UCLA Head Coach Rick Neuheisel decided to take a vacation in the midst of all the Bruin problems involving the hiring oif new coaches. With vacancies at Defensive Coordinator, Backs Coack, and Running Game Cooordinator, Neuheisel decided to jet down to Cabo San Lucas for a few days, to recover from the rigors of the recruiting season. It must have been tough for Neuheisel, because UCLA finished at or near the bottom of the Pac-12 recruiting score card.

Tennessee is really going to hve depth issues at the rate they are losing players. If Jackson is lost for the season, that means that Tennessee will have lost all three starting LB's, both starting DE's, and now, a very good SS. Tennessee was very thin going into this season, and none of this helps. With backup QB Nance on the bench, Tennessee will now be thin at QB, where Simms is certainly no bargain package.

Tennessee will continue to have depth issues until 2012 where they can finally be able to reach the 85 scholarship mark. The players leaving the program are Kiffin guys and its to be expected that some will not make it with the new staff. Kiffin sent many of Fulmer's guys packing and now Dooley is going through it with Kiffin's guys.

Things arent so bleak on the first line of the depth chart. They only lose 2 starting linebackers in Nick Reveiz and LaMarcus Thompson, Herman Lathers returns. Greg King will more than likely move into the starting role after being injured last year (played in 9 games as a Freshman in 2009). The 3rd spot is up in the air at this point. The DE's get help from the return of Ben Martin who has been granted a medical redshirt. Im not counting on Jackson returning but there were a lot of guys who got experience last year in the secondary and it helps they signed 7 DBs this past class. Nash Nance was basically a warm body and may have been a package deal to get Da'Rick Rogers last year. Bray, Simms and freshman Justin Worley should be enough to get through the year at QB if Nance is lost for more than just spring practice.

They will probably continue to struggle due to depth but this team has more front end talent than last. 2012 cant come soon enough for the Vols, itll be another struggle to reach the 7 win mark. Not too many programs can withstand 3 different coaches in 3 years and Tennessee is no exception.

UT, you would know better than I, but it looks like the Vols will be losing (from guys who played last season) the following:

        FB Kevin Cooper
        WR Gerald Jones
        WR Denarius Moore
        TE Luke Stocker
        OG Jarrod Shaw
        DE Chris Walker
        DT Victor Thomas
        LB LaMarcus Thompson
        LB Nick Reveic
        LB Savion Fraizer
        P Chad Cunningham
        K Daniel Lincoln

I'm sure Dooley is expecting help from some of his recruits this season.

Yes all those players will be graduating but Luke Stocker and the receivers are the most talented people leaving. The young freshman receivers showed a lot of promise this year so hopefully the transistion will be a smooth one. Justin Hunter is a long down the field threat who honestly may be a future olympian in the high jump and Da'Rick Rogers has shown some big play capability. De'Anthony Arnett and Zach Rogers will look to solidify the slot position.

Kevin Cooper was replaced mid year by freshman Channing Fugate. Jarrod Shaw was really a utility lineman who showed up in the starting lineup when others were knicked up. Walker, Thompson and Reveiz werent the most talented players but were senior leaders and stand up guys off the field. The special teams has potential to be better with 2010's scout.com's #1 K Michael Palardy and #1 P Matt Darr taking over.

In other Vols rumors there are reports that ex wide receievers coach Trooper Taylor (now with Auburn) contacted Gerald Jones to help him out on the recruiting trail. Rumor is that Jones spoke very poorly of UT to recruit Gabe Wright and Antonio Richardson. I know very little of the details or if its even true but this is basically what you get from offseason message board chatter.

You can add Safety Janzen Jackson to the casualty list at Tennessee. It is a good thing that Tennessee plays such a patsy non-con schedule in 2011. Had they played any decent teams, they would never reach the .500 mark.

The situation at Virginia continues to get worse. After losing three players who were arrested on numerous assault charges, RBCorey Mack, who was expected to see a lot of action this season for the Cavaliers, has left the school. I guess this is not the year to be a fan of any team nicknamed "Cavaliers".

With trips to Florida, Alabama, and Arkasas to go along with LSU, UGA and South Carolina at home, I'll take as many Montana's and Buffalo's on the schedule as possible.

You will have to. You just listed six very possible losses. If Tennessee slips up against any of the teams they should defeat (at Kentucky and home to Cincinnati come to mind), they may not win 6 games.

Then again they may surprise some and win a game they arent expected to. Two last second defeats last year kept them from 8 wins. Ive stated that I think 6 wins and maybe a bowl win is likely but I cant put dirt on the Vols this early, that would take all joy out of being a fan. Is it possible for Tennessee to lose to Kentucky? I've never seen it happen.

