My Canada vs. Ecuador prediction for Thursday's friendly at BMO Field in Toronto (7:30 p.m. ET) expects goals to be at a premium in frigid conditions.

Canada is the marginal +155 betting favorite, while Ecuador was irrefutably CONMEBOL's best defensive team during World Cup qualification. I've also featured a pick for Jonathan David, one of the most likely players to get on the scoresheet.

⚽ Canada vs. Ecuador preview & score prediction

Ecuador was the most impressive team in CONMEBOL during World Cup qualifiers, finishing second behind Argentina. Manager Sebastian Andres Beccacece oversees the stingiest defense in South America, if not the world.

They only allowed five goals in 18 World Cup qualifiers, never conceding more than once. Their last seven matches had two goals or fewer, with four of them ending in a goalless draw.

Canada manager Jesse Marsch has that challenging puzzle to solve, which won't be easy considering his team's recent lack of offensive bite.

🥶 Canada to use cold weather as advantage

Canada scored more than one goal just twice in its previous seven matches. In addition, the almost freezing conditions at BMO Stadium aren't conducive to a high-scoring affair, especially when it comes to the Ecuadorians.

Playing in frigid conditions isn't exactly their forte. In fact, it will probably make the collective feel about as comfortable as a sheepdog in the sizzling heat of Australia.

That's where Canada has the advantage.

However, Ecuador has been so good defensively that I'm unconfident in Les Rouges' ability to penetrate, which is why I'm going with a 0-0 stalemate. If there is a goal, I expect Canada to edge the match 1-0. That said, the Under - despite its short -168 odds - is the best bet.

A winning $10 bet will profit $5.95 on a winning $10 bet.

Score prediction: Canada 0, Ecuador 0

🆚 Canada vs. Ecuador matchup to watch

Jonathan David vs. Ecuador's defense

David is Canada's all-time goal-scoring leader, bagging 36 goals in 67 appearances. He represents Canada's best chance to score against a near impregnable defense. He last scored for his nation in September when Canada beat Romania 3-0 in a friendly.

FanDuel's +180 odds carry an implied probability of 35.71%, where a winning $10 bet will profit $18.

Best prop bet: Jonathan David anytime goal (+180 via FanDuel)
