Colorado lost it's defensive star when DE Forest West decided to transfer to N.C. State. West will sit out 2011, and havre two years of eligability left, starting in 2012. This is a huge blow to a defense that had all kinds of question marks going in.

      OKLAHOMA
The Sooners have plenty of talent returning this fall and expectations are running high in Norman, Oklahoma. Many think this 2011 team can make a run at a national title.

      Nonconference (with 2010 records):
      Sept. 3, Tulsa (10-3)
Sept. 17, at Florida State (10-4)
      Oct. 1, Ball State (4-8)

      Home Conference Games:
      Sept. 24, Missouri (10-3)
      Oct. 8, Texas (5-7) Dallas
      Oct. 22, Texas Tech (8-5)
      Nov. 5, Texas A&M (9-4)
      Nov. 12, Iowa State (5-7)

      Away Conference Games:
      Oct. 15, Kansas (3-9)
      Oct. 29, Kansas St. (7-6)
      Nov. 19, Baylor (7-6)
      Dec. 3, Oklahoma St. (11-2)

The September 17 road trip to Florida State will tell us a lot about this team. Both of Oklahoma's losses last year were road games in tough environments and Tallahassee will fit that bill. Coming off a tough trip to FSU, the Sooners will have to entertain Missouri, one of the team's that defeated them last year. If Oklahoma plays up to their potential, they should win, but Missouri is one of the teams on Oklahoma's schedule with a realistic chance to beat the Sooners at home this season. Beating Oklahoma at home is no easy task however, Bob Stoops is 66-2 during his time there and the Sooners are on a 36 game win streak.

The Sooners' neutral-site date with Texas gives them a 4-4-1 home-away conference schedule, and it's fairly balanced, despite having return trips to Oklahoma State and Baylor, where Oklahoma won last year. The nonconference games rank among the Big 12's toughest, but the schedule is spaced out well.

The early Florida State-Missouri back to back is probably the toughest two-week stretch for the Sooners and should give us an early indication as to where the Sooners will stand in the national picture.

Strange not seeing Nebraska or Colorado on the Big 12 schedules. Maybe some of these moves will prove to be good for the schools, but I don't like it being a traditionalist. I'll miss some of the old time rivalries and it fuks things up for capping too in some ways. But I also liked it much more when there were less pro teams. Oh hell...shit happens.

Chunk, lots of changes going on in college football these days. Teams swapping conferences, players transferring, coaches in trouble........you need a scorecard to keep up with everything thats going on.

          OHIO STATE
Ohio State will not have to pay for Jim Tressel's legal team as the Buckeyes coach prepares to defend himself against NCAA charges that he knew his players received improper benefits but didn't report it. Athletic director Gene Smith confirmed yesterday that Tressel is responsible for his own lawyers. Tressel, in his 11th year at Ohio State, has hired Gene Marsh, a former chairman of the NCAA's committee on infractions, in advance of his August 12 appearance before that same committee. Chuck Smrt, a former member of the NCAA's enforcement staff, will handle Ohio State's side of the case. Tressel has admitted he learned his players were trading memorabilia for cash and free tattoos from a local businessman but did not tell his superiors until confronted more than nine months later. Sounds like Ohio State is telling Tressel that he is on his own.....Tressel will be history soon.

          TEXAS
Texas lawmakers gave final approval to a crackdown on unethical sports agents that could lead to long prison terms. Texas is one of about 40 states that already have laws regulating sports agents, but supporters say the new Texas measure would be the toughest in the country, threatening agents who lure college athletes into contracts with improper benefits and gifts that cost an athlete their NCAA eligibility with felony charges and up to 10 years in prison.

          AUBURN
Four former Auburn football players have been indicted on felony robbery and burglary charges by a Lee County grand jury. Court documents posted yesterday show that Michael McNeil, Antonio Goodwin, Shaun Kitchens and Dakota Mosley were indicted on five counts of first degree robbery, one count of first degree burglary and one count of misemeanor third degree theft of property. They are scheduled for arraignment May 26 in Lee County Circuit Court, with a tentative trial date of June 16. Mosley also faces a misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to hinder business. The listed potential witnesses in the case include Auburn running backs Mike Dyer and Anthony Morgan, wide receiver DeAngelo Benton and defensive back Neiko Thorpe. Stay tuned.....

