UFC 321 Predictions: Aspinall vs Gane
UFC 321 goes does Saturday, October 25th in Abu Dhabi, headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane.

SBR's Ethan Diamandas breaks down the fights and shares his best bets in his UFC 321 predictions:

Tom Aspinall by submission vs. Ciryl Gane (+275 via DraftKings)

"Aspinall’s speed, precision, and black-belt grappling make this a stylistic nightmare for Gane. The Frenchman’s past losses to Francis Ngannou (4/5 takedowns conceded) and Jon Jones (first-round submission loss via guillotine) exposed his ground gaps. Aspinall averages over 8 significant strikes landed per minute (67% accuracy) and smoothly chains entries from his boxing. One clean level change could end with a rear-naked choke or arm-triangle."

Virna Jandiroba by decision vs. Mackenzie Dern (+270 via FanDuel)

"This rematch hinges on control. Jandiroba lands 2.29 takedowns per 15 minutes (35% accuracy) and defends at 71%, giving her the wrestling edge over Dern’s 0.89 takedown rate (18%). Expect Virna’s positional BJJ with half-guard pins and shoulder pressure to bank rounds rather than chase a risky submission. Dern’s striking defense (44%) means Jandiroba can score early, then grind the rest."

Umar Nurmagomedov by decision vs. Mario Bautista (-167 via BetMGM)

"From the opening bell, expect Umar to dictate every layer of this bout. He works behind disciplined kicks and straight punches, then drops levels when opponents overcommit. Once he grips the hips, the takedown chain begins using singles, trips, and body locks until control is his. Mario Bautista is durable, but Umar’s top-ride and positional patience stack minutes of dominance without risk."

Alexander Volkov by KO, TKO, or DQ vs. Jailton Almeida (+300 via bet365)

"Volkov’s length and timing can flip this fight instantly. Jailton Almeida is a takedown machine, but he defends strikes at just 41%, which is a dangerous flaw against Volkov’s kickboxing. If Almeida’s initial shots fail, he'll walk into knees and uppercuts from the 6’7″ Russian. Volkov has ended half his wins by KO and won’t miss his moment in the pocket."

UFC 321 betting insights from BetMGM:

“The handle is resoundingly behind Tom Aspinall in the main event of UFC 321. An upset for Ciryl Gane would be tremendous for the book, but we will be happy if the fight makes it out of the first round. In the women's strawweight title fight, the slight edge in tickets is currently for the underdog Virna Jandiroba, but I fully expect more money to come in on the fan favorite, Mackenzie Dern, by the time the cage closes. And it appears that Umar Nurmagomedov is included in almost every parlay this weekend as the biggest favorite of the event.” - Alex Rella, Senior Trader, BetMGM

    Most bet (tickets) props
    1. Tom Aspinall to win in 60 seconds or less +1000
    2. Tom Aspinall by Submission +275
    3. Tom Aspinall by Submission in Round 1 +500
    4. Tom Aspinall by Kimura/Americana +4000
    5. Tom Aspinall in round 1 +150

I've been high on Aspinall for years now. I like the win via submission prop as taking him on the ML is not wise at that price. After the way Gane got dominated via wrestling by Jon Jones, you would have to think Aspinall will try and get him to the mat and that opens up the submission. As good as Aspinall is striking, that is Gane's strongsuit and I would not mess around and possibly get clipped. I like Gane too but hoping Tom finishes him and has a long title reign.

Totally agree — Aspinall’s best path is on the ground. Gane’s striking is elite, but that wrestling hole was exposed bad by Jones. If Tom mixes it up early and gets top control, the sub is definitely live. Great value on that prop.

I honestly think Aspinall would probably KO Gane as he has such a speed advantage over other big men, but why risk it? Gane clearly has a disadvantage on the ground so take it there if you can. Another thing is that Gane is also a freak of nature big man so his speed is up there too. Many do not know that Aspinall started jui jitsu first as a child with his father, so he is very good on the ground. He is such an elite striker, he has not showed 90% of his game yet as he hasn't had to and is finishing people in the 1st round most fights.

Anyways, long story short take Gane down and take the path of least resistance.

Exactly no need to stand and trade when you’ve got that kind of grappling edge. Aspinall’s ground game is super underrated, and like you said, we’ve barely seen his full skill set. If he takes Gane down early, it could be over quick.

What a shame how that ended, what a disaster.
