The Red Wings are desperately trying to hang in the playoff conversation, but can they hang with a Sabres squad vying for the top seed in the conference?

A road tilt with the Buffalo Sabres isn't going to make life easy for a reeling Detroit Red Wings squad that's fighting for its playoff life. Puck drop from KeyBank Center in Buffalo, N.Y., is set for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). The Sabres are a -155 moneyline betting favorite.

My Red Wings vs. Sabres prediction breaks down what could be a first-round playoff preview, but what looks more like it will be another hit to Detroit's playoff hopes.

💰 Red Wings vs. Sabres prediction & best bet

Sabres -1.5 (+165)

It almost came out of nowhere, but the Sabres are suddenly one of the league's best. Since Dec. 9, Buffalo has been on a 33-6-4 run, and that's because all four lines have been contributing and the squad has been holding onto late leads.

Detroit has struggled to score just 2.64 goals per game this month, as its power play has been floundering. That's a tough spot in a matchup with one of the league's best penalty kills.

This is anchored in the offensive mismatch, and I'm going to seek the value here vs. Buffalo's moneyline.

Score prediction: Buffalo 4, Detroit 1

🔥 Best Red Wings vs. Sabres player prop bet

Tage Thompson anytime goal scorer (+165)

Thompson is one of the league's most prolific scorers this season, and tonight is a juicy matchup for him. Buffalo's top power-play unit isn't elite, but Detroit's penalty kill is abysmal (24th, 77.8%), and Thompson is the trigger-man who will be able to take advantage. Thompson is in the 99th percentile for shots per game, placing him in elite company. That type of volume still pumping out at this point in the season is something to target, as it's a sustained effort to put pucks on net.

With Cam Talbot set to miss tonight between the pipes for the Red Wings, they'll have to turn to John Gibson. Gibson has been incredibly average, with a 57th save percentage against high-danger changes (.823). Thompson should get his chances, and I'm happy with this down to +140.

📊 Live Red Wings vs. Sabres odds

This line opened at Red Wings +125 / Buffalo -150, then moved to Red Wings +135 / Buffalo -160 later this morning. It's since pulled back a bit from that point, which is a pretty solid indication this afternoon that the line is likely to hang out between the two as we near game time.

The total opened at 6 is is likely to hang right there - there's been almost no movement in either direct, and the little moves that have happened have pulled back quickly.

🚀 Red Wings vs. Sabres same-game parlay

We're going to place our SGP at bet365, one of our best sports betting sites, and we're going to pad our individual bets a little to give us some wiggle room. While I see plenty of value in the above-listed plays, you can make things a little smoother with the Sabres moneyline and the under 6.5 instead of the spread and the flat 6, and still hit a solid price.

If you want to go full wild on the spread and Under 6 with Thompson, that gets all the way up to +1250. Don't go more than 0.1u there.

💵 Red Wings vs. Sabres SGP picks

  • Sabres moneyline (-150)
  • Under 6.5 (-140)
  • Tage Thompson anytime goal scorer (+150)

💡 How I'm betting Red Wings vs. Sabres

Follow all of our NHL analysis and expert predictions this season.

Like any regular-season NHL game, there's no reason to get carried away. Unfortunately, the moneyline Buffalo moneyline odds (-150) are a bit steep for my liking, and the total sits at a flat 6, giving us a higher likelihood of a push. I'm just going to dedicate two units to this game as I chase the better value of the spread, but also respect that it's just inherently harder to hit.
