The Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings are two rebuilding teams in the Atlantic Division. Can Detroit defend home ice Wednesday night against Buffalo?

The Sabres have been a streaky team this season and they’re not playing too well as of late. They lost each of their last two games, including blowing a 5-3 third-period lead against the Tampa Bay Lightning Monday. Buffalo is 2-9-1 in its last 12 matchups after starting off 7-3-0.

The Red Wings are barely above the .500 mark on the season at 11-6-4 largely thanks to a 7-3-2 home ice record. The Toronto Maple Leafs ended the Wings’ four-game win streak on Monday, but Detroit has a good chance to get back on track at home tonight.

Here are my NHL picks and predictions for Wednesday’s Sabres vs. Red Wings matchup (odds via DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Sabres vs. Red Wings Odds

Sabres vs. Red Wings Odds Analysis

The Red Wings opened at -146 and are now between -135 (DraftKings) and -139 (Unibet). The Sabres are down to +115 (DraftKings) after opening at +132.

The total opened at 6.5 and remains there with the books favoring the Over 6.5 (-125 at DraftKings).

Sabres vs. Red Wings Picks

  • Moneyline: Red Wings (-135 via DraftKings) ★★★★
  • Total: Over 6.5 (-125 via DraftKings) ★★★
  • Prop: Tage Thompson to score (+140 via FanDuel) ★★★

Sabres vs. Red Wings Moneyline Pick

Red Wings (-135) ★★★★

The Red Wings have been the better team so far this season, have home-ice advantage, and are playing improved as of late. Getting them at -135 seems like a great price all things considered.

Detroit is 7-3-2 at home this year with four of those five losses coming against pretty good teams: the L.A. Kings, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and the Maple Leafs. The fifth was against the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout -- what are you going to do?

Buffalo exploded for 13 goals in back-to-back wins last week but has struggled since. The Sabres have been very hit or miss this season and most of those misses came both recently and on the road. That’s a recipe for a Red Wings win tonight.

Sabres vs. Red Wings O/U Pick

Over 6.5 (-125) ★★★

This one could go either way. I’m leaning to the Over here given Buffalo’s recent defensive struggles. The Sabres allowed 51 goals in their last 12 games -- more than four per contest. They’ve also scored 38, however, an average of plus three per game.

The Red Wings have shown they can score goals with 22 in their last five matchups while allowing 12.

Both teams should get pucks in the net and it could be another open game like the last meeting, which had a whopping 11 goals. It’ll help that the Wings start backup goalie Alex Nedeljkovic (2-3-1, 4.01 GAA, .880 SV%) as well.

Sabres vs. Red Wings Prop Pick

Thompson to score (+140) ★★★

If there are going to be goals in the game, you can bet Tage Thompson will be involved. The Sabres center is enjoying quite the breakout season with 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in 22 games.

Thompson had a six-point game with a hat trick the last time these teams met. I’ll happily take +140 for him to find the back of the net tonight.
