Platform Deadline Notes

🏃 Why you shouldn't wait until the last minute

Don't wait until the last minute. Bracket platforms - ESPN in particular - experience massive server strain in the hours leading up to the first tipoff, with millions of entries flooding in simultaneously as the deadline approaches.

Slow load times, error messages, and outright crashes are a real risk when you're cutting it close, and a failed submission means your bracket doesn't count - full stop.

Get your March Madness bracket predictions in now, and save yourself the stress of watching the clock tick toward 12:15 p.m. ET while a loading screen spins. SBR recommends submitting at least one hour before the deadline, and ideally before you sit down for your morning coffee.

❌ What happens if you miss the bracket deadline?

Miss the deadline and your bracket is gone - there are no exceptions, no extensions, and no appeals. The moment TCU and Ohio State tip off at 12:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 19, every bracket platform locks permanently. Picks cannot be edited, swapped, or submitted after that point, no matter what happens.

If you do miss the window, your best option is the ESPN Second Chance Bracket - a separate contest that opens after the first weekend of the tournament, once the field has been trimmed from 64 to 16 teams. Rather than picking from the full bracket, Second Chance participants fill out their picks from the Sweet 16 onward, giving latecomers a fresh shot at glory with the Cinderella teams already sorted out.

ESPN typically opens Second Chance entries on Sunday, March 22, following the conclusion of the Round of 32 - check ESPN's bracket page for exact timing as the first weekend wraps up.

The bottom line: submit your bracket now. The Second Chance is a consolation prize, not a substitute.
