Ackem19's Week 1 Recaps and Game Analysis

Traditionally, I prefer to simply watch as much NCAAF as possible for the first 6 weeks of the season, take notes, and then begin capping Week 7. This gives me enough field data to effectively analyze a team and see where the best matchups are. I figured I may as well share these game notes. If you watched the games, feel free to chime in with any feedback. Can't wait to get started again!

    Wisconsin at LSU (neutral site)

    Wisconsin
    -Offense
    -Pro Style, run first
    -Slow paced offense
-Melvin Gordon III (RB) good, patient, great acceleration. Reads his blocking, finds his gaps, improvises but does it smart, makes a lot of cuts. Great footwork. Protects the ball. Agile. Has the speed to turn a corner and break away. 1st round draft caliber back.
-As always, amazing run blocking on the o-line. Even WR's do a good job. O-Line does an excellent job of holding their men and opening up gaps.
-Balanced rush attack. They do a good job of mixing it up and not favoring one side or inside vs outside
-QB doesn't get much protection. McEvoy is inexperienced and rushes when theres pressure. Very athletic. Doesn't keep eyes down the field. Tucks and runs. Not a QB by nature, converted from DB. Can make plays but won't fair well with smart defenses. Not a passing threat. Short throws. Inaccurate. Not a smart QB. One read. Multiple shots down field with no receiver, just snaps, throws, and doesn't make the right coverage read.

    -Defense
    -3-
    -D-Line Front 7 Avg Ht: 6'2" Wt: 245
-Do a good job of getting to the outside to stop the run. Lineman hold their own against an SEC O-Line.
    -Good pursuit
-Do a good job of creating pressure for the QB.
-Good down field coverage. No blown coverages. Solid Man Defense
    -Aggressive defense.
-Late in the game, they got beat up the middle by the Read-Option handoff to the RB up the middle. LSU would spread out the field in the shotgun formation, and read-option right up the middle.
-They get beat when they drop back in zone coverage.

    LSU
    -Offense
    -Pro Style, power running back.
    -O-Line Avg Ht: 6'5" Wt: 319
-Favor the left side. Jennings (Soph QB) is mobile.
-Conservative play calling. No shots downfield. Screen play is a go to pass play.
-Jennings not very accurate. Not very smart. Not reckless. One read QB. Has a pretty good arm, can get the ball down the field.
-Almost always run on first down.
-Do not want to be forced to throw the ball. If a defense can shut down the run, they've pretty much shut down the offense.
-Very athletic WR's who will burn lesser caliber DB's. Jennings can get the ball to them in the open.
    -Solid pass protection from O-Line.
-Not a perimiter rushing attack. Very much a downhill running game.

    -Defense
-Physical D. Close to the line. 4-man rush. Not a lot of blitzing except for on obvous passing 3rd downs. Disciplined.
    -Motion freezes Defense.
    -Lot of speed on Defense.
-Having a hard time stopping the run but that could just be a great job on the O-Line.
    -Tight man coverage down field.
-Struggles against the no huddle when implemented mid game.

West Virginia at Alabama (Neutral Site)

    West Virginia
    -Offense
-Dana Holgorsen offense. No huddle. Fast paced.
-Great job on the O-Line creating gaps for running Whole team blocks well for rushing. Look for them to bounce outside often.
-Lot of speed. Quick hitting perimeter pass plays.
-O-Line could use improvement in pass protection. Struggles with blitzes.
-Clint Trickett looks really good. No throw he can't make. Acutally reads the D. Not much mobility. Needs protection. Smart QB.
-Kevin White is go-to WR. Looks better with every play. 6'3" 211. Go up there and get it receiver.
-Close red zone Offense can struggle against an aggressive man defense.
-If they can get the rush game going, really opens up their down field threats. Once people have to crowd the line, they will expose the defense. Smart playcalling.
-Struggle in long yardage situations. 3rd and 10 will be rough against a solid defense. No deep ball. QB can make the throws, but doesn't have enough time to make the best decisions leading to challenged balls.
    -Defense
-3 down lineman. 3-3-5. No pressure at all. Will give up chunks up the middle against big lines.
-Man Coverage. Play loose. A good spread will pick them apart.