                ALABAMA
Alabama returns as much talent on defense as any team in the country. Linebackers Dont'a Hightower and Courtney Upshaw, along with safeties Mark Barron and Robert Lester and cornerbacks DeQuan Menzie and Dre Kirkpatrick, all have a chance to be forst or second-round draft picks. In other words, the Crimson Tid won't like for talent on defense. Everybody is back in the secondary next season, and don't be surprised if Menzie and Kirkpatrick end up forming one of the best cornerback combos in the league. Barron and Lester will be one of the best safety tandems, and there is depth all over the place pushing them. Alabama won't be limited the way it was in the secondary last season, which will open up more things across the board defensively for the Crimson Tide. This defense should be damn good.

                TEXAS A&M
A little over a month after committing to Oklahoma State, athlete Bralon Addison changed his mind and pledged to play for Texas A&M. This gives the Aggies 22 commits, the most of any team in the country with more than eight months remaining in the 2012 recruiting season. Addison projects as a receiver in college, but plays quarterback for Missouri City (Texas) Hightower.

                ARKANSAS
Arkansas offensive lineman Seth Oxner said he's is leaving the Razorbacks' football program. Oxner said in a statement released by the school that he has graduated from the University but he won't return next season. The senior started every game at center during the 2009 season but was beaten out by Travis Swanson last season and served as a backup. He was listed as the backup center and co-first team guard on the depth chart that was released before spring practice.

                STANFORD/NOTRE DAME
Stanford announced it is extending its annual foothall series with Notre Dame through the 2019 season. Athletic director Bob Bowlsby said that the schools are extending their home and home series for eight additional years. The teams were already scheduled to play this year on November 26 at Stanford Stadium. The two schools have played 25 times beginning in the 1925 Rose Bowl. The Irish hold a 17-8 advantage in the series, although Stanford has won the last two games. The two schools have met in 21 out of the last 23 seasons dating back to 1988.

                GEORGIA/CLEMSON
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Georgia and Clemson will open their seasons playing each other in 2013 and 2014. Georgia will travel to Clemson on August 31, 2113 and Clemson will return the favor the following season on August 30. The Bulldogs and Tigers last played in 2003 when Georgia defeated Clemson 30-0. Georgia and Clemson are a short distance apart and good to see the schools playing each other again.

                TEXAS STATE
Former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione is returning to coaching. Franchione begins his 26th season as a collegiate head coach at Texas State with a 187-101-2 career record, including a 13-9 mark at Texas State in 1990-91. Franchione has been the head coach at Pittsburg State, Texas State, New Mexico, TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M. He's guided his teams to 10 conference championships and 9 bowl games. Texas State, a member of the Southland Conference will join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 2012.

Notre Dame made sure that it's final game of the season will be on the West Coast by extending their series with Stanford. Stanford and USC alternate home dates against Notre Dame, allowing the Irish to end the season on the West Coast, for recruiting purposes. Normally, the Irish HC stays over after the game to recruit West Coast players. The game in South Bend is normally played on the 3rd week in October.

                    2011 RIMINGTON AWARD
The Rimington Award is given annually to the nation's best center, and has been one of the most prestigious awards for Division 1-A offensive linemen. Last year's winner was TCU's Jake Kirkpatrick. This year, a whopping total of 42 players have been named to the initial watch list for the 2011 award. Let's see...there are 120 starting centers in Division 1-A football and 42 make the watch list. Thirty-five percent of all starting centers are on the watch list. Give me a break. The SEC had seven listed on the watch list (Ala, Ark, Ky, LSU, Ga, SC, Ole Ms).

                    LOUISVILLE
Former Missouri quarterback Tyler Gabbert was in Louisville yesterday visiting the Cardinal. If you connect the personal relationship dots, the Cardinals appear to make the most sense of the four schools (Iowa, Arizona, Wake Forest, Louisville) Gabbert is considering transferring to. Gabbert was originally committed and was recruited by Shawn Watson, who at the time was Nebraska's offensive coordinator. Watson is now the quarterback coach at Louisville, and remains a longtime friend of the Gabbert family.