                      RECRUITING NEVER ENDS
Even while schools were receiving signed faxes from their 2011 recruits on signing day, many of the elite coaches were thinking of 2012 prospects. Hueytown, Alabama high school coach Matt Scott learned that on signing day. Scott fielded calls from Nick Saban (Alabama), Les Miles (LSU), Jim Tressel (Ohio State), Brian Kelley (Notre Dame) and Steve Spurrier (South Carolina) regarding rising senior quarterback JAMEIS WINSTON. He's already been rated the top quarterback recruit for 2012 by national analyst Tom Lemming. "They all wanted to let him know on signing day this year he's their No. 1 guy for next year," Scott said. That's possible per NCAA rules because those coaches called Scott and said they'd like to talk to the passer on 2011's big day. Winston then called back. That's allowed under NCAA rules. Scott is just a short drive down the interstate from the University of Alabama but has stressed it will take a strong baseball and football program to land him. The QB is also a premier baseball prospect who has thrown up to 93 miles per hour at a showcase event at Atlanta's Turner Field. All the coaches who called ask that Scott's 2010 DVD game films be sent to their home addresses. That's how hungry these coaches are every year for the next big thing. They want next year's top prospects to know where they stand even as the results from this year's crop were still coming in.

Jameis Winston is a 6'4", 200 pound dual threat quarterback from Hueytown High School, Hueytown, Alabama. He is rated a 5-star prospect and already has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ohio State, South Carolina, Stanford and UAB.

                        OKLAHOMA STATE
Mike Gundy has completed Oklahoma State's coaching staff by hiring Jemal Singleton away from Indiana before he ever coached in a game with the Hoosiers. Singleton spent the last eight seasons at Air Force, most recently as the running game coordinator.

                        MARYLAND
Looks like Randy Shannon (former Miami head coach) will become the new defensive coordinator for the Terps. Shannon was thought to be going to UCLA but the Bruins would never make a commitment. Seems the head coach needed to take a vacation.

                        TEXAS
Jerry Gray was hired to coach defensive backs back in mid January. Then it was reported he would become defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. Now, reports are that Gray is staying with the Longhorns. Poor ole Mack Brown has had a full time job just trying to get a full staff together.

                        OLE MISS
Look for the Rebels to have a big battle at quarterback this spring. Nathan Stanley, JUCO Zach Stoudt and another JUCO Randall Mackey will have a chance to earn the starting job. Of course, Houston Nutt may go out and bring in some thug like he did last year and we all know how that played out for the Rebels season. West Virginia transfer Barry Brunetti could also be in the mix if he gets a hardship waver.

                        OHIO STATE
Four days after police decided against pursuing charges against Chris Carter for fondling eight underage girls at his high school, Carter is ready to sign with the Buckeyes. Ohio State has kept a spot open in their 2011 recruiting class for him. Maybe getting the big tackle on campus will get him away from the twelve and thirteen years old girls.

                        MICHIGAN STATE
Head coach Mark Dantonio announced he has hired Terrence Samuel as receivers coach. Samuel will replace Don Treadwell, who left to take the head job at Miami of Ohio. Samuel spent last season at Central Michigan.

                        JADEVEON CLOWNEY
This clown said he has known for several days which school he will sign with but won't announce it until the 14th. He has Clemson, South Carolina and Alabama waiting to hear where he will sign because he has an immature dumbass ego. The kid has potential being rated the No. 1 player coming out of high school but I hope like hell he doesn't choose Alabama. We don't need the HOTDOG.

Yes, that certainly would have helped you guys in the Music City Bowl, which was kind of a crazy game to begin with. The big rule change is going to be the blocking rules changes and the unspotsmanlike changes. Some Hotdog is going to cost his team a T.D. and get his sorry tail kicked up 50 rows of seats by an irate head coach. I can't wait to see that.

It will be intersting to see if Spurrier and company can get this kid into school. The problems with kids like him, who probably could not pass a 6th grade English or Math test is that these kids raise Red Flags at the NCAA. If this kid qualifies, the NCAA is going to see just exactly how a kid who does not know how to spell his own name managed to score high enough to get into South Carolina.

AS far as Tennessee is concerned, Dooley has a three ring circus going on out there. This team is already very thin, and this is not going to help. Maybe UTMoody can straighten Dooley out. You cannot keep drafting troublemakers and expect to make any progress.

BigDaddy, I agree with your PM.

Other than Vanderbilt, the SEC allows some borderline idiots into school.

Shameful to be honest with you. Some of these kids belong in trade school where they can develop a craft..... something worthwhile for their future.

The Brewer situation is one that will unfold in the next few weeks. There are some reports that he strangled the woman in question while others say that he was kicked in his nuts and when he threatened to call the cops to get her out of his apartment, she beat him to it. Either way it doesnt look good, if the charges stick, he will most likely be gone. Dooley has done what he has to do in this case and has been pretty forthright about suspending players until the situations play themselves out. With him and Jackson gone it will be a tough blow to what would have been one of their stronger units on the defense. Brewer is honestly the first to come in under Dooley and be in some sort of major trouble, although he wont be the last.

Its a shame that these guys are given an opportunity to go to a school, a school that most would never come close to qualifying into without football, and then behave this way potentially throwing it all away.

The past few years as a Tennessee football fan have been very painful and the hits keep on coming as I am receieving word that Ben Martin has torn his achilles and his career will most likely be over. This is very tough for a guy that was granted a medical red shirt to come back this year and play only to have this happen. You see two sides of the coin here as Brewer is an extremely talented athlete who is turning into his own worst enemy, then you have a guy like Martin who just wants to play for the orange but has been crippled by the injury bug.