    Alabama
    -Defense
-4 down lineman. Can't seem to get off of blocks to stop rush. Giving up yards up the middle.
-Stout man coverage, but it does break down over time. If they can't get pressure on the QB (which will happen when there are 5 WRs), they will get beat by a semi-smart QB.
-Pro Style defense. Close CB's, 6-7 in the box. Will do really well against pro-style offense.
-Great, physical, downfield coverage. Don't give up the deep ball. Got beat by Kevin White but it was great coverage. Also, 1-on-1. Happened after the ground game got going.
-Giving up rushing yards to the outside as well. They just look slower and unable to get off of blocks. Out of position.
    -Offense
-Amari Cooper is their big WR. WR's do a good job of blocking.
-Passing game seems conservative, short quick hits.
-Rush game comes from bigger packages. Downhill running.
    -Great pass protection.
-Sims is an inexperienced QB but he has time. Will most likely put up solid numbers because of his O-Line. Very timid. It is the first game. Lacks accuracy. Doesn't seem to be able to really read. Struggles even with time. Maybe he hesitates more than anything.
-90% of ground game goes to the right.

    UCLA @ Virginia

    UCLA
    -Offense
-Dumb QB who lacks accuracy down the field.
-Spread, with screens and options. Mobile QB and a RB who has potential
-Not great on the line. Short throws.
-Seems like if yous top the run, they won't be able to beat you with the pass.
    -Defense
-Good pressure on the QB from the line
-Seems to play straight up man but gets beat.
-Good job of getting in the back field

    Virginia
    -Offense
-QB John's is smart, accurate, and inexperienced. If you give him time, he will beat you. Good with pressure.
-Balanced passing attack that makes sure to have the dump off pass available for the inexperienced qb.
-WR run tight routes that rely on great timing. QB John's has no problem getting the ball to his receivers. Can make every throw on the field.
    -Defense
-Great pressure on the QB and great job in the backfield. Put the O-Line on their heels. Mixes up the blitz packages.
    -3-4
-Man Defense. Very Physical/Tight coverage. Will destroy bad teams.

    New Hampshire @ Toledo

    New Hampshire
    -Offense
    -O-Line is giving NO protection.
-Solid QB. Smart/safe passes. Good decision making. Doesn't force things. Takes care of the ball. Athletic.
-Most rushing plays are read-options but they typically end up with the RB.
-Not having success on the ground.
-Every pass on their first possession was to the right. Drive ended with a WR screen pass on 3rd and long to beat a blitz, resulted in a TD. #
-WR RJ Harris is their go to WR.
-Pass plays are short slants, or medium out routes to the right sideline. No deep balls.
    -Defense
-Did a good job in pass coverage. Good man coverage despite being outclassed athletically.
-Cannot stop the Run game. Getting killed for big gains. Any team who can run the ball would eat up this defense.

    Toledo
    -Offense
-QB Ely makes terrible decisions with ball. Almost threw 2 picks on the opening possession. Both times, he locked onto one receiver, telegraphed, then proceeded to throw into single double coverage, respectively. Good arm though. Can throw the deep ball with accuracy.
-O-Line is playing against an FCS team. They should be dominating, instead they are just holding their own.
-Has more success on the ground than through the air. If forced to win the game through the air...they'd lose, plain and simple.
    -Defense
-Good job by the D-Line of getting to the QB. Blowing through the line.
-4 man rush. Pretty aggressive, like to blitz. They blitz hard on 3rd and long. Got burned on 3rd and 11 blitz by a WR screen to the right which resulted in a TD.
-Lax zone pass coverage. Not stopping anything through the air. Allowing a lot of the short passes.
-Right sideline looks like a weak spot for the D.

    Clemson @ Georgia (Neutral Site)

    Clemson
    -Offense
-QB looks solid. Big play potential but accuracy leaves a lot to be desired.
-O-Line can't seem to protect the QB against a 4-5 man rush.
-Lot of athleticism at WR. Mixed with the QB's arm, they could put up alot of points if the QB has time.
    -Defense
-Getting killed on the ground. Inside/outside, can't get off blocks, can't get make tackles. Gets killed when Offense goes to the right.
-Corners play up close, leaving them vulnerable when the RB gets pas the first level.
    -Man Defense

    Georgia
    -Offense
    -Pro Style offense.
-O-Line is incredible for ground game. Everybody makes their blocks.
-Deep running back committe. Gurley II is probably a 1st round pick.
-RB's are fast, strong, can make people miss. Protect the ball.
-Run plays usually come out of singleback 3 wr formation. Dives or outside runs with G's pulling. Favor the right side.
    -Defense
-Lots of speed on the D-Line. Good job of getting pressure on the QB.
-4-5 man rush and still get to the QB. Lineman are fast. Will cause nightmares for passing teams who rarely run the ball.