                    APPALACHIAN STATE
Appalachian State has been considering a move from 1-AA to 1-A, but at this time, the move is on hold. The school announced yesterday that the athletics feasibility study committee will continue its work and not make a recommendation at this time. There are two reasons for delaying a decision on a move up a level. One concern is whether App State could find a conference fit and the other is funding.

                    MEMPHIS STATE
Last season, Mo Seisay started every game at cornerback for Memphis. Seisay has now decided to transfer from the Tiger football program to the JUCO level. Reports are Seisay will begin classes at Eastern Arizona in the next couple of weeks. Seisay had been moved from cornerback to safety during the spring, which apparently played a role in the decision to move on. After a season at Eastern Arizona, he can transfer to another Division 1-A school.

It looks like Lee "not so fast" Corso won't be back on ESPN's Gameday next year. You could tell that the stroke took a toll last year as he wasn't quite himself. Gameday is a good mood setter for a big day of college football and Corso was a hoot. I for one am going to miss his presence.

                            BIG TEN
The Big 10 Conference will have 14 games in primetime this season. Here's a look at the complete primetime slate:

Sept. 1, UNLV at Wisconsin, 8 pm EST, ESPN
Sept. 2, Youngtowns State at Michigan State, 7:30 pm, Big Ten Network
Sept. 10. Notre Dame at Michigan, 8 pm, ESPN
Sept. 10. Virginia at Indiana, 7 pm, Big Ten Network
Sept. 17, Arizona State at Illinois, 7 pm, Big Ten Network
Sept. 24, North Dakota State at Minnesota, 7 pm, Big Ten Network
Oct. 1, Nebraska at Wisconsin, 8 pm, ABC or ESPN
Oct. 1, Notre Dame at Purdue, 8 pm, ABC or ESPN
Oct. 8, Ohio State at Nebraska, 8 pm, ABC or ESPN
Oct. 8, Michigan at Northwestern, 7 pm, Big Ten Network
Oct. 15, Northwestern at Iowa, 7 pm, Big Ten Network
Oct. 22, Wisconsin at Michigan State, 8 pm, ABC or ESPN
Oct. 22, Penn State at Northwestern, 7 pm, Big Ten Network
Oct. 29, Wisconsin at Ohio State, 8 pm, ABC or ESPN

Seems Northwestern is the big winner in the Big Ten Network lineup with three consecutive night games in October, two at home. I look forward to the October 8 game between Ohio State and Nebraska. Wisconsin at Ohio State on October 29 might also be interesting.

                              NCAA and BCS
NCAA President Mark Emmert told the Justice Department last week that its questions about the lack of a playoff system for college football are best directed to another group...the Bowl Championship Series. Other than licensing the postseason bowls, "the NCAA has no role to play in the BCS or the BCS system," Emmert wrote in a letter to the department's antitrust chief, Christine Varney. He added that short of member colleges and universities discontinuing the BCS and proposing an NCAA championship, "there is no directive for the NCAA to establish a playoff."

                              ARKANSAS
The Razorbacks and Bobby Petrino have agreed to the terms of a new contract that will pay Petrino $3.56 million for the next seven years. Petrino's buyout for the first two years of the deal is $18 million and will remain about $10 million through the first five years. The buyout then drops to $7.375 million in the sixth year and $3.925 million in the seventh year. Additionally, the contract mandates that Petrino is not allowed to leave Arkansas for any SEC school, but will pay Petrino $300,000 for winning a national championship and $100,000 for an SEC championship. Sounds like a long term commitment by both the coach and the university.

                              OLE MISS
Four-star wide receiver and Ole Miss signee Tobias Singleton is looking to get a disturbing the peace charge against him dropped if he completes an anger management course and a period of probation. The charge stems from an incident where Singleton punched his girlfriend and cause over $3,000 worth of damage to her car. Ole Miss and Houston Nutt are bringing in some 'classy' players to Oxford.