I'll be contributing to this thread and I am an Auburn fan, so that may be good or bad for you guys. To those of you who think recruiting is overrated or that more of the top players flunk out or never contribute the facts definitely do not back that up. The 2007 class is the most recent to go through the draft. Here are the numbers. A "bust" was defined as a player who either flunked out, never made it to school, or didn't crack the 2 deep. This class was absolutely LOADED with talent, including Tim Tebow and Cam Newton.

Rivals 5-star football prospects for the class of 2007 produced:
4 NFL caliber quarterbacks and zero busts (0% BR)
3 NFL caliber running backs and zero busts (0% BR)
5 NFL caliber receivers and zero busts (0% BR)
2 contributing offensive tackles and zero busts (0% BR)
3 contributing offensive guards and zero busts (0% BR)
4 NFL caliber defensive ends and zero busts (0% BR)
1 NFL caliber defensive tackle and 1 bust (50% BR)
1 contributing outside linebacker and zero busts (0% BR)
Zero contributing middle linebackers and 1 bust (100% BR)
1 NFL caliber athlete (Chad Jones)
3 NFL caliber cornerbacks and zero busts (0%)
There were no 5-star tight ends, centers or safeties in Rivals’ 2007 rankings.
                                                        Out of a total of twenty-nine 5-star prospects, 21 (72%) are NFL caliber players, 6 (20%) are/were contributing players, and 2 (6%) were busts.

My sister went to Auburn and loved the place. I'm a Bama fan but always pull for the Tigers unless they are playing the Tide. I pull for all SEC teams.

They're just good ole Alabama boys to me. Again, glad to have you Bud.

Rivals 5-star football prospects for the class of 2007 produced: 4 NFL caliber quarterbacks and zero busts (0% BR) 3 NFL caliber running backs and zero busts (0% BR) 5 NFL caliber receivers and zero busts (0% BR) 2 contributing offensive tackles and zero busts (0% BR) 3 contributing offensive guards and zero busts (0% BR) 4 NFL caliber defensive ends and zero busts (0% BR) 1 NFL caliber defensive tackle and 1 bust (50% BR) 1 contributing outside linebacker and zero busts (0% BR) Zero contributing middle linebackers and 1 bust (100% BR) 1 NFL caliber athlete (Chad Jones) 3 NFL caliber cornerbacks and zero busts (0%) There were no 5-star tight ends, centers or safeties in Rivals’ 2007 rankings. Out of a total of twenty-nine 5-star prospects, 21 (72%) are NFL caliber players, 6 (20%) are/were contributing players, and 2 (6%) were busts.
Not sure which class you broke down but Tebow and Newton were in 2006 and 2007 classes respectfully. Also that 2007 class had Chris Donald, Ben Martin and Torrey Davis in it who were busts, so thats more than 2. 2007 was a great class however and these 5 star athletes do have a higher chance on going to the next level. As good as the 2007 class was, you then have classes like 2005 where Derrick Williams, Patrick Turner, Melvin Alaeze, Fred Rouse, and Reggie Youngblood never lived up to the hype (all were in the top 10).

I've said that the truth lies somewhere in between when it comes to the star argument. 5 star athletes are few and far between, usually around 30 a year and they have a high success rate, but they do not give out trophys for recruiting championships. You have to manage these guys, keep their nose clean and coach them up as Bigdaddy has said during this recruiting season. You can go back a a page and read over the struggles my Vols have had with their recent recruiting classes with highly rated players. For every Eric Berry, there has seemed to be a Chris Donald, Kenny O'Neal and Brandon Warren to deal with. There is ammo for both sides of the recruiting argument, that said, I'll still take my chances with the 4 and 5 star guys.

If one wants to view the importance of good recruiting, then look at Alabama under Shula vs under Saban. Good players win ball games, especially in a tough conference like the SEC.

If Vanderbilt had Alabama, Florida or LSU's players do you think they would finish last in the conference every year.

Look what Urban Meyer did at Florida. Strong recruiting classes and bigtime glory. Nothing more important than recruiting in college football.

Sure the top 30 or so have a better shot than some three star selection, but the stars mean little. It is the coaches that have to work with there kids that eventually will tell the tale. USC, with all of its problems with the NCAA, still manages to land a Top class. With only 45 scholarship players on board last season, they still manage 8 wins. That is because of the coaching staff. Texas, with a great recruiting class, hits rock bottom last season, losing 7 games. That is in part, because of the coaching staff. It takes coaches to mold these young men (or in many cases, immature boys) into players.

The 52 year old Tresey had spent the 2010 season as defensive back coach for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. Makes sence to me. I think when Kirby Smart leaves Alabama I will sent a note to Nick Saban and tell him he needs to check out the Omaha Nighthawks for his replacement.

Shannon found out Miami would play hardball and not pay him $1.5 million agreed upon in his buyout if he took the job with Maryland. Shannon was fired as head coach of the Canes after the season. I'm guessing the schools being in the same conference had something to do with this.
