it's about the A's GM Billy Beane and how he put together a winning team on a low budget based off of sabermetrics.

The movie is based on the book by Michael Lewis.

It follows a year with the A's, but focuses on their GM, Billy Beane.

Beane under a sever salary limitation, decided to use statistics to find players that met certain criteria, and were affordable.

It was a great book, and the movie wasn't bad either.

read the book, Beane was actually supposedly to be a cant miss prospect as a player but was a bust so he ended up looking for different criteria to get his players.

The Mets thought Beane was a better prospect than Strawberry when they drafted them.

yeah it's such a scam that the Mets, Yankees, Blue Jays, Indians, Nats, DBacks, Cards, Reds and Padres have all hired sabermetrics analyst to their teams.

I agree the pitching was in place to start with. Sabermetrics can help a team spend more wisely but small market teams need a great run of players from their farm system to go along with some wise free agents moves.

                          This. ^

I saw the movie tonight and it's very entertaining and quite well done. I enjoyed it quite a lot. I also was a big baseball fan back then... So of course I knew the story.
Obviously, the point of the movie is just to entertain. When Beane wrote the book he took a TON of heat from the sports media.

The movie doesn't mention one of the best young rotations of this generation (or maybe any). They do show Hudson's back one time, though, while he's getting roughed up by the Royals.

Also, whilst playing around with the facts to paint a picture to make Beane look more a genius, they mentioned the Red Sox also employed sabermetrics and won 2 world series because of them. Yes, they hired Bill James (which if I remember correctly, they hired him AFTER hiring Theo Epstein), but to be fair, their payroll was in the top 3 in the league at that time and they've been in the top 5 payrolls pretty much every year since.

So, while that A's team was very exciting, they didn't really win anything and baseball wasn't exactly changed like the movie takes license with. If you want facts, this movie could tick you off. It's a fun story from an exciting team, but it doesn't tell the REAL story of why that team won.

All you had to do to win back then was have some good pitching and pump steroids into some unknowns for a bargain price...

Tejada could barely hit .235 when he came up...

Remember Geronimo Berroa??? I do..Guy was a beast at the plate thanks to roids...

You really think Scott Hatteburg was clean???

                              Get real...

Had nothing to do with Sabermetrics

Had everything to do with 3 good starters and Steroids...

Of course it would be "smart" to take more pitches and draw walks if everyone was on steroids and you could hit a 1-2 pitch the other way for a HR...

                              This ship has sailed...

Now there is a guy who could of had an incredible career. Had some big years with the Mets and a short resurgence with the NYY but never again experienced the major success he had in the mid 80's. Drugs ruined his career. What could have been! Dwight Gooden as well.

The movie was pretty good. It portrayed Billy Beane as a guy who lamented the fact that he passed a chance to go to Stanford University just so he could play baseball. But he just didn't pan out as the star they thought he'd be. So as a result, he told all his scouts to go screw themselves and decided to employ Sabermetrics with Jonah Hill to get ahead. Also showed a human side of Billy Beane and his relationship with his daughter which counteracted his robotic statistic driven ways of his professional life.
