📝 How to fill out an NFL playoff bracket: Tips, strategy, advice

Filling out an NFL playoff bracket is one of the most fun ways to keep up with the action, but it can be confusing to understand how it works if you haven't done it before.

With seven teams making the postseason from each conference, one team receives a first-round bye while the other six play in the wild-card round. The No. 1 seed will then face the worst-seeded team among the three winners from the first round with the other two teams facing off accordingly. For example, if the No. 7 seed wins in the first round, it will automatically face the No. 1 seed; similarly, the No. 2 seed will always face the No. 3, No. 4, or No. 5 seed based on which is the best remaining team after the opening round.

Unlike filling out a March Madness bracket or even a College Football Playoff bracket, upsets are fairly uncommon in the NFL playoffs - especially later in the postseason, when rest and home-field advantage play a significant role in which teams represent each conference in the Super Bowl. Consider that roughly half of all Super Bowl winners have been No. 1 seeds since seeding began in 1975, and that advantage has only grown since the second bye week was eliminated starting in 2020.

So when filling out your NFL playoff bracket, it'd be wise to consider at least one No. 1 seed in the Super Bowl with an upset or two in the early rounds. Elite coaches and quarterbacks tend to elevate their teams in the postseason, though as we've seen with the 2026 NFL playoffs, all it takes is getting hot at the right time to make history.
