We're nearly perfectly split down the middle with seven of our 13 experts picking the Seahawks to cover the spread - including yours truly - with our other six NFL experts taking the points with the underdog Patriots to stay within 4.5 points on Sunday.
That would follow a trend of Super Bowl underdogs covering the spread five straight years with a 4-1 record outright in that stretch. Still, the Seahawks earn the nod from our experts thanks to a historic defense and surging offense that has us favoring Seattle.
π’ Why the Seahawks will cover as Super Bowl favorites
"I've gone back and forth on this all week, but I can't shake the fact that the Seahawks hold a massive advantage when the Patriots have the ball, and their offense features the best player on either team in Jaxon-Smith Njigba. This one has blowout potential and I don't want to be stuck on the wrong side of that bet." - C Jackson Cowart
"Seattle will cover. They were the best team in football against the spread at 14-5 this season, and if they cover in the Super Bowl, it would be the best mark in franchise history. They dominate all three phases of the game." - Dustin Saracini
"I'm taking the Seahawks to cover the 4.5-point spread. They're the better team in every phase and their game-wrecking defense will make life particularly chaotic for a sophomore quarterback who will finally prove he is indeed human." - Gary Pearson
"Seattle has exceeded expectations all year and will cover -4.5 vs. the Patriots. The Seahawks are a league-best 14-5 against the spread, including covering in four straight amid their toughest competition of the season." - Liam Fox
"I am backing the Seahawks to cover -4.5. They have been the best ATS team in the NFL this season, covering 14 of 19 games. They hold a massive advantage on the defensive side of the ball, which should help them cover the -4.5 line." - LJ Blut
"The Seahawks should be favored by more than 4.5 points, so I'll happily take Seattle to cover. The Hawks are 14-5 ATS this season and covered in both their playoffs games, including against a Rams team ranked No. 2 in FPI. The Patriots are ranked No. 10 in FPI and have played three teams in the playoffs dealing with massive injuries." - Rob Paul
"The Seahawks cover -4.5 during a defensive struggle between two of the league's top-five scoring defenses. Seattle boasts more firepower to capitalize on the few opportunities the Seahawks get during crucial moments." - Sean Tomlinson
π΄ Why the Patriots will cover as Super Bowl underdogs
"I'm on the Pats and the points (4.5). Super Bowl lines are the tighest of any sport at anytime during the sports calendar, so don't expect to find an edge. But it sure feels like NE is being slightly undervalued with this line." - James Bisson
"I'll take the Patriots and the points (+4.5) at a number that is simply too large after New England got past the sturdy defenses of the Texans and Broncos en route to the Super Bowl." - Esten McLaren
"I'm taking the underdog Patriots to win outright, so I'm absolutely fine with someone wanting to back New England to cover +4.5 rather than back it on the moneyline. Actually, no, don't be a coward. Hit that +195 moneyline baby." - Andrew Brennan
"New England will cover. Seattle's defense is good, but it's boosted from playing a slate loaded with backups, fringe starters, and injury decimated teams - it's not going to offer anything the Patriots haven't already had to overcome in the postseason. Sam Darnold doesn't have what it takes, and we'll see that Sunday." - Andrew Reid
"The Patriots will cover as a 4.5-point underdog. Youβre getting the better quarterback, a former Coach of the Year who won three Super Bowls as a player, and more than a field goal on a neutral field." - Corey Scott
"I typically only bet a Super Bowl underdog on the spread if I think they can win the game outright, which I do here with the Pats at +4.5. The New England D should be able to shut down the Seattle run game, and limit JSN." - Matt Burke
