implode on a moment's notice.Comment -

#20Watching the game yesterday I wouldn't take a chance on him. KC bats just missed on him. His fastball had little movement and it's the only pitched he used.Comment -

#21my closer situation has finally stabilized after being pretty shaky early on...i am pretty big into save chasing and free agent closers because i tend to avoid drafting the high price big name closers, and just finding the saves down the road. i started my season with jj putz, huston street, mitch boggs, and jose veras...all relatively cheap at the draft table. i traded street and veras, and both have been ineffective...and bloggs and putz have been bad this year...thankfully i stashed valverde in my NA spot, and grabbed bailey as a free agent very early on when someone dropped him before hanrahan blew up. i also grabbed ed mujica when boggs was imploding...so now my closers are:
putz, bailey, mujica, valverde...i got 5 saves last week and 6 saves already this week, plus valverde/bailey/mujica combined for 3 IP, 3K, 0BB, 3 SV, 0.00ERA and 0.00WHIP last night
i will keep my eyes and ears out for any closer changes and let you guys know. the brewers are looking to give K-rod a contract so there may be potential there, we will seeComment -

#22Tigers should try and bring out Billy Wagner from retirement. Sandman would fit in perfect as the closer and would be lights out in the ALComment -

#26STL has changed to Rosenthal as their closer, he hasn't been great but not horrible either. He throws heat and the Cards could give him a fair number of chances this season, a possible sleeper in deeper leagues.Comment -

#32i wouldnt look too much into rosenthal as the closer any time soon...while he does have the pitches to become one, he doesnt seem to have the mental makeup or control...being a closer is way more than just about having the pitches, mujica is a veteran that can induce ground balls, get big outs, and he now has the trust...a low whip/era are also key which rosenthal does not have
as for valverde, its being reported he lost a good amount of weight and is in better shape, hitting mid 90s on his fastball (hit 95 the other night) im not saying hes an elite option but i dont think he will be killing fantasy ownersComment -

#34Rosenthal definitely has the "stuff", he had one outing recently where he threw 12 fastballs and 11 of them were at least 99 MPH. If he could get control of his off speed stuff, he could be an ideal closer. That is easier said than done though one month into the season, he should have been working on that in the off-season/exhibition games.Comment -
