Cowboys vs. Eagles Prediction, Odds & Expert Picks: NFL Season Opener Best Bets

Micah Parsons' exit isn't the only issue the Dallas Cowboys must overcome in their season opener against the defending Super Bowl champs, as Gary Pearson analyzes what the visitors are up against.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles get the 2025 season underway on Thursday when they host the Dallas Cowboys, and my Cowboys vs. Eagles prediction sheds more light on the numerous issues the visitors face in the NFL's season opener.

For these NFL picks, I added two player props, including an appealing bonus pick that features the Cowboys' primary offensive threat. Kickoff from Lincoln Financial Field is set for 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC), and the Eagles are the 8 or 8.5-point betting favorite as we make our NFL predictions for Week 1

🦅 Eagles -8  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This matchup, for the Dallas Cowboys, reminds me of a blind date featuring an impoverished, overweight middle-aged man and a 20s-something model. I expect things to go as well for the Cowboys as they would for the former in that hypothetical example.

The Cowboys were 2-6 ATS last season when Dak Prescott lined up under center. They didn't do much to improve an offensive line that ranked 23rd last season, via PFF.

While the Eagles had a couple of influential members of their defense depart, they should still have an elite defensive line, which PFF ranked as the second-best pressure unit last season.

Yes, wide receiver George Pickens will help Dallas' offense, but by how much?  Considering their lackluster running back room, not nearly enough.

Things are even worse defensively. With Micah Parsons' unceremonious exit, the Cowboys will lose at least 23% of their sack share, and that's being generous. He had 12 of Dallas' 52 sacks last season in just 13 games, and how many did he create by drawing double teams?

The Cowboys had the second-worst run defense last season, via PFF, while the Eagles have arguably the most impactful one-two punch. And then there's the Cowboys' secondary, which will be without rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. Trevon Diggs, who wasn't expected to feature until Week 4, said there's a 75-80% chance he'll play.

The Eagles won't lose any sleep if he does suit up, as there is no way he will be game fit after being out for so long. It's why I'm backing Philadelphia with my NFL picks against the spread.

The spread increased to -8.5 at three of the best sports betting sites and -8 at bet365 and Caesars. Both of the latter offer standard -110 juice, which I'm pleased as punch about.

⬆️ Dallas Goedert Over 36.5 receiving yards (-110) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert got healthy at the right time last year, and he was a monster in the playoffs, amassing at least 47 receiving yards in all three games prior to the Super Bowl. He averaged 53.75 receiving yards per game in the postseason, and cashed the Over on this total in four of his final five games before lifting the Lombardi Trophy.

BetMGM offers the lowest total while offering the standard -110 juice. While DraftKings offers plus-money odds (+101), I'm not as confident in its elevated 39.5-yard total. Caesars has a higher total than BeMGM (38.5) and offers worse value (-115).

A winning $10 bet at BetMGM will yield a $9.09 profit.

⬆️ CeeDee Lamb Over 71.5 receiving yards (-114) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pickens should make it slightly more challenging for defenses to double up on CeeDee Lamb, who should be in for a highly productive season.

With the Cowboys expected to air it out more often and the question marks in the Eagles secondary, I like Lamb to cash this Over. In addition, the game script should be conducive for Lamb to amass a bunch of yards when the Cowboys are chasing in the latter stages. A winning $10 bet at FanDuel would yield an $8.77 profit.

How do NFL odds work?

When betting on NFL odds, the point spread shows how many points the favorite needs to win by in order to cash the bet. For example, a favorite of -3 must win by more than 3 points to cover the spread, while an underdog at +3 must win outright or lose by fewer than 3 points to cover the spread.

Moneyline odds represent the payout for picking the outright winner (+200 means a $100 bet wins $200, while -200 means a $200 bet wins $100). Over/Unders let you wager on whether the combined total will be higher or lower than the set number.