                              CLEMSON
It's been about a month since QB Nathan Stanley decided to leave the Ole Miss football program, and the quarterback has received interest from a dozen or so schools. Included in those schools are Division 1-AA level Montana, Montana State and Eastern Washington among others. Somewhat surprising to me is Clemson is showing some interest. Tajh Boyd is expected to be Clemson's starting quarterback for the foreseeable future and he has three years of eligibility remaining. Stanley had been involved in a four-way battle for the starting job this spring, but after falling down the depth chart, decided to transfer.

                              LOUISVILLE
Louisville will lose three scholarships this season as coach Charlie Strong and the Cardinals did not meet the minimum Academic Progress Rate for the 2010-2011 academic year. Louisville signed 21 players this past signing day, so the three scholarship reduction really shouldn't be that big of a deal; Louisville is still allowed to maintain 85 scholarship players on its roster. The Cardinals have only one extra scholarship to give at this point for the 2011 season instead of four.

That sucks for strong and the cards, I think that was his 1st year there, not much you can do to improve players grades in that short of time.

there are rumors that gabbert jr will be a cardinal. It's a bummer for louisville not to get those scholarships, but strong has this program in thr right path

                                    INDIANA
Indiana's defense wasn't very good last year to say the least. The Defense allowed 34 points per game and only Michigan allowed more in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers gave up 34 points or more five of their eight Big Ten games. Wisconsin ripped them for 83 points. The pass defense was simple terrible allowing opponents to complete 65% of their passes which was tenth in the Big Ten. They had only eight interceptions while allowing 27 touchdown passes (both worst in the league). Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, they didn't find any answers during the spring. The secondary was again inconsistent and allowed receivers to get behind them numerous times during the spring game. The defense is still a work in progress for 2011. Against a good passing team, the 'over' might be a good play. Keep in mind that there is very little talent on the offense either. Another long year for the Hoosiers.

                                    ALABAMA
Senior running back Demetrius Goode has transferred to North Alabama. According to NCAA rules, Goode, who has one year of eligibility remaining, can play immediately because he is transferring to a Divison II program. At Alabama, Goode had very little chance of playing with all the backs ahead of him. Terry Bowden (former Auburn head coach) is the head coach at North Alabama.

                                    GEORGIA
Former Bulldog assistant football coach Jim Pyburn died Saturday night in Jasper, Alabama, after a long illness. The father of former Georgia quarterback Jeff Pyburn (1976-79). Jim Pyburn coached defensive line, linebackers and secondary from 1964-79 under Georgia coach Vince Dooley. I got to know coach Pyburn some over the years and not only was he a good coach, he was a good man. The funeral will be Wednesday in Birmingham.

I wish nothing but the best for D. Goode, he is a great ball player, but has too much younger talent in front of him. He will do well at UNA.

It does open up a spot on the roster though.

Indiana does play three soft non-con teams, but that may be the only three wins they get this season. A historically poor team (one bowl appearance since 1993 and no bowl wins since 1991) certainly is not getting any better.

Yeah CCI, Goode is a good player but was just part of a crowded backfield during his time at Bama. Throughout his career, he was stuck behind running backs such as Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. After redshirting in 2007, he appeared in 20 games during 2008-2010 and gained 246 yards.

This is the third time Terry Bowden has taken players from Alabama in the past three years. Previously, linebacker Brandon Fanning transferred to UNA to play his final season of eligibility, while defensive back Rod Woodson came to the Lions last year and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Goode was liked and respected by both players and coaches at Alabama. I know the kid will do well at his new school.

BD, I believe Indiana won one conference game last year.

I'm not sure they can accomplish that this season.

That is correct. They upset Purdue in the last game of the season. Their other wins came against Towson, Western Kentucky, Akron, and Arkansas State (by 2 points). They have three wins in three years against Big 10 teams, and 14 wins in the past 9 seasons against Big 10 teams. It does not get any worse than that in the Big 10.

This guy runs hot and cold all of the time. This team backed into the SEC East Championship. They lost 5 games last season. That is certainly nothing to brag about.

Obviously, it is up to each individual and their person opinion. In the history of college football there have been 206 bowl games in which both programs were ranked in the AP top 10 prior to the kickoff of the bowl game.
